I have been finishing a Keil Kraft Phantom Mite which lay half built for a few years before i came back to it to finish.  I have a couple of questions now just as i am finishing it off.  Is a wing tip weight necessary on this model and if so what kind of weight would be suitable? The other question is what kind of control line should i be using? could i get away with using fishing line? thanks for the help

Status: offline 		I never used tip weights in my mites and had no problems with them.
I used terylene lines with my mites but steel on the Phantoms.

Status: offline 		Thats great thanks! Is there a certain grade of terylene i should get? also where do you source it from? here are some photos of how i have been getting on. the engine and canopy are just sitting in place at the moment! thanks

That's nice work. Is that a PAW 1cc up front?

It would be of help to you to fly with other control line fliers in your area. Where in UK are you?

If you haven't already found the Barton Forum, let me recommend it to you. http://www.controlline.org.uk/phpBB2/index.php

Personally I wouldn't use and fabric lines, instead I'd look for some .008" Brodaks do them, you may also find something suitable in fishing tackle shops.

Status: offline 		Let's start out that I am in the USA so may not have a full answer for someone in the UK. That said fishing line that is identified as "fusion" works well for smaller control line models and there even was a push this last rules cycle for using them in CL combat here in the states(it did not pass). Remember that any knot reduces the breaking strength at the point of the knot by as much as 50%. Look up knots for fishing on the web for best results. Here in the states there are craft stores that sell beading supplies including .008 and .012 stainless wire in suitable lengths.

Status: offline 		It is the PAW 0.8cc but i believe its exactly the same engine just with a smaller bore.  I found some fishing line with a quoted breaking strain of 35lbs i thought this would hopefully do the job?  I live in N. Ireland so i am not sure how big a support of control line flying there is here. Cheers

Status: offline 		At 35 pounds the problem isnt strength. Most fishing line is a nylon product that gives very poor control. You need something that does not streach when pulled on.

Status: offline 		The Terylene I use is from my local model shop and used to come with the Cox and WenMac rtf models.

PS Ive just scaled the plans for the Phantom from an A4 page and am cutting the wood for it. It will give my AP06 somewhere to live.

Status: offline 		There was quite a bit of interest here in Phantoms and Mites a few years back, 2005 I think. I'm glad to say I may have been responsible, having build both types back then.
If you do a Forum search the old threads should come up.
Re the tip weight, my Mite did need a small washer glued under the wing tip ( see photo ). I flew it on 35' Laystrate, not much line pull with my model so lighter lines should be O.K.
I've a attached some pics. of my Mite, which, still gets flown sometimes, although it did become a bit of a Hangar Queen when diesel fuel became very hard ( impossible ) to find here in Australia. I mix my own these days, problem solved........John
