flying lawnmower
I just finished scratch-building a flying lawnmower and don't have the slightest idea of where to check for CG! If you have a flying lawnmower, send some pics-I'd enjoy seeing how others made theirs! Thanks.

Flying Lawnmower?
You guys doing those low inverted heli passes again?
It's a plane that LOOKS like a lawnmower.
BTW, there is a thread in the "Beginners" forum that has a few guys that have built these from the RCM plans you may want to ask.
Let us know how it flies!!!

flying lawn mower
The act of flying a lawn mower is well rehearsed by some of the guys at the Santa Clara County Model Airplane Skypark. Their act is hilarious...during the middle of their airshows some dope ends up mowing the lawn on the flying side of the runway. The MC acts a little befuddled, the lawn mowing idiot starts coming across the runway and the dang lawn mower takes off and away from him.
The far side of the runway seems to then get mowed with a series of low passes...and the crowds go wild.
You might contact them at

...no, that's not all they do...the flying snoopy doghouse being chased by the giant-scale sopwith pup is also hilarious.

flying lawnmower
Start out at 25% of the length of your lawnmower. A friend and I have built some flying novelties, including lawnmowers, carpets flags, batplane, picnic blanket, etc... All were made from 1" thick white foam, balsa bracing, and covered with monokote. I have attached a pic of my Flying Flag with Uncle Sam aboard.

I haven't seen it fly, but I'm posting a picture of one I stole from Hobbypark's website in Winston-Salem, NC. Somebody there might be able to help. Here's their site:

Here is a video of my flying lawnmower in action. It is a crowd pleaser and is used at fly-ins.

Guys,
I have build and flew 2 of these things. Even flew in a formation flight once.
On the Greeen and Black one in the picture I balance ind at the leading edge of the Black motor.
Mind is a RCM designed by Don Orgren and used his foam kit.
Good Luck,
Jim

RE: flying lawnmower
My friend who is pilot for a known airline has built this and did things with that had my eyes popping out. He also has done Snoopy's dog house and the Porsche which is a handful. I told him that if I ever got on an MD-80 and he was flying it I would get off because I would be afraid that he would try a barrel roll or something, man I love giving him a hard time as we once compared notes and found out that he was assigned to my unit as a slick driver and probably flew me all over the country. He really is a damn good pilot!

Having seen one of these at a Fly-in, I too am truely amazed by their flying ability. The one I saw had a 90 FS and could do some amazing stunts, as well as the typical manuevers. It was a very impressive flyer--especially considering the 30mph wind conditions.

Tennessee Model Products Zimpro kit. OS 61 SF, APC 12x8, Jerry Smith Power Pipe. Will go vertical on Take Off. Balance is at 25%. (9.5" back from leading edge) Fly's better than it ever should.

RE: flying lawnmower
The tank is awesome! It even looks better than when you told me about it earlier.
Have you flown it yet at any stage of development? I'm afraid I would get disoriented if I let it get too far out... ( which there is no reason for ).
