Status: offline 		I received an O.S. 25AX today.

It looks essentially identical to the 25FX other than the new carb with the angled needle valve.

One of the first things I checked was to see if the backplate mounting pattern was the same and indeed existing mounts will fit just fine.

I have some work I have to do this afternoon and some orders that have to be shipped by 5pm, but I will get it on the test stand later on. I will have to violate my self-imposed test stand hours because I know that people are really interested in the performance of thhis engine.

Is there any talk of allowing this engine in Q25 in the Carolina's? I'm planning to come down to fly 424 for the Oct race at Julian & figured as long as I'm driving that far may as well fly Q25 also. We don't fly that class in NY, I don't mind buying an OS 25 but if I had a choice I would prefer the AX for the carb setup alone.

Not yet. I had a eye doctor appointment this afternoon and I just got back. I have some work to do. I'm going to try to run it if I can this evening.

I want to get numbers ASAP so we know what the comparison is. I'm sure O.S. is not going to keep two .25 engines in the line-up and this looks like a simple update, not a major revision.

Status: offline 		Here it is running on the test stand.

I'm running it with my 7.8x6 carbon fiber break-in prop because I trust it not to come apart and as you can see, these are close up photos. No zoom.

After a tank, the best it would do was 15,850. So it is not a 25FX killer. It is quieter than the 25FX and I think the muffler is probably a little more restrictive. I did not open it up.

I'm taking a family dinner break. Will put an APC 8x6 on it after another tank and see what it does.

Status: offline 		I ran a couple more tanks through it. One with the APC 8x6.

I peaked it a couple of times. The best I saw was 15,790 with 15,750 being the average best.

It is a smooth running engine.

Bud,

I paid $140 for it, which is at least $40 more than the 25FX was. But it is O.S. quality. I think the price will come down because I don't think the market will bear a $140 price tag.

There hasn't been much discussion about it. But I can tell you that I know that a number of people have not committed to Quickie 25 because of the pending release of this engine. They didn't want to buy obsolete engines.

After my testing today, I am probably going to allow the 25AX at the Summer Pylon Series at Lowe's Motor Speedway ( www.LowesRC.com ) ... We have 4 races coming up over 7 weeks. And if I can boost attendance by allowing the engine, I will. It does not appear to have any advantage over the 25FX at all. In fact, I think the 25FX probably is stronger and faster than the 25AX. Quickie 25 is about fun entry level racing. One fat turn is more of a difference than either engine would seem to have at this point.

I was going to make my races SPRA compliant races, but I have talked to a number of guys who are planning to race Club 40 and they were not happy that I was going to change from the published www.Club40Racing.com rules that have been posted for over 6 months. Before anybody jumps on me in this thread, take a breather and wait until I post a thread later tonight about the Summer Pylon Series.

Status: offline 		When the 46AX came out, after running some tachs, we thought the FX would be equal or better, but once you loaded up the AX with a heavier prop, it pulled harder through the turns and is a significantly faster overall motor.

You may want to test the motor in the air using a stopwatch and radar with a variety of props before making that assumption.

Status: offline 		yes i do agree with Daven, i have the OS 46 AX and a couple of guys have the FX series , the AX does seem to have more grunt than the FX . if i owned this 46 FX i would do some measurements of timings etc but i am sure its not just the carby etc change over from the FX to the AX, there must be some internal timing changes somewhere.

Status: offline 		I did end buying an FX yesterday & will convert my oldest Seeker for Q-25, I want to get some time on the engine and can't wait and see if the AX will be approved. Besides, the $40 price difference did factor into it when I considered I'll need the engine for 1 race only and it may not get used much in the future.

Status: offline 		Yesterday I noticed that the OS 25FX was showing limited quantities on Tower Hobbies. I inquired and was told it was being discontinued.

This is going to make the decision to allow the O.S. 25AX in Quickie 25 very easy as it is the only viable replacement.

I am going to put mine on my Screamer and fly it at the next Lowe's race. If we have enough people left to run Quickie 25. So many planes were crashed, we may not have many entries. At the minimum we can get heat times with it.

Is there any reason why the GMS can't be used in Quickie 25?

Supply problems.

GMS engines are only sporadically available. Tower / Hobbico often goes months without them. And I think they are the only distributor. I have followed GMS for a long time and have seen them sometimes go 3 or more months without being available. Once they went 5 months. Plus the mufflers fall apart.

I don't think the lower quality and supply problems are worth the trouble.

Quickie 25 has done well with the OS 25FX as the only engine, just like 424 has done well with just the TT Pro 40. Many guys like the single engine concept. While we are not doing it in Club 40, it works for Quickies.

O.S. is a reliable supplier and the engines are consistent. I believe the price will come down some. Even if it doesn't, I think the quality justifies the price.

Status: offline 		In Club 40 where 40 size engine choice was up to the racer several guys ran GMS they were very competitive, but supply was very poor you would have to wait for months at a time to find engines in stock.

I agree with Don that an increase in cost to $140.00 per engine, and the reduction in performance they just shot themselves in the foot on sales.

They are learning the ways of american automotive business...... don't give them what they want, give them what you think they need!!!!

Status: offline 		Well, Barry to be fair Bill did answer my questions. They are just the US distributor of OS and have no ties to the factory. He says they don't even know of any new products until OS is ready to release them. Sounds like OS has been watch too much US TV reality shows!!

I've done a bit of research and I’ve been reviewing the GMS .25 ABC BB engine from Tower Hobbies. The spec look good and Bill gave me the run down on any issues seen at the warranty/complaint department. Seems the availability issue has been taken care of late last year. Check out :

At $59.99 not a bad price for the engine. Thanks to a certain person I’ve got one coming to do some testing and document the break-in procedure and performance compared to one of my OS .25FX. Status: offline 		Well I'm sure there wil be plenty of .25 FXs around for a while seeing how they came on the market in 1995 I believe. Just want to keep the Quickie 25 racing going as it a great stepping stone into 424 and 428. Having a good source for engines at a reasonable price is a plus for any racing!!
