Last night was GREAT !! No wind at all. Flew the typhoon four flights. NO crashes!! I'm finally getting starting to be more relaxed about flying. Had a GREAT time. Lots of other flyers were there as well. I bought an onyx 230 battery charger. Juost starting using it today. I have a question about it. the manual says that TX batteries should not be charged at greater than 1.5 A, but the chart shows 3.0 for quick charge (1500 NiMh 9.6 volt). Is it safe to quick charge my Tx battery at 3.0? Slow charge of course is 1.5

Scince its a Nimh as opposed to a lipo,You might get away with it a few times if you needed it quick in a pinch, but I personally wouldn't do it. It will get hot when you fast charge it like that and its life and performance will be degraded. You're pack will last longer and its much safer to charge at 1C or less (1.5 amps for a 1500mah pack)

You should be able to fly nearly all day on that battery. I would never exceed the 1.5 A charge rate. I would also very seldom use it at that rate. You could fly say 3 flights, and set the charge at .4 A and relax for 30 min to 1 hr. No matter what, you would have enough power to fly again immediately. I got 8 flights out of an 1100 mah nicad on my Alpha trainer, with no recharges in between, but that is the max I have done / will do, as it took 850 ma back in the charge. That's a little close for me. Your batteries will last much longer if you charge them at a lower rate than 1C.

It's great having one of those days when you can fly all day without being blown away by the wind or rained on. Last week sat was good for us, although a little windy at times.

Good luck!

Hey Bill.

Yeah, slow steady charge, overnight using whatever charger you wish, is always better. The wall wart charger would pretty much do it for a "long soak" of over 12 hours or so.

Of course, it all depends on how much you actually take out of the battery during your sessions. The way to tell that would be by using a charger that has cycle capability so you can discharge it then re-charge it. The discharge will tell you what's left and the charge will put it at peak. All this can be done during the week, for instance, when you are not flying. That way you can take advantage of those "long soak" periods and let it go to max.

Then, if you have the time, meaning that if you are not going flying that very next day.. you can run it through the cycle to really see how much a full charge represents for that particular battery. Then, charge it again and fly with it.

After you fly, do a discharge cycle again, do the math, see how much it used during your flying sessions. This will all give you a good idea of what to expect out of that battery and maybe better gauge your flying time accordingly.

The Multiplex charger will tell you how much it put into the battery to charge it. This is displayed in the upper right corner. Very handy..

Although slow and steady is better, I've yet to have the bad experiences I'm told I'd have quick charging my 2300 mAh NiMH batteries at 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 when in a hurry. And people quick charge EVERY DAY at the field when their batteries fall under safe voltages, without batting an eye! After a full season, my inexpensive all-battery.com Tenergy batteries still hold their charge for a full day of flying. Again, slow and steady is better though and I slow charge overnight when I can.

I usually just plug my TX into the wall wart and let it cook overnight. The receiver battery packs, well, often, they are not easily accessible so I use the Triton or the ICE charger on them and set them for a charge rate of 1C and let them go at that. That usually takes an hour and I'm done with it.

LiPo's, though, are a totally different story. Those get charged with the ICE at a specific rate AND outdoors away from everything, and in a LiPo sack.

2300mah pack being charged at 2 amps is still less than 1C .
