I've seen "Blacken It" recommended for use on metal tracks, but decided to give it a try on the other metal bits I just got for my Tiger. I think it worked great, and is alot easier to do than trying to paint an already metal part attempting to make it look like metal. Duh! After painting the wood handles I wiped down the remaining metal parts with a little 3 in 1 oil to bring out the metal appearance a bit more, but the dry metal/rusty appearance looked good too. I don't believe that I've seen anyone post this before and thought I'd pass it along. I used the gun blueing solution on my other Tigers tracks and MG42 but found that it didn't adhere to some portions of the tracks.

I found the Blacken It at a local hobby shop with the RR train stuff.

Looks great and thanks for the tip. You might want to also use gun blueing products. Works great and will not come off.

Looks good. Did you paint on the wood parts before or after using the Blacken-It?

Thanks for the comments.

Clear blue liquid, comes in a 4oz bottle. Painted after dipping & drying. Quick acting, only takes 60-90 seconds.

Don't foget the wood grain on the tools!

A neat little trick here is to use enamals for a base coat. Now timing is everything for the next step. Just before the paint is dry....just a bit tacky: use your #11 blade and make some fine lines where you want the grain.

Next let it dry hard. Now use a darker shade of acryl and fill in some of the lines you made with the blade. Next change to a lighter shade. Continue till you are a happy camper. Works great on the jack block also.

Enjoy!

Thanks Don! I'll give them another coat of the dark brown and give it a try. I dry brushed a bit with a dark tan to try to give it a grain-like appearance but I'm not real happy with how it turned out.
