Hey All

Going a little crazy here. Have a 23cc that I just put a new carb on (old carb had problems starting, tunning, running, flooding, but would usually start after sitting for a couple of days, but if it didn't start on the first couple pulls, it wouldn't) Can't find any airleaks, plug has spark, compression okay. With the plug out, I can see a fine mist of gas coming in the cylinder, so gas getting in. But I noticed that with the air filter off, after 5-6 pulls I have fuel dripping out the front of the carb (one or two small drops) Is this normal, or is the engine flooding? If I let the engine sit for a couple of days, then try to start, I'll get one or two detinations in the cylinder, then nothing, not even a hint of starting. I've also tried the needles at stock and degrees of a half turn either way with no luck.

have you tried to gap the coil again? Sounds like weak spark to me

Hey my friend..if you have gas coming out the carb..the diaphram is no good in the carb...even tho new carb...
if you have spark..change out the spark plug..your old one may be wet and no good...pull the plug out ..turn up
side down ..pull the pull starter a few times to get it un flooded..turn car back over..leave plug out ..lrt air dry
for about 30 minutes..the put new plug in and set choke ..pull over a couple times..un set choke..pull it over to start.
you may have to open your throttle a little more,,,,,,,Slawhammer

Is that the space on the sparkplug? If so, yup, tried two other sparkplugs too. How do you tell if it's a weak spark? (hold to tongue? lol) I tested for the spark in the dark and could see it easily, but I have no idea if it's a strong spark.
Hey Slawhammer! Ya tried all that (also used my air compressor, all dry inside) Is it possible for the timing on these to be off? I think the only thing I havn't looked at is the ingnition coil.... doh! Is that what you mean by gap the coil (lol) I'll check that next. How much of a gap?

i can guarantee you either did one of two of these things ..

1/ did you put fuel lines on correct? the feed [line with fuel filter attached] this must go to bottom of carb

2/ the return goes on top of carb

without this done correctly it wont start.

did you try this?

with the air filter off, after 5-10 pulls, one, maybe two drops drip off the front of the air intake.

Ok ...after thinking about this with your carb...Take the carb off the engine....You may have internal blockage...
turn the carb up side down..remove the 4 screws..check the screen for being clogged with junk from the fuel tank...
same for the needles..junk could clog the internal jets....you should spray it with some cleaner to flush it out...
Maybe the klunker filter in the fuel tank is no good any more.....As a habit I replace my klunker & fuel lines about 3 times a year
just not any fuel problems..........Slawhammer

It's looking like I might have a cyclinder prob. I checked the compression against a couple other motors and it's a little weak. Going to strip the engine off my XRC buggy this weekend and put that on. The XRC rc2 was a POS, but from what I remember the engine ran strong and hard with the stock muffler, should be good with the ddm. Getting the motor in might be a bit of a challange though. The XRC motor's sparkplug is mounted at about a 45 degree angle (larger sparkplug too) Other than when I ran this in the XRC a couple of years ago, I know nothing about the motor. I think it was a 23cc, but I've never seen others with a larger sparkplug and not top mounted. Now if I can find a flywheel puller....

Replace the intake gasket between the carb and intake manifold with a blue one. You probably have a black one and they can blow out causing the engine no to get enough fuel.

Ya, feel like I'm going a little crazy now. Swapped out the engine, no start. Swapped out carb 3 times (1 new, 2 used) Either missing something along the way, or have no luck at all (I'm thinking the latter) Baja goes back in the basement for a couple months, out come my FS and Bigfoot.

its is normal to see drops of fuel come out of the carb when starting , but if it leaks and starts dripping right out of there onto the black airfilter cone then the problem isnt the carb cos its showing you fuel is getting thru the carb , the problem is its not geting sucked into the engine , thats caused by a bad piston ring , when the ring is bad and you try to start it , it will force fuel outwards into the airfilter instead of sucking it into the intake . what you should do now is replace the ring , replace the head gasket with copper 020 and replace all carb gaskets and exhaust gaskets , and get a suitable gasket sealant that resists petrol and smear a thin coating on all gaskets both sides when putting it all back together . Now if you got a new carb and havnt messed with the needle settings you should be right to start it and might need only a few adjustments , if it still doesnt start after all that check that the spark plug boot wire coil spring is gripping into the wire cable solid making contact with most of the copper strands , it might have come loose , so just take off the plug boot untill you see the copper spring coil and take that off and then with a pair of pliers re insert it into and pierce it into a new location , it has to start then . if not put a brand new plug in ,if the spark is light golden then the plug is crapped out , it should be blue

mbe301;you say that you have tried 3 diferent carbs with no luck, have you checked that the pulseport to the carb is not clogged with dirt or similar?Or that the gasket is clogged or the mounted the wrong way so it is clogging the pulseport?

sorry for late reply, was away.

Checking the spark plug spark outside the engine is one thing, whats happening inside is another. For the coil take it off and have it checked at a local small engines shop(lawn mower repair shop) that should cost nothing if the shop is any good.

To gap the coil, most just use a cigert carton. Or you could find a feeler gauge set with a copper feeler gauge, both get you within the ball park.

Only thing I haven't done is take the cyclinders off (either engine) Checked the gaskets, rebuild one carb with a kit, tried it again, no luck. I'll come back to this once I have more time. My FS and firehammer are running so I'll run those when I can. (Single parent with two young kids and a small business to run takes most of my free time)

best I can think of is there is rather not enough compression or the spark is very weak. Sounds like there is fuel going through, just no fire!

The timming can go off, but that would mean that the flywheel key striped.
