... but shouldn't the oil-filled shocks on my Vortex actually be filled with oil?

No sign of leakage anywhere, but when I popped the tops off, the valve was barely covered with oil.... mostly air in there.

I topped them up with some Traxxas shock oil I "borrowed".... but what's the best weight shock oil for these shocks?

Im sorry but those stock shocks dont hold oil at all. Every stock shock ive ever had leaked oil, maybe one or two didnt but thats out of a pretty good amount of cars. They are either totally empty or have just a tiny bit. I would pick up the redcat big bore shocks, they are from the 1/8th ultralites but they work amazing and actually hold oil haha. And they have adjustable collars for preload, when they were on my nitro if i had them almost all the way up and loosened, it would sit just below fully extended, with the arms parallel to the ground. But i could also make them real stiff so it would be better for jumping and stuff. I recommend them. http://www.redcatracing.com/RC-Cars/60003

a shock with no oil is only half a shock. do they really leak oil that bad? dont they have seals? thats one of the things i like about my redcat shocks. they just dont leak at all, but they are for a diffrent line, so i cant comment on the smaller ones. i would think they wouldnt work so well with out oil. kinda like an old tamiya frog with friction springs. put oil in it. if it leaks, work on the seals.

i have had same problem with a himoto emxt-1, it was leaking after the first ever run; and pretty soon i notice oil coming right out from the bottom of the struts when i refill them, lol, i bought 2 pair of traxxas stampede rear struts and put them on there, they work great, no sign of leak at all! =D

The bigger cars dont leak oil, my 1/8th shocks are amazing, i actually might throw some of the 1/8th shocks on my 1/10th. But i think ive heard of someone putting new o-rings in and they work good, but i love those big bores, work amazing.

These shocks have never leaked, AFAIK... there was no sign of oil on the shock body or the shaft - they were bone dry. To me it appeared they just never got filled in the first place, or they just got a few drops of oil instead of being completely filled.

These aren't the "stock" plastic body shocks, these are the aluminum ones.... are folks finding they leak too? Or is it that the aluminum leaks more than the plastic?

Derek, aren't those 1/8 shocks a little long for a 1/10 truck?

when you buy a new redcat car or truck they do not fill the shocks with oil(from what i understand). you have to fill them after you get it. even when you buy the hop up shocks, they are shipped without oil in them.
as far as what weight oil to use...it all depends on how you drive it.
i am running 70 wt. silicone oil in my shocks, but alot of guys run 40-50 wt.
yes, the stock plastic and even the hop up aluminum redcat shocks leak oil like crazy. they do have o-ring seals in them, but they don't stop the leaks.
i tried new o-rings and i even used red locktite hydrolic sealer on the threads for the bottom collar where the o-rings are...that still didn't stop the leaks.
i got a set of traxxas t-maxx shocks for my volcano and they are incredible.
you can get a set of 8 t-maxx shocks off e-bay brand new for like $20.00.
the thing is, you only need to put 4 of them on the truck so you have 4 spare shocks.
the t-maxx shocks do not leak oil, they come with 3 sets of "pistons" to adjust the damping strength and speed, and they also come with the collars to change the spring rate.

I put TMaxx shocks on my Viper/Volcano also and agree they are a fantastic improvement. I used all 8, but it was tough to get them to fit and not hit parts of the vehicle, particularly in the back between the radio box and the rear arms. I think you are right that 4 would do the trick.

One other note - the collars preload spacers which do the same as the adjustable collars that chevyderek mentioned. They are used to adjust ride height as he mentioned. They do not adjust spring rate.

+1. It will still take the spring rate amount (3.5 pounds for example) to fully compress the spring. It does not make a 3.5 pound spring a 4 pound spring.

i have the stock shocks on my tornado bb and they used to leak really bad until i put in new o rings and shock pistons. i dont think the pistons have anything to do with leaky shocks but mine were getting kinda loose so i replaced them

I actually picked up a full set, and i had to replace the rear on my earthquake (the old one), but the front ones are just a tad too big. Like the shock has to compress like an 1/8 or 1/4 inch, and the body is a little too long too, so it cant move the arm up all the way it can go, but thats not gonna hurt anything its only a tiny bit. They are sick shocks and work amazing, i can drop my earthquake from over my head and it doesnt bottom out. But i wouldnt reccomend cause i broke a piston like that
