I have the typical Venus II setup: 120AX, 15x10, well broken in engine run likes a top (80+ flights). Decided to put in a perry pump and move the tank over the cg. VP30 pump.

When I first started running the engine, it would idle for 30 seconds or so, and then just quit. Like it's running out of fuel, but immediatly, no burping. Tried more pump pressure at idle and adjusted the idle mixture on the carb. Seemed ok, but flamed out on final leg of landing (hit a tree with my wing tip, of course!). I also had to raise my idle speed up from 1800RPM to 2000 or so. Accels are nice and clean. But this cutting out at idle has me worried.

Any suggestions on where I should go from here? Any setup hints? Anyone else run into something like this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jim

Jim if anything the engine should be extremely rich with the pump in place. I know when I installed one on my OS 160 and the pump set to factory settings the engine was very rich. The carb on the two engines are almost the same and I believe they are, and my 160 ran great. Get the engine running again and set the high end first. Then start lowering the throttle slowly to find the transition point and see if the engine leans out or starts running rich when the carb is running on the low end needle. You may be able to find your problem there and can adjust for it. Also leave the glow driver on it until you get it close and then remove the driver and you may have to do a little fine tuning. I hope this helps.

Not an expert by any means, but someone gave me this advice and it worked.
Begin by running your engine on suction to find a starting point for the high-speed needle.
Now hook up the pump. The engine should be running quite rich at this setting with the pump operating. If it's not, turn the regulator screw in a little bit (1/8 turn at a time) til it is running rich. Now set the high speed needle to a flying setting.
Now, go to mid throttle and it will probably start to load up. Shut off the engine and look into the carb. You want to have the low-speed needle just entering the jet at this point. I had to turn mine in considerably.

This is your new base setting. You'll probably have to twiddle a litte to get it just right, but you're within shouting distance. From here, use little adjustments of the pump for the midrange and little adjustments of the low speed needle for the idle.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help! I'll give it a try.

One thing though, does it make a difference if the small vent hole is pointing down? Mine was pointing up and I just corrected it.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello Jim..i think Os120ax doesnt need perry pump...especially when u put in venus II...cos,i have venus II,tank right over the CG,and power from OS120AX,mostly i fly P-09 with ease without engine problem... the pressure from the exhaust is enough to delivery fuel from tank to engine..but maybe for sure, you can try it with n with out perry pump first to proving my statement...tq jim..
