I'm looking for a first pattern plane and wondered if I could get some suggestions. My ARF budget is around $300 but I'd be willing to go up to $500 for something a little nicer and/or larger. I'm already familiar with the Venus II and Focus Sport but would like additional suggestions if possible. Thanks in advance!

Try World Models' Spot-On. They have both the 110 and the 120 size.

I really like that one. Ran into it before but couldn't find it so thanks. I've also seen some from Nitroplanes but would rather pass on those. How's the quality of the Spot-On ARF?

Spot On thread

I would look at the Sebart Wind 110. I think it's close to $700 though.

There is an enormous difference in flight quality between my big Venus and small Venus. Big planes fly better and are totally worth the extra dough.

Very nice, but $700 is too much. Like the Spot-On so far, very much, especially for the price. Any idea on the Sebart Angels? Can't get the links to work.

I like the Spot-On so far as it doesn't look too 'profiley' if that makes any sense, like the Aquilla or Epsilon 90 do. I LOVE the looks of the Osmose plane at the bottom of the Epsilon page but I'm guessing that's four figures. If it's not, PLEASE let me know right away!!!!!!!

Wind 110 only $575
Angel 50

There are a few Sebart planes in my club - 3 of the guys I see the most. All are very, very nice. All 3 are Katanas and E-powered, but I just watched one get maidened and the thing was straight as an arrow. Tracks very, very well. Very good quality. I would bet their pattern stuff flies pretty well.

Now that I got a closer look at the Angel it doesn't look like a pattern plane. Is it?

WOA!!! That Sebart Wind 110 just made $575 look acceptable!! I like it alot. How about the Osmose Evolution? I want that one if it's affordable.

I know some of the Sebart stuff is considered GP/EP but I'm not sure about the Wind. Doesn't say anything about glow on the webpage or the manual.

The Osmose is a couple grand if you want it covered.

Well, for a want to be beginner, with a limited budget, so far the $400 Spot-On has the looks I want, price I'm willing to pay and a good write up. I'm hoping for some other similar suggestions before I order one though.

If I didn't have the Venus I would really consider the Spot On. I've read a lot of good things about it - looks like a great plane for the first couple of classes.

I like the Fliton Inspire 90 @ $375 as a nice practice pattern plane. I'm flying mine on 6S , I find the 90 size and 6S setup easy on the budget. I also have 2M pattern planes but I find the I90 gets a lot of use...

Hmmm. That's an interesting plane for looks and a better price to boot. I like it! But if I fly it, it'll go from first place finishes to last

Wonder how the quality of the Inspiron is though. That guys landing gear tore off on take off at Goshen, remember? I know he had just recently epoxied it but what tore it off in the first place?

The best bang for the buck is the Focus Sport sold by Central Hobbies. Built like a pattern plane, with wing adjusters, etc, the right price, at $295, and Troy Newman has a comprehensive build thread on his site, linked to the Central Hobbies site. You can easily upgrade it later with a carbon wing tube and landing gear, if you'd like. This is a serious pattern airplane designed by Dave Guerin, one of the best in the business.

Just to get an idea as to cost, if I were to use say the least expensive decent quality ESC, Zippy batteries and Turnigy motor, what are we talking about ballpark?

I ordered one of these a couple of days ago, along with YS 110 and Hyde mount, after losing my Venus in a mid-air. Big-plane features in an affordable package, and Roxie at Central Hobbies was patient when answering my many questions. Troy's build thread is a very nice bonus.

Take a look at the Hyperion Helios 90e. I'm building one now. Beautiful fit and finish, fuselage contours almost make it look like a glass airplane. So far complete bare airframe ready to go less radio, batteries and power set weighs in at 3 3/4 pounds. 8s lipos should be the best power set up.
