Default Midwest Sundowners WARBIRD DAY: Sat. July 18 '09, NW Indiana's Biggest Warbird Event

Hoping many of you can make it to the annual Midwest Sundowners WARBIRD DAY on Sat. July 18, 2009

I live about 120 miles from the event, but have attended and participated in it nearly every year since I began flying warbirds. Altho a 2+ hour drive for me each way, it is WELL WORTH IT.

If having LOTS and LOTS of warbirds of all sizes isn't enough: they have THE BEST LUNCH of any event that I have attended: the members and wives cook up a potluck, which usually includes hot-dog, brats, smoked sausage dogs, and maybe hamburgers, PLUS all kinds of side-dishes (potato salads, veggies, cole-slaw, etc.) AND canned beverages, AND deserts (cakes, cookies, etc.), all for a modest donation.

here is link to club web-site:

From AMA Contest Calender:
Warbirds Day

7/18/09 - Wheeler, IN (C) Warbirds Day. Site: Rainford Field. Stanley Zolodz CD, 1659 W 98th Pl Crown Point IN 46307 PH:219-662-1199. Visit www.midwestwundowners.com. Any size model of military aircraft in military colors, pilots meeting at 9:30am, food on site. Sponsor: SUNDOWNERS

and quotes from thier web-site:
July 18th WAR BIRD DAY at Rainford Flying Field
Only Warbirds allowed to fly. As long as it has military markings feel free to fly.
Events will have Officials, Radio Impound Check-in, Safety Officers, lunch and Vendor(s).

Interactive Maps and Directions:

Last year was somewhat of a washout (rain), but every other year it is just GREAT. They also have a HUGE, well maintained runway with acres of non-obstructed flying space (just look at the maps).
So, I suggest anyone and everyone who can attend (even if just to observe) to see this event: you won't go away dis-appointed.

No Sam I haven't seen any Hooters Girls there yet, but who knows: maybe this year?

I will be bringing my E-powered Top Flite Mustang ARF, E-powered Hangar 9 Corsair ARF, and HOPEFULLY: my Saito 1.00 powered Top Flite P-47D ARF

Hey, at my age: I'll just stick to my hobbies (besides, I think my hobbies are cheaper!).
Looks like a good show: too bad my buddies have their Ohio Dawn Patrol the same week end.

Will see you guys on Saturday. Chow is always good. Bringing the camper this year. I'll have my 190 and 109 at least...hopefully tossing in the Corsair for good measure. Forecast is superb as of tonight. Looking forward to it.

MidWest Sundowners Warbird Day 2009: WOW!

Considering the suspect weather forcast: attendence was GREAT, and so was the weather!
Not a drop of rail all day, mostly sunny and mild (a few clouds now and then) and a whole lot better than when we had that heatwave a few years ago.
The food as usual was great also.

I took 58 pics of warbirds that were there in the AM. I failed to get pics of my own, and of a few others that showed up a little later.
A few pics have more than one warbird in them, but there are no duplicate pictures/ no plane is pictured twice.
Yes, there were a LOT of those ParkZone T-28s there (seemed like about 10). At one point, 6 of them took to the air simultaneously: those are some pretty neat, easy to fly, yet acrobatic foam warbirds. Now I need to get one.
A pair of H-9 Hellcats, MANY giant scale Mustangs, a pair of great looking '109s, about 1/2 dozen P-40s, seemed like about 4 Stukas, about the same number of giant scale Corsairs, and a Focke Wulfe design that looked kinda like a radial engined tail dragger P-38.
The Great War (WW I) was also well represented.

Yup, that about sums it up. Today pretty much rocked. I counted more than a hundred warbirds (foamies included _ Bunch of great flights with some really awesome birds. Chuck and Rich's rotte of 109's was simply awesome in the air together. Awesome to finally meet you guys after all these years now. Such a great fly in. Pretty proud to call the Sundowners my home club. I'm humbled as a member to be a part of such a fine organization and flying site with such great members. Already planning for next year. Bravo. Wish I would have remembered the camera.
