For the difference in price for a gas radial I can fuel my glow radial for a few years before I make up  the difference in cost.  Gotta clean them any way, beisdes it's a war bird, it looks better dirty!  And ya can't beat the sound of a round engine! At about a difference of 1500 to 2000$ between a gas radial and a glow radial, I could buy almost 50 gallons of glow fuel, and at 4-5 gallons a summer I am good for several years.

Its your choice, Im trying to get rid of the glow planes, they need too much maintenance and cleaning, buy a single cylinder gas and save a ton of money all around, haha. Slimey is alot different than dripping with goo. That said, its your plane, thank God I wont have to clean it or pay for the glow fuel, hahahahaa

Get us some video!

I know it's my choice, I was just looking for some advice before I made my choise as this is my first GS warbird, and things have changed over the last few years.  There are more options then when this bird was first introduced.

Maintence? Really?  I have a few Saitos and I haven't touched them in years.   They start and run perfect every time, havn't even touched the needle valves since the engines were broken in, so your right about the clean up, but not so sure about the maintence side.

Won't be any video's for a while yet, as I don't have the plane yet, and winter is here so no flying till the spring, but I will surrly post some once I get it and the weather get's warmer for the maiden.

Was just curious what you guys thought about the newer smaller radials that are out there now and if they would be powerful enough to fly this bird well.

Gasoline is cheap,
gas engines are cheap
Gas engines are reliable, I have never had a dle or dm quit in the air
once they are broke in and set up thats it
and as for the slime and clean up with gas there is no clean up
finally with the dle and all my batteries mounted in front of the fire wall it didn't need any weight to balance it

Ok gas it is, just do it.

maintenance = more cleaning, more expensive fuel. I have had a ton of engines, turbine, electric, gas, glow 2 and 4 stroke.... I wasnt clear, You didnt understand, my bad.

DHC6, you mentioned earlier that you would go for a dle55 in this case. That would be a good choice. If you are looking for reliability, ease of maintenance and minimization of hassle, I would strongly recommend a gas engine compared to a glow engine for a plane of this size, for the reasons that JohnVH and other have given above. I completely agree with them.

DHC6 I think you are going to have to go to the radial thread to get your answer

DHC6,

I'm with you, nothing beats the sound of a Radial and I will be purchasing the Evo 77 Radial for my ESM 50cc Corsair. Although there is another option to consider, CRRC 55 twin. I have one in a 1/3 scale Christen Eagle and it is a very robust engine and idles much better than a single cyl 50cc. Hope this helps, see specs below:

Type: Two-stroke piston valve petrol aircraft engine
Displacement: 55cc(27.2ccx2)
Bore x Stroke: 34mm×30mm
Carburettor: Walbro(Diaphragm & Butterfly Valve)
Max. Output: 5.6ps/7600rpm
RPM Range: 1600-7800rpm
Weight: About 1780g(Engine+muffler+CDI)
Ignition power: Auto advanced CDI(DC 4.8 Volts , 4 cell NiCad or NiMh battery) RC EXL IGNITION!!
Fuel mixture(Ratio of gasoline and oil): 25-40 : 1
Propeller: 20X12-23X8 two-blade prop( suggest to use 22x8 prop

flejter1,

I ended up with the DLE55 for now, budget made that choice.  However next winter I will be looking for a radial to put on it, and the DLE will go on something else.  The EVO77 is my first choice right now, so please keep me posted as per your all up weight, and how she flies!  The ESM corsair is a little lighter then the TF P47, but it's pretty close, so I think it will be a good comparison.  Good luck and keep us all posted!

Just wondering did anyone do anyone do anything special for the power switch and the air retract refill valve?  Just trying to get idea's of where to put these, and hide them as much as possible.  So where did you all put your switches?

I used the F/G kit from Wyliewarbirds (Tfarmer) and put a hatch up on the top of the nose. Has my air fill and switches on a neat little tray that screws in place. here are some shots of the hatch during the build. All nice and hidden when flying.

Cheers

Jeremy

Wyliewarbirds.com sells the fiberglass hatch for $10. I just ordered one! The Robart door hinges are not included but are available from Tower.

Just a word of advise to anyone equiping with DLE55 . Be sure that you get the right muffler. I got the standard J-tec muff. for DLE55 and it clears the firewall by about 1/8 inch. That is not enough. After about 100 flights cracks developed in muff. This was caused by contact with the firewall while running. Be sure that you get the muff designed for DLE55 AND!!! TF P47/P51

I think it's time to revive this thread!
I have just bought one of those planes and plan to bolt an MVVS 58cc into it.
Rather than read through this entire thread, the lazy man's option is to ask here.

Are there any particular "gotcha's" with this plane?

I built this plane, opened up the fuel tank area, put the tank near the cg. Placed my servos for the engine (throttle and choke) forward, no flex rods for me. Great flying plane. Good luck on your build.

Regards

Steve

Thanks Steve, I will make sure I keep that in mind.

The reason for the engine choice is that I'm buying this plane specifically for a racing event where the max engine size is 63cc
Normally, I probably wouldn't use a P47 to race because of the draggy front end but after the event, I plan to replace the engine with a new 80cc that MVVS have just released and has a built in starter. This is where that roomy cowling will come in handy.

All this aside, I have always had a soft spot for the P47 and in particular this one.

If I wee to do any mods, one would be to strengthen the lower chin area behind the cowl. Beef it up with another former and or stringers. I seem to have had problems with my 2 P47s in this area. It cant support the weight of the plane when resting on a stand.

The P-47 cowl isn't as draggy as you would think. Can't really explain it, but I did read it somewhere about the air going around the cowl blah, blah ,blah.

As I love to fly fast with my T/F mustang (g-62@135mph 19x14) I have seen a T/F P-47 out dive my mustang and fly as fast, with less prop than my stang. So a P-47 with a 12 pitch prop really moves out. ( 50cc to 75cc)

Remember pitch determines the speed, not horsepower. Although horsepower does help alot!!!

Very true!
The 58cc would typically like a 24x10 prop and I was planning to under prop it a bit for higher RPM, say the equivalent of a 23x10 so a 22x12 might be where I end up
Heck, just for the race, even a 3 blade 20x12

I won't be allowed any fancy mufflers so I will use the stock side dump muffler and a small, high pitch prop
This WILL be fun
