Jim , The one picture showes the stock way ..Then I started to tug on the gear and found out I better double up on the Plastic hold dows ..Then I put a washer and collett on the rear wire..Plus the bigger wheels 3in..will help If you dridt off in the grass ..I have a paved runway..Wich helps,........on a plane like this I will set the dead mans throttle ..once it touches down pull the throttle trim back to kill the engine ..I have done this before on Nose-Over prone planes ..Shure is easier to walk out and pick the plane up ,than fix a busted prop and rudder...With you being in NJ .your probably waiting for a good day ...Here in FL . I can go any day and fly..But this weekend is a bummer ..Winds up to 20MPH for the next 3 days ...I should have it finished by Wed. for a maden flight...I have just been putting everything on a Diet..I look at all kinds of ways to keep it light ...LATER Rich

Tommy, What are you doing up at 5:25 AM ..Well goint to work now but will get pix and more to ya when I return this PM.....Rich

Wow... I knew it was late but I had no idea it was THAT late! No wonder I was so tired today at work.

Whats the theory on the collet/washer on the trailing dogleg? Are you trying to prevent them from pushing through the wing in the event of a hard touchdown?

Tommy, must chime in here. Yes the way Rich has the trailing support is to keep it from pushing thru the wing. On mine I soldered a approx 1" square thin brass sheet to the support strut. I can tell you first hand that it worked very well on my last flight. Do it anyway you want but "do it" As I said in my last post the 2 point attacment of the cuff to the wing worked as it should. It stayed put while all the rest of the stuff exploded. There was no damage to the wing whatsoever.

I would think the washer would just blow through the wing sheeting on the bottom vs the top if pressed.

While it's definitely food for thought, I think I would like to see your brass sheets Jim

Flying tomorrow but not the Lion.

Tommy

In place of the washer and wheel coller simply cut a 1" square piece of 1/64 brass and drill a hole in its center. Elongate the hole so it will fit flat on the wing surface when placed on the strut support and make sure it is flat  Then solder it in place. I tinned all the surfaces where it was to be soldered and soldered it together on the wing surface. Not enough heat to bother anything on the wing. This will keep the support wire from even thinking about pushing thru the wing.  Do not glue the brass to the surface.  I speak from experience not theory. This mod works. My extremely hard landing caused both strut supports to bend into a semi  "U" shape. It took a lot of energy to bend this thing.  Easy to straighten out with a good pair of pliers. Sorry bout the pictures. My camera is not working. Again the 2 point fastening of the wheel cuff also worked. They were both in tact and did not crack or break. As I said befor the rest exploded and took a lot of CA to fix. No parts available from Hobby People which from what I have since heard is typical.

Thanks for the update Jim

If you notice HP has a bunch of new BH models listed AND some spare parts as well! Perhaps pants for the Lion will be on the next boat out of China?

Wow.. tough crowd! I think the Lion is a nice model. A lot better then I could ever build even if it was offered from say a lazer cut kit. Then again I have not flown mine yet!

Orig powered by a KMS 4120/05 on 4S I'm switching it to a 4130/07 on 6S. It might push the weight up close to that 7lb mark BUT Ill be able to swing a 15" prop vs the 12". Watts will remain the same at or about 1KW but amps will be much lower.

7 lbs sounds like a lot. What is the wing loading (in ounces per square foot) at that weight?

fellow modelers...I have one of these and love it. Magnum 70 4S is perfect. Flys wonderful. Gear were a little tough to figure out but got that worked out. ABS wheel pants are pretty cheap but work. Have about 20 flights on the model

grandstand...I was abel to balance mine with out adding any weight. I did balance it upside down. I used the recommened throws on the controls. It is a **** cat to fly. I used a Pitts style muffler. Once you land and roll out a little ways keep full up elevator in it until it stops. Wants to nose over but not bad. I don't care what the rest of the world says it is a neat plane and looks good in the air.

I think that's the new Seagull Z. The Kyosho had an all fiberglass fuse.

It’s up there for sure. Figure 58”s of wing.. 10”s of cord… 580… at 7lbs <112ozs> .. what’s that in the 27 ounce range?

Currently RTF I’m at 6lbs 7ounces so just how much heavier is 7lbs?

I’m not terribly scared as Jim W is over 7.25lbs and has not reported any nasty tendencies.

Good eye on your part. I would research it but it would cost me 2 things I don’t have. Time, Space and Money!

Yep, that's pushing 28 oz/sq ft. That's not terrible.

I've looked over the Seagull Z and it's not a bad ARF for the money. The landing gear struts look like the weakest link (just like on this model).
