I'm a newbie to gas and conversions and so can anyone tell me the displacement of the Weedeater GTI 15t engine? I've done some google searches for this engine but couldn't find any specs.

Also what about the Weedeater model 1700 displacement?

I'm looking for a small (25cc and under) engine to to a conversion on (ideally I'd like 18cc or under). I already have a 25cc Homelite that I've procured and will be working on but now my neighbor has the GTI 15t and also the model 1700 I can pick up for $5 bucks or so.

Also, as a sidenote in one of the other posts someone mentioned that "Some blowers are left hand rotation and present a problem as a model engine." Left hand rotation, isn't that counterclockwise and isn't that the direction of rotation that's needed for putting on a prop conversion.

I have a 15T GTI that was originally a 22cc and I converted it to a 32cc. The Feather Lite Weed Eater wackers are 18cc, 21cc, and 25cc and are fair convert candidates.

yep, just measured the GTI 15T I have torn apart, 21.5cc, not the best candidate but probably not the worst, it is a rear intake rear exhaust setup like a ryobi with a muffler held on by springs, there are also 32cc versions of this engine, I have 3 of the 22's and 4 of the 32's (sold two of the 22's I had as weedies to get rid of them)

just like the nitro engines you want right hand threads for the prop, that way the power of the engine tightens the threads, if you wanted to convert the engine to counter rotation then left hand threads would be fine but you would have to find left handed thread hardware...

on the featherlight weedie, 90% of all of them have a sticker somewhere on them to state their displacement, they all look identical and like Twin Star said there are several sizes out there I've found and have 18cc, 21cc, 24cc and 25cc versions, out of all of those the 24 is probbly the least desirable out of the box, I have only found them on the straight shaft trimmers with a clutch with a FL2400LE model number, if you look at the exhaust port it is about the same size as the 18cc versions, if you are up to modding it's probably not a bad engine though... I had an 18cc that ended up being too far gone to run set up for gas/glow and had it down to under under 2 pounds with prop, prop hub engine and exhaust, so they can be built light.

I've had several 21's and they work OK as trimmers but are miserable model airplane engines.  They just don't have any power unless you do a lt of work on them

The Homelite 25 and especially the 30's are better candidates

Thanks for all the replies everyone. rangerfredbob you said that you got the 18cc version trimmed (no pun intended LOL) to under 2lbs. I'm wondering if the 22cc GTI 15t version is the same size physically on the outside as the 18cc?

Also on a sidenote where can I procure the carb rebuild kits for the 15t and also the 25cc Homelite or at least the diaphragm for them?

And finally any idea on the displacement of the Weedeater Model 1700 engine?

out of the good 8 of the featherlights I have in the garage I don't have a 1700 (or if I did I trashed the plastic already) so I can't help ya on what size it is, but if it's your neighbor go look at it, there should be an emissions sticker on the powerhead somewhere that says the size, all but the old models that had a one piece gas tank and backplate have labels that I've seen (this is not including the ones that are like the GTI 15T) have these labels.

I'll go play with the 15T I have torn down and see what I can get it down to quick, I don't think it'll be as light as the 18 due to the need of an offset mount instead of just bolting it to the firewall like you can the featherlights, I'll report back in a little bit with some weights

for the GTI 15T you can expect around 3 pounds on gas/glow with engine, muffler, prop hub and carburetor and around 3.5 pounds on magneto ignition (the coil and flywheel apparently weigh about 7oz, and I hadn't trimmed the fins or even removed the starter finger things), so that's a good 8oz lighter than a homelite 25cc somehow.

as a comparison I found another 18cc that I had converted (this one should be a good runner) that I put on the ol fish scale and got 3lb even with magneto ignition, prop hub, carb and gutted stock muffler (once you get the springs off take out the two baffle plates, put it back together, 2 minute job), I had trimmed the flywheel on this one. I could be convinced to part with this one as I have a couple others... I want to put one on a 40 size at some point, ought to make a good trainer engine...

as for where to get carb rebuild kits, go to your local saw or mower shop and ask for a D20WAT or K20WAT (there's a D10 and a K10 I believe too, one is discontinued, I don't remember which) if the weedie has a Walbro carb, the D kit has mainly gaskets and diaphrams, the K kit has metal parts too... expect to pay around $10 for the D and $15+ for the K kit, you can get them for around $2 and $7 respectably if you search online. If it has a Zama carb, someone else will have to come up with the number as I don't know it off the top of my head.

Thanks for the info yet again rangerfredbob. So what I was wondering about is the weight. You mention that you were able to get one 18cc down to under 2lbs and the one you just weighed came in at about 3lbs. What would account for the 1lb or so difference in the weight?

Also do you know if the featherlite weedie 18cc and the GTI 15t are the same dimensions or even the same block/crankcase castings with the 15t maybe having a larger bore or stroke to account for the 3 or so extra cc's of displacement? Or are they a different set of castings and outside dimensions?

Thanks again in advance.

they're pretty much completely different animals, the 15T has the magneto mounted to the head while the featherlights are mounted to the schroud, the fins on the 15T flywheel protrude forward while the featherlight's go backward, they might share the same coil but thats about it

Thanks again for that info. So if the featherlight magneto is mounted on the shroud I assume that would require some extra work during the conversion to figure out a new mounting for the magneto unit when getting rid of the shroud. Interesting. Any pics of the 18cc?

No, you leave a portion of the shroud on the engine to hold the coil

I personally would take the mag off and use EI or gas/glow. The only real advantage these little engines have is their potential to be very light. With EI you can move (not much but it helps) some of the weight around, and gas/glow it eliminates the weight of the ignition all together. They are not powerhouses by any means, but they are light enough, they could be used to power a smaller plane.

Also, put a bigger carb on it (im using a WA-19A) and modify the muffler or buy a better flowing one.

Thanks for the pics and info everyone.

Now to the last of my questions which no one has touched so far. Any idea on the displacement of the Model 1700 weedeater? (The one I'm looking at at my neighbors has no stickers to identify the cc's).

if the sticker is gone there is no other way to tell but measure and calculate the volume. The funny thing about these engines is, the box they come in will say one size, the label at the store might say another, and only the sticker with the air index will be the right displacement. If it is free or really cheap i would take it, but if it is more than $20 i would leave it and look for something else.

There's too many free ones out there to be paying good money for one.

I think the 1700 is too old to have the sticker?

no matter what size it is it's most likely a better candidate than the 15T, even the 25cc version is probably lighter than the 15T, if I had to guess on size I would say either 18cc or 21cc as those are the more common sizes on the older featherlights (the ones with 4 bolt back plates), the two bolt backplate engines are more likely to be 25cc according to the handful I have. Of the old style 4 bolt backplate engines I have 3 18cc, 2 21cc 2 24cc and maybe one 25cc, of the newer 2 bolt backplate engines I believe I have 3 25cc and a 21cc

unless your project is a narrow cowled and would need a rear intake and rear exhaust setup I would suggest the featherlight, their mufflers are easier to work with

rangerbob, hmmm interesting. From my internet search on the model 1700 the only thing I could come up with other than a whole bunch of sites listing replacement parts was a vague reference to 31cc although the way the description was structured was somewhat ambiguous so that I'm not exactly sure if it meant to say that the 1700 is actually 31cc. Anyways, no biggie the neighbor only wants $5 for them so even if one of them is not what I'll end up using I can always use it for 'experiments'.

w8ye, I think the stickers on the ones I'm looking at were just lost/removed somewhere along the way....even for the GTI 15t all you can read is the 'GT(?) 15(?)' part and the rest is just smudged from wear I suppose.

As always thanks again to everyone.

do they look similar? or does the 1700 have side intake and side exhaust? Poulan made 32cc versions of the engine on the 15T but I've only found them labeled as Craftsman trimmers and blowers so far
