Regarding: "According to Denso the FK (super ignitible plug) is not available in the size we need (FK is 14mm dia thread, we need 10mm dia). " Why do our U20M-U plugs have "FK" stamped on them?

I'm stirring the pot here because we have seen a noticeable difference in plug condition between the CM-6 and U20M-U so there has to be a difference in the two plugs.

The bottom line for us is we are happy with how Phil's engine has performed in the past 25 hours of run time and will continue to use the U20M-U "FK" plugs.

It is good to know I'm not the only one with a headache any more.

Another company came out with that U grooved ground electrode many years ago and it didn't seem to work then, maybe Denso got it right this time.
As far as increasing the heat range in an engine, you are asking for major failures if you don't know what you are doing.
But they listed that the U groove created a larger more concentrated ball of fire that helps eliminate fouling, not a hotter plug, hope it works.............Thanks for the input Steve.................Ron

Let us know what you think after a few more flights.

I just received a box of the new Denso plugs - can anyone tell me what the proper gap setting should be?

Thanks in advance,

I have been gapping the Denso U20M-U (JK Plug) at .016" (inches).
Let us know if you can detect any difference from the NGK plug.

Hate to change the subject for a minute, BUT, I just recieved three fuel pumps (APS 380HV's) the plumbing is as follows fuel tank to large nipple, small nipple to carb, by-pass to return to tank. Which would mean that I need a third line for over flow when fueling up?? correct??
In short I would need three lines to my fuel tank??

The new ignition for my 4-cylinder is here.
Basically the same layout as you will have it for the radials; one box with the "intelligence", one with the coils; a modular system.
It will take some more weeks before my engine is ready enough to test it, but I will report if there is some interest.

In 3 weeks the ignition for my 180 should be ready.

I'm about to finish my Comp Arf F4U Corsair that will be equipped with a Moki 250 engine.

I have read all kind of recommendations regarding the propeller to be used, but I don't know if there's been any new suggestions based on current experience. Still don't know if to use a 3 or 4 blade Biela.

By the way, I'm going to be using the APS pump, a turbolator and now that I've read about the new spark plugs, maybe I'm going to give them a try.

Info on the Comp Arf F4U see this You Tube video starting at the 3 minute mark. It has a MOKI 250 on it with several successful flights. Bill is a very good friend, so I am sure if you ask, he will provide you with all the assistance you need.

You can reach him through the Oklahoma Sooner Squad web-site by clicking the contact tab then president at http://www.oksoonersquadron.org/video.htm. There are also several other links to videos of this plane on their video page along with other MOKI powered aircraft.

Any of you guys know when Moki is coming out with their seven cylinder version of the 250 ?

Any advantages to the design or just more possibilities of something going wrong ?

Does the S 180 have the same outer diameter as the S150, 255mm?

What about the 7-cyl models, what is the smallest outer diameter radial engine model from Moki available?

And then the outrageous question; any plans of producing a twin-row radial?

I run my engines and the pumps off a 5 cell NiMH of 5000 mah. I run the engine/pump from a regulator that provides a constant 5.1 volts. I hope this helps,

Jerry

I had an interesting event with my Moki 250 this week.

Cut the story short, I had to plug the tank went line to do some inspection on my plane and did not remember to take it away before the flight.

Got the bird up in the air and after some 5 minutes it started to cut at full throttle. after the second cut I landed the plane safely and noticed the plug on the vent line.

Anyhow, lesson learned there but the point is that I don't have an electric pump and still I was able to fly over 5 mins. I never had any doubts on the moki's fuel pump, but I never quessed that it has the power to pump against vacuum.

Just wondering of anyone ever measured what kind of a vacuum the pump can produce?

The component you are referring to is not a pump; it’s a pulse generator. Through the actions of the generator it’s the carburettor that does the sucking through its diaphragm “pump”

Your five minute flight was due entirely upon the tank being able to be compressed, in other words had the tank been totally rigid the engine would have run out of fuel almost immediately.

But I think his point is a good one. If the stock setup was marginal on pulling ability the need to pull fuel AND compress the tank would have been too much but it was able to both pull fuel and compress the tank what I'm assuming is a considerable amount while dealing with flight forces.

However the argument in favor of pumps has been more one of reliability, at least to me.

My 150 is still awaiting the new ignition anyway.

Whit

Thanks for the great information have not seen any problems so far with my 250 the fuel tank is above the carb so the system has and advantage to start with. Like a fuel system in most of the old Piper cub aircraft of the 1950 they all had gravity feed fuel system and if inverted for very long they would run out of fuel. the Model has a heavy BVM brass fuel clunk and it will follow the gravity so when inverted it work great.

Not sure if the fuel pump is the thing to do right now,

Have any of you had to clean the pulse line and how have you done that with gas or wd 40 or just air.???

A short while ago we were talking about the grease, or lack thereof, in the front engine case. I had added some engine oil and a small amount of STP to make it a little more "sticky". I pulled #4 intake lifter to fill and pulled #3 intake to determine the oil level, which is just below the centre of the crankshaft. This past weekend I flew the 400 and am now seeing an oily grease residue coming past the lifters, (a slight amount) so we are obviously getting some lube splashing or flung around inside the case. I had a small amount come out the breather hole on the pulse pump, and when I pulled the ignition sensor unit, there was a good coating of lube on the cams.
I certainly feel better actually seeing some lubrication residue, rather than hoping that there was adequate lube from the grease.

Thoughts????

Cheers,
Dave.

I have a 215, 250 and a 400 and I have been using 6volt nicat system with out any problems. Some fellas have been using a voltage regulator set at around 5.1 -5.5 volts  along with that  for extra peace of mind which is probably a good idea. helps to protect the electronics .
