Let me tell you the whole story. A friend of my famliy saw me flying one day and decided that he wanted to fly. He had a Freshman Trainer 40 sitting in his garage that he built 25 years ago, but never flew(didnt know how to fly). He even had the original MRC radio in it. He charged the batteries and tested them and they were fine. He brought it to the field to have me fly it. Let me just say, the plane LOOKED like it had been in the garage for 25 years. I looked the plane over and all looked good. We fired up the motor and up she went. Took awhile to get her trimmed out, but then it flew pretty well. Landed safe and all was well.

It is now about 2 weeks since the first flight and he brought it to the field again. Again I checked it over and all seemed well. We fired it up and I took her up. All seem good, then it happened. I was making a nice easy left turn when the plane made a quick jab to the right. I knew something was wrong, so I tried for an emergency landing. We fly in a large hay field which was just mowed. The only thing in the area to hit was the farmers truck sitting in the middle of the field. I was trying to bring her in as easy as I could, but it just wouldnt respond to my commands. I got it turned around and headed back to the strip but the "magnet"(truck) was pulling it away from us. I killed the throttle but she just kept flying toward the "magnet". I then pulled the throttle trim all the way back to kill the motor and it finally crashed about 30 feet from the truck.

We retrieved the plane and I noticed that the bottom of the front of the plane was blown apart and soaked with fuel. Then he said,"Thats where all that fuel went". I was like,"what?". He said that he had a leak in the fuel tank about a week ago and tried to patch it with epoxy. It didnt work, and the tank leaked. In that plane, the Rx battery is built into the plane under the fuel tank in a seprate compartment. It was soaked with fuel and we determinded that it caused it to fail. He retired the plane and the radio for good. He said he didnt care if I crashed it anyway. He just wanted to know if it would fly. I have to say, it was the ugliest plane on the planet anyway. I just wish i had gotten some pics. You all would agree.
