Today, we had one of those unusual sunny & mild days in UpState New York.  So, some of
the "USUAL SUSPECTS" (Greg, Mat, Eddy, Devin, John, Jim & me)  got together at the field
to complete some review photos & videos.  Eventhough the wind was about 20 mph and kind
of gusty, we were committed and it turned out to be a great outing.  Hey, the wind gusts did not
bother me at all, because I did the photography and my flight instructor, JR's Devin McGrath,
flew the Toledo and I just gotta tell you that we all have only one thing to say about the Hangar 9
Toledo Special;

"SWING BABY"  Ohhhhh......Yeahhhhh!!!!

My guess is that this airplane flies much like SIG's Rascal 40 which I've flown for a couple of years.

I was surprised with the flight time and power of the Toledo Special.  The battery is a Thunder Power
4S3850mAh V2 and we were getting flight times in excess of 10-12 minutes with a useage of only
about 60% of the battery capacity.  These flights were just easy, basic manuevers with a few verticle
up lines and some acrobatics.  Power is not an issue with the E-Flight Power 46, which I chose over
the Power 32.  I really enjoy flying this plane and I think you will too.  Thank you for your post.

The plane will fly strong aerobatics or simply cruise around at a slower pace. If you like the way it looks, you'll love the way it flies!

Albsurfer did notice the orientation of the receiver and it's remote and took the time to share his observation,

One of my Pals and RCCR club member, Paul Weigand, who just happens to be one of the
best modelers in the the entire RC World, liked the " Retro" look of the Toledo Special so
much that he bought one and did his Special magic on the Special.  To me, Pauls mods
and refinements were so fantastic that I just had to show them off.  I sure hope that you
enjoy them as much as I have.

Status: offline 		Paul figured that the cowl really needed some intake venting for cooling the battery
and ESC during flight, so in keeping with the Retro look a plain opening was not
an option.  So, Paul made his own vent style grill.

Oh, the little red plug on the left, is the Maxx Products High Current Arming Switch (# 6970)
that we have been using quite often in high power electric setups.  I believe that Paul has
used an AXI 4130-16 outrunner with a 16 x 10E  APC prop, Jetti 77 Opto ESC and this setup
puts out just about 1400watts on 6S 30C packs.

Then, Paul thought that a lime green pinstripe would look good between the blue and cream
color scheme.  This was all done by hand and it would have taken me DECADES to do this.

Now take a look at the tail wheel pant that Paul custom created.  Is that the best, or what?

Status: offline 		Then it occurred to Paul that the underside of the plane needed some contrast so that at altitude,
the Toledo would be visible.  I think that Paul's Toledo will be the most totally visible Toledo
Special that ever flew!  Ohhhhhhhhhh.............Yeahhhhhhhhhhh!!!  Don't you think?  By the
way, each Majenta square was hand cut and applied one by one!  That's amazing!

Then, Paul decided that he wanted to find a way to insert the batteries without having to turn the Toledo
over to access the bottom battery hatch.  And, Paul did not want to bother with constantly removing and then
replacing the wing, just to change batteries.  So he figured it out, after he build the custom battery tray, which
he placed over the CG.  Have you figured it out yet, or do you need a few more hints?

Status: offline 		OK, here are a few more photos of the custom battery tray.  By the way, notice the battery box cover which has
been lightened with those holes which also function for allowing proper cooling of the batteries.  Paul does
nothing 1/2  way! 

Well, there it is.......THE WINDSHIELD!!!!!!  Paul just hinged the top of the windshield and placed two little
screws on either side to hold the windshield in place after the battery is either replaced or removed for
a re-charge.  Absolutely perfect, right?    I didn't figure it out either!  Of course, I got it when I started to
photograph the Toledo for this update.

Status: offline 		I am always impressed with Paul's work, but I really enjoyed seeing how he subtly transformed his
Toledo into a unique customized Weigand Special.  Ohhhhhhhhhhh..........Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
As soon as the weather permits, here in Upstate New York,  it will be interesting to fly our Toledo's
together.  I know one thing for sure;  Paul's will get most of the attention and rightfully so!

Lane,

I gotta tell you that I'm confident you will be totally pleased with theToledo Special.  As an
"OLD DOG" Grandpa, I tell it....like I see it!   Everything that I said in the build and review,
was accurate from my perspective. 

Eventhough, I currently fly quiet and clean electric power, I think that any relieable,
modern 2 or 4 stroke engine would be acceptable to give you the proper power to
really enjoy flying the Toledo.  The Saito-62 would be perfect!   Let us know when you
get your Toledo and be sure to post as you build.

Status: offline 		I inquired about picking one up at Toledo and Horizon Hobby said they wouldn't have them there.  Shipping was free anyway from the website so I ordered mine yesterday.  I recently got H9's older 1/4 Scale Super Cub so I'm planning to use this as a warm-up.  I'll post pics when I get it.

Status: offline 		papajeff,I just started assemblying my Toledo Special tonight. Also my 1st electric of any size. I have a new Axi 4120/14. It bolts right in and fits cowling perfect. I have a Zoar 14x7 and Zoar 13x6.5 wood props. Will the 60 amp E-flite esc be enough?? I can't find amp ratings on the Axi anywhere and I'm new to electrics. OH,4S 5000 30c batts. Would appreciate any advice as I'd like to maiden this week end. THANKS,RACJ

I'm sure that you will be pleased with your Toledo.  Your Axi 4120-14 motor should be fine, but I do
suggest that you test your set-up with a watt meter, before your maiden flight, to make sure that
your 60A ESC will handle the amps.  I would test using both props and compare the results to see
which prop is more efficient.

It is important to determine watts per pound that your power system produces, as you want
to be around 100+ for Sport Agressive flying.  For comparison, my stats are as follows;

Motor:                  E-Flight Power 46
Prop:                   14 X 7E  APC
Battery:               Thunder Power 4S 3850mAh (30C)
Flying weight:       6 1/4lbs.
Meter results:       A - 51     V - 15.6    W - 805   equals @ 130watts per pound

Status: offline 		The chart shows the props in about the range I have but it's like everything else I've found on Axi's:no constant amp or burst ratings. I have a meter on order but don't know if it will get here. Might take both props to field and and see if someone has their meter. On 14x7 or 13x6.5 I'd think Axi motor would be fineI just don't want to lose plane with ESC failure. THANKS,RACJ
