A lot of things happend this year, and as I said the PC9, and other stuffs, take me a lot of time.
Now I am back on the 38 I hope for a long period of time.
Here is the first photo I made of the building of the gondola :
 
To get an idea of the size, the workbench is a door.

I may cut the longest rib today on the CNC, will see how it looks.

For people who know the ziroli plan, I doubled the F8 former in order to be able to unmount the gondola from the wings. The wing is glued to a kind of ski that will slide on the spars.
4 screws will maintain everything in place.

Here are some news, I finally moved again, so here is the progress of the 38, not so much in fact.
 
You can see the two first ribs in place but not yet glued.
An other view

The volume is coming slowly.
Under the P-38 the new toy a 33% Piper Pawnee.

Some other rib cuts.
I have a problem with rib 2, I will probably have to cut another couple or it.

The two last rib will be done shortly so I will be able to put the upper crutch.

Status: offline 		Now the wing is separate from the gondola.

Here is how I glue the formers square from the base.

 I change the size of the former to 2 milimeters instead of 4. A big gain of weight. I will do that for all shape formers, not structural.

Here some photos

Little modification from the plan to make the ladder.

All the bottom former are in place


Starting to fill the structure.
 
On the table, the photos are those of G-Pete's P38, that helps a lot.
All the bottom lines are in place and glued.

Here you can see the space I left for the ladder at the rear of the gondola

Status: online 		 I was wondering if you were still working on this fantastic bird?  I'm building one also but it's 1/8 scale and I have it posted on RC Groups under War Birds, but I to have broken away from building on it am now working more on my Brian Taylor 1/8 scale Mossie.
I hope you get back into your build soon there not very many people building out of wood any more and this is a very nice project!! keep up the good work please, we need to keep this art alive!!

Yes I continue on the 38. Here is where I am.
Strating to work on the stab, nothing special on the building very classical.
On the left the plastic 38 that gives me details. 
Just something I did for some reglementation reasons, I needed to cut the elevator un two parts because here in France it is mandatory for plane over 25 kg.

On the right the wing key that I receive from a friend of mine diameter is 42 cm.
The elevator is completly sheeted the stab just on the upper surface, I need to put the fixation parts for the elevator and the stab in it to sheet the lower surface, the it will be done.

It looks to me to heavy so I will cut the hard wood to make it lighter.

Status: offline 		Hello: I am new in RC Universe an very glad to find such a project. I am still wondering at you. Congratulations for that kind of giant model. Nice job.

I am building a giant P-38 Lightning too, not such size but very close. 1/4,28 (23,3%) 3700 mm of winspan. As you can see, nearly twin. From Ziroli plan like you, I drew a new CAD plan from myself with personal solutions. I'd like to share our experience in the project, if you don't mind of course. Just like you, I do not know the final weight, but I expect that will be in 25-30 Kg (55-66 lb) All the stuff is normal 1/8 plywood and 1/8 x 1/4 samba spars. I have already got two 80 cc engines that I hope they could lift the model.

You did a really good job on yours. And you are far ahead from me. Mine has not change for this time beeing, but sometimes life did not let you the time to it.

When building such a project  like yours, is good to have some breaks for organizing ideas in mind and thinking about them. The family and job are very important, too.

My P-38 is taking to me 2 years up to now, CAD design time apart. As you know, there are a lot of hard and difficult stages at the construction proces. Fist of all, I got the landing gear set because I thought that was the most important need; besides it is not easy to find anyone competent to manufacture such a sized set.

Like you do, I have not got the engines at first either because the is not critic; there is a lot of clear space under cowling. However, I was not sure if a twincylinder was a good idea because there is not enough cooling inputs. So I decided to install a standard singlecylinder plant. And this is the reason of the scale of mine. By the way, they are counter rotating.

One more important item to think is the final weight. This is a traditional heavy model and flying results depend on a light construction. Main formers are made from 1/8'' standard plywood, even the ribs which are whole perforated; main spars are from 1/8'' x 1/4'' samba wood and the fuselages are covered with 1/8'' balsa. It is here where you can save weight but not in landing gear nor powerplants that are heavy.

Against my usual finishing procedure, I have renounced to make movable or sliding parts, dropping tanks and all those movable details that make a model weighted. I used fowler flap hinges from Robbart. Of course, rivets and panels will be present.

We can change more details if you want.
