Any word on a 4-stroke diesel conversion?
Is this practical, or even a good idea at all?

We at Davis Diesel feel there are enough parts in a four stroke and we prefer to leave the poor things alone.

Definition of a 4 stroke engine: for 3 strokes it beats itself to death and for 1 stroke it produces power. My, what an efficient system.

Ya but they sure produce alot of power on that one stroke and they suuuuure dooo souuuund gooood!

Thats why I prefer them, the sound mostly.

It would be nice to swing even larger props with them too! and idle lower, and use less fuel...

I bet if u made a conversion for say saito 100s..and it worked.. people might just have a new toy to spend money on..

Just an idea.. I guess my question is:
CAN it work?

I never said it wouldn't work. As far as sound preference I think that is a personal thing. But I do agree that it is more pleasant to listen to a the sound of a pulsing whoopee cushion than to a screaming me me. By the way a diesel is quieter than a glow 2 or 4 stroke. For those that are offended that we thing there noisy we make very quiet mufflers for both 2 and 4 stroke glow. check out our website. davis diesel.

Niel Tidey, designer of "Laser" 4 stroke engines in the UK, made diesel versions of his old 75 four stroke (now updated to the 80 size engine) for some of his customers.

They were primarily sold in Germany, in an effort to help modellers there meet ever more restrictive noise regulations.

An e-mail to Neil may ascertain whether the engines are still available. I believe they were only ever made to order. I expect they would be more expensive than the equivalent glow Laser.

I e-mailed Neil and was told that they are not presently selling nor thinking about selling a 4 stroke diesel. He was kind enough to let me know that it would be difficult for a lay person to do the conversion. The engine needs to be long stroke which would need a new head and cams. Lou Furco ells the gadjet to convert a 4 troke to diesel but you need to use a special fuel which may or may not contain kerosene. What's the energy content of such fuel is unknown to me. I may try it just for the heck of it.

Hi all, i am new here.

I have 2 4 stroke diesel, where i has converted to diesel, it is not difficult.
First engine are a Os FS40 surpass and second engine are a Magnum 52FS AR.
Here are my pic, but not of Magnum

quote:

The engine needs to be long stroke which would need a new head and cams.

Long stroke are not important, it works well with short stroke, the cylinder liner must be lower to same height as piston (removed material from crankcase to lower cylinder liner.), At Os FS40 cams are same as before(but not at newer version of Os fs 40), removed a parts of material in cylinderhead to increase compresion ratio. Used casket to adjust height between liner and head to prevent knock valves. Maked a extra contrapiston in extra contrapistoncylinder srewed to glowplughole. Start very easy and reliable idling and turn big propeller

Magnum cams are a bit difference from Os FS 40, removed a part of side on cam for intake valve cause valve opened early and knocked at piston. Valvelifter has plane, then i maked these plane surface to halfball, then it will not valves knockin at piston.

How to start 4 stroke dieselengine (contrapiston must be ready adjusted at test running): Turn out fuelneedle 1 tturn out, choke carburettor with finger, prime engine 3 times (turn crankshaft 3 times), rotate to compression begins then flip propeller, it will start. Adjust fuelneedle 1 turn back.

Dieselfuel: 32 percent ether, 2 percent isopropyl nitrate, 15 percent oil the balance kerosene.

Hope my english are understandful for all readers

Well, I do have an OS 48 Surpass sitting idle....

I would like to hear more!

It looks like a pre combustion chamber neat. can you get us a clearer picture very novel approach for a small engine conversion what prop and rpm

Actually looks like he has built a baby BUKH ( Danish marine diesel I had one) it was water cooled however

My engine ran at 8-9000 rpm with 12x6. But i was afraid to lean out fuel in case not enough lubricating the engine. Because i used motor oil at sae10W40 in dieselfuel. Castor oil are expensive here in Norway. Which oil can i use in dieselfuel for 4 stroke engine? Full syntetic motorcycle oil at 20W50?

The combustion chamber are not same as in Bukh diesel or in Mercedes diesel, both engines has injector above comustion camber. I use the "lanova cell" with contrapiston.. and it is too cause to difficult to place contrapiston direct in cylinderhead. fuelmixture presses in the cell and ignite, then blow out of cell..

Lanova cell. A special combustion chamber also called energy cell, for diesel engines of high rotary speeds.

I shall send better pictures of engine parts. Here are not much carbon builds up in combustion camber and piston!

Jens very neat concept I know none of our model diesels are injected but that external chamber idea
is new to me.. years ago I worked on and installed convential diesels in fishing boats I do not
think anyone has developed tiny injection pumps and injectors but you got around it
8000 sounds pretty good since as glow we run maybe 9000 tops (at least I do) on glow
At any rate a very good sucess story

When, I was growing up on the farm in Western Pa. we had FARMALL Diesels that had Auxillary combustion chambers, a Case Tractor and a Catterpillar D2 Dozer with a PowerCell. And somebody else called theirs the EnergyCell before the battery stole that name.
