Why would you want a model that you need to drag around the sky holding in right rudder most of the time when you can do what you do on almost every other model and build in a little right thrust??

BobH -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (8/27/2010 9:06 PM)

FYI The full scale Mustangs as well as other full scale AC have offset in the verticle stab.

LQUAN -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (8/27/2010 9:24 PM)

Yup, that's how full scale deal with right thrust issue, with a small trim tab on the rudder. For RC warbirds with large open cowl like AT-6, P-47, etc. a little right thrust won't be noticeable. On warbirds with cowls right up to the spinners like P-40, Spitfire, etc., it will look weird. We can do the same by adding a functional trim tab on the rudder or trim the rudder.

mike early -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (8/27/2010 10:20 PM)

full scale does it in a few different ways...

fockewulf37 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/13/2010 5:07 AM)

Well I finally got around to getting to the spit to install a cockpit. It just for fun trail fitted my ESM 50cc cocpit in. Its way too shallow. I do have a 1/4 scale Japanese pilot that I will work around. I made the first cuts . This is a really beautiful plane...

How are the motors fitting up in these things? I got a look at Pauls install on a ZDZ 80 and it shows his excellent craftsmanship but he does have a hole or two in the cowl. Does the 3w 80 fit completely inside? It looks like with a 1" prop spacer the zdz80 would sit back in far enough to not need any holes. Cooling may get interesting though and you would need the right header to make it work.

Paul has a book that shows a real spit wing under construction I believe the wheel was not centered in the well either.. With the forward cant in the gear, the wheel travels forward and down on extension. The wheel needs to be slightly aft in the well when retracted so it can clear the edge on extension...

fockewulf37 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/24/2010 4:53 AM)

Well guys here is what i did for a cockpit for this plane. I still have to do something for the head rest. I looked at the instructions for this plane and they don't even show opening up the area behing the canopy...

This one will be at about a 3rd the cost.

philthierry -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/24/2010 1:28 PM)

 Hello fockewulf37,

I find the super cockpit of your spitfire.Dit me, did you change the size, or it is the same as Kmp 50cc?

fockewulf37 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/24/2010 2:11 PM)

Thanks

This was a totally new cockpit built around a 1/4 scale pilot. I had a 1/4 scale pilot from the Pilot People in the UK. So it is full depth for this pilot.

I still have to do the head rest and armour plate...

fockewulf37 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/25/2010 3:38 PM)

I finished off the cockpit by adding the armour plate to the chair and to the head rest. I did not cut into the area behind the main canopy. That ,I did explain in my installation vid's what could be done.

Here are my installation vid's for this cockpit:

Very good explanations, and more, vidéo.Je will continue to monitor your installation, which gives me a good idea to mount mine.

Ps: sorry for my English, I hope you understand me!

fw190 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/26/2010 8:30 PM)

Looks great Ty!

Will order a set from you when I get to this project. My kit should be arriving soon.

fockewulf37 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (10/27/2010 6:30 PM)

Thanks for the comments guys...

philthierry your english has been fine....

fw190 -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (11/4/2010 8:19 PM)

Well I got my kit and it looked great, the parts fit is excellent and the overall look to the model is very nice. The only thing I disliked is the button head screw they used to replicate flat dzus fasteners to the cowl and front fuselage area. It is a bit odd as they all seem to stick out. Not hard to sand flush, so not a major problem there. I will be fitting a ZDZ100 inline that I already have so its going to take a bit of modification to mount and run extra ducting from the radiators. I will also have to mod the elevator as I always use two elevator setup with separate linkages. The flap's inner area is as crude as the original Fiberclassic with foam sheets between the fiberglass. I will have to mod that so the inside flaps will look better with scale ribs.

The problem I have is way too many projects on the table before I can get to this kit, however I think this kit goes together fairly easily and if you don't have to modify anything it will still look great and the build is close to an ARF. You get excellent value for the money with this kit and you can probably build this airplane in as little as 2 months, if you don't make too many modification and go with a single cylinder motor, also it seem very light enough that a G62 can fly it around in scale manner, however without the big loops.

didiwatt -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (12/16/2010 9:48 PM)

I decided to use servo hatches like Comp-Arf does in their 3-D airplane wings. These are available from D Balsa and are the standard size. Not that hard to install.

I also opened up the area around the retract mount area and fitted a plywood plate to cover as much as possible. Again, not that much extra work

didiwatt -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (12/16/2010 10:56 PM)

I was worried that the skirts would flutter in the breeze, so I left the axles long and slotted the skirt for compression of the gear. I then used a nylon washer with a wheel collar on the outside. Now I can compress the skirt tight against the wing skin. Worth a try I thought.

didiwatt -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (12/16/2010 10:59 PM)

Using a ZDZ 80, the older style with a pitts muffler. I was disappointed how much cowel I had to remove around the muffler but I will live with it.

You wont see it from 20 feet away. It is functional and tidy. Well done mate.

Cheers,

WARBIRDRCER -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/4/2011 3:53 AM)

Hello Spitfire builders,

1. Where do you buy a WABO main landing system, and is it equal to or better than a Sierra?

2. Any optional tail wheel assemblies?

3. What is the width of the cowling at firewall and spinner bulkhead? Wondering what engines will fit the best without much cutting.

4. Is the instruction book provided now?

5. Has anyone questioned CompArf about the landing gear centering issue, and if so did you get a reply?

6. How does the DA-85 fit the cowl? Any photos out there?

7. How are the projects going?

Thanks

lazy eight -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/4/2011 4:52 AM)

Hey guys I justed ordered a new Comp Arf spit and will be running a New DA 85. Do any of you guys have pics of the exhuast instalation? I want to keep eveything in the cowl. I think the engine will have to be set back and have a prop extension installed on the engine. Your thoughts please!

James

Moggy -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/4/2011 2:14 PM)

You can download the instruction manual here: altecare.com/spitfire.htm

didiwatt -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/4/2011 11:38 PM)

Ty:
I just sent you an email to order a cockpit kit. Nice job.

Have you had a chance to work on the exhaust pipes on the cowl yet. I am just pondering how the exhaust pipes are attached to the cowl to look like they are inset if you know what I mean.

Paul

lazy eight -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/11/2011 4:51 AM)

Do Any of you have pics of the DA 85 installed with a tuned pipe? Or a Can muffler?

Lazy Eight

lazy eight -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/21/2011 5:04 AM)

Is this thread dead?? Come on guys Lets see your engine install and exhuast with the DA 85!! My Spit came today what a nice kit.

WARBIRDRCER -> RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build (1/21/2011 3:15 PM)

lazy eight, I received mine yesterday. It sure is a nice plane.
