Bob,
I used some leftover retract mounting wood that I had around.
Any hard wood should work well.
Lately, I've been partial to 1/4" luane board.
Not sure what you may call it in Germany.
Home Depot and Lowe's (home improvement centers) have it here in the 'states'.
It's like a 4'X8' sheet of plywood but the center has a soft hardwood and
they laminate a veneer on both sides.
I like it because it gives me a 'weak' link for a possible bad landing.
I use sheet metal screws to hold the retract to the Luane board but
the screws pull out on hard landings.
Easy to fix by just gluing some toothpicks in the holes and re-drilling,
or just replacing the wood.
The thickness of the 2 mounts was made so the bottom of the retract just clears the bottom
piece of plywood that spans the fuse.
Hope this answers all your questions.
Good luck:
Sam

Samparfitt Nice thread on the p38 and I love the 62 convertable. Where are you getting the Sonitic tronic hinges? I checked Tower and can't find them in their cataloge. Thanks

Excellent read, thanks so much for providing all that detail on your building and set-up.
Have you had any more flights? Tried landing w/flaps yet?

Thanks,

Been too busy flying other planes.
Sold off all my glow stuff and got into gas.
I kept my twins even though they are glow.
Got two more coming in: P-61 and B-25.

If you've already read my comments on flaps, then never mind, but:

The VQ lands really nicely with flaps, almost sports-plane slow. Please note Twinman's advice on pairing flaps with a little down elevator (he and I both used 1/8" . Best way to do that is program a landing switch so the elevator goes down automatically when you hit the flaps. Remember, then, that the elvator will deploy a lot faster than the flaps, so don't do it at too low altitude or let the little "mini-dive" scare you. Naw, didn't scare ME !!

samparfitt:

Whatcha doin' with gas? I now have 3 P-38 gassers and a P-61. The trouble with twinsanity is it has no limits!

If GSP doesn't come through with their 114" P-38 in Jan,
I'll take one of those P-38's off your hands!
This year, I picked up a Ziroli 102" AT-6, a GSP 96" P-51, a TF 85" P-51 ARF and a Byron 87" Hellcat.

Hoping that TF brings out the 85" P-47 in ARF form.
Would also be nice to see a gas P-40.
Also, got reserved the GSP's 96" Corsair.

All Gassers, No Hangar Queens:

All are ready to fly. All have flown several times recently.

Clockwise from front: Yellow, Ziroli, Robart, CBA.

Please don't show this picture to anyone, lest they think me mad !!

(Oops !!)

Too bad this is kind of my "puttin-'em-up-for-the-winter" picture.

I should have posed in it holding the tailfeathers of my VQ, which is about all that was left.

The only thing better than a P-38 is three of them.(coooool)
My P-61 will be from VQ so it won't be as impressive as your gasser.

I'm not sure but what the VQ-61 might be a nicer plane than the Ziroli. At 45#, the Ziroli's a handful to get back and forth to the field. And at 90", the VQ is still gonna be pretty impressive. If it flies anything like the Ziroli, you're gonna fall in love with it. A very agile and gentle plane, with an almost flat-bottom wing.

How do you like your Hellcat? I was recently given a book: Hellcats Over the Phillipine Deep, by a pilot off the WWII CVL carriers, John Smith. It got me fired up about maybe building a Hellcat, particularly one with an oversized gas engine.

MT,
Just picked up the Hellcat a week ago.
Still preping her.
The 96" P-51 is ready and I'm taking her out today(just got her about 2 weeks ago).
Nice weather in this part of the country is not easy to come by at this time of year.
May not get the Hellcat in the air until Spring.
I had a lot of servo jitters on the P-51.
Added chokes, filters, etc.: helped but didn't eliminate them until someone told me to get a PCM receiver.
Big difference: walked across the street to my neighbors house(about 150') with the antenna down and no jitters.
It's worth the extra 60 bucks to put them in.
They're going in all my planes from now on.

I hear ya' on weight: the P-51 is a handfull.
Perfect size for me seems like 85-90".
At 87", the Hellcat is so much easier to handle.

Just got the kit, first impressions......

Kind of suprised how un-big it is, I expected a larger plane (my big eyes, I guess). The fit and construction is overall pretty good, with the exception of the engine pod top front (I read a similar comment here earlier) and the superchargers seem kind of wimpy and flexible next to the cowling and pod, they don't fit as nicely. I used the stock screws to mount the wings, but will remove and sh**can them shortly, replacing with hex screws.

It seems so heavy, next to the other arfs I've seen and built. I can't believe the wing is so small, although I'm sure it's scale. The spinners seem overly heavy as well, but nice additions. 3-bladed (I guess that answers THAT question)

It looks like the inner/outer wing seam is exposed, yuck. Also, there's no clean way to break this pup down for transport: the inner wing screws are covered by the engine pod.

VQ provides wooden (I hate to say hardwood) dowls for the engine pod mounts to wing mounts, but bamboo for the tail. ??
Also, it looks like there's one missing hinge slot on each rudder.

The engine cowls are very nice, but I think there is no airflow designed in.

I have to say that I'm totally impressed with the fowler flap set-up. I guess that alone might take a week or so of evenings, if it were't already done for you. Nice.
The big parts fit nice, but the little stuff is going to drive me nuts.

Wish me luck.
