It's been a couple seasons since I've flown my P-38 so I thought I'd do some upgrades.
That one small air tank scares me so I'm adding two more.
Initially, I thought I could add one more in the center section: no way.
I saw there was room in each boom so I'm putting one in each boom and running the air lines to them
is easy.
Sticking a throw rod from the end of the center wing allows me to pull the air line through
the center hole and out the end of the wing.
I cut a small hole in the top of the wing and routed the line through that and to the back of the boom.
(Of course the cowl and top fiberglass cover had to be removed first.)

First picture:
Routing the line to the boom.

Second picture:
Hooking up the tank and putting her in the boom with some velcro.
The new tanks go behind the wheel well in the back of the boom.
These tanks are light so CG shouldn't be affected.
A couple 'T' lines and I can connect the new tanks to the old center one for a lot more air volume.

Next, I want to add another battery pack (work on that later).

First picture:
I enlarged the holes in the bottom of the cowls to insure adequate cooling.

Second picture:
Second battery and on/off switch installed into the Aux 3 port of the receiver.
The second battery is slightly forward of CG so the affect is minor.
A little velcro holds her in place.
Not much room for wrapping the battery in foam so I left it off.
The receiver was on that balsa plank but I moved it to the bottom of the center fuse next to the 1st air tank.
Routed about 4 wires from the top to the bottom which was easy to do.
A voltwatch was also put in the cockpit.

Third picture:
It takes much longer now to fill up the 3 air tanks versus just one.
On her back(!!) the main retracts with those heavy air brakes,
those springs in the air cylinders can't move them in the down position,
but on her belly, no problem.
All gear doors have been removed (fortunately they were all screwed on)
until I'm sure she's flying OK and the gears work.
Ready to rock-n-roll.
Maybe Sunday, I can fly her.

Sam,
I'm having a rough time getting the gear doors set up, can you please post some photos of your arrangements? Did you use the supplied hinges?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete,
My gear doors are presently off.
I had trouble with them too.
I used sonictronic's with springs on the hinges.
I don't remember if VQ supplied them or not.
Unfortunately, I put the hinges right where the wheel closes
so the wheel hits one hinge (this is with brakes).
It's been a few seasons for flying her,
but I remember the retracts having trouble closing the doors.
They are Spring air just like on the P-61 but the P-61 works and the P-38 didn't.
I may have an air restrictor on the P-38 in which case, I may have to remove it.
The P-61 has larger retracts so also, maybe the P-38's retracts can't handle the extra resistance.
After a few flights, I'll work on the doors and let you know if I come up with anything.

Got my 'maiden' (been two seasons) flight in today.
Took awhile to sync the engines and some tightening of set screws on the struts.
Only needed one click on the ailerons.
Pretty uneventful flight: good!
Retracts worked good with no adjustments needed in the up position.
When the fowlers flaps were lowered, she ballooned up so they went back up.
After the fact, I was going pretty fast when I put them down.
I kept the speed pretty high because reduced throttle was causing some hesitation on the power.
It was pretty hot and humid so that may have affected them.
After landing and a break, I checked the engines on the ground and the low end needed another 1/8 leaner
and I had to reset the high end back to 2 3/4 open and then lean the high end to get good RPM's.
Inverted, the OS FX starts at this setting and usually ends up around 2 turns open at 8500 RPM's.
After the first flight, the engines may have been more stable on the second flight but it was noon and getting pretty hot
(plus the cross wind was kicking up).

My ultra precision (UP-3) just came in.
They make real nice air valves.
Time to install her in the Byron P-47.
The original air valve is leaking.
With a little luck, I may get her up tomorrow morning.

Hi,

I am starting to build my vq p38 now and trying to get a buy list ready. Can you please tell me how many servos, servos extensions, Y harness, Y reversers, batteries and receivers needed in this plane?

I have 2 YS63 ready for this plane and thinking of getting onboard ignition system and gyros, this will be my second twin engine airplane and the first one that I will build.

Thanks for your help

wow, that's awesome twinman. I would ask you for another picture with the gear retracted up, but I know that wouldnt be possible because of the door.

Do the wires that go to the steering servo has some sort of spring to keep the tension when the gear is up?

Another question, who makes a low profile "propotional" servo that turns 180 degrees? I am thinking of using a retract hitec hs75 servo like what Sam did but I hate not having the capability to go half way and full way.

thanks for the close ups

P.S. sorry for the lost Samparfitt

Hi Lightning Rider
No, the steering wires are just fishing leader. Use brass tubing crimped to hold them to the clevis.
You are right, It is a bit difficult to show it retracted, but samparfitt's picture is pretty right on.
You know, I once heard of a proportional retract servo, but I will be darned if I can remember who makes it..Mind is going with hair!!
I THINK and I am using the word THINK is was airtronics, but CALL them and they are on sale at http://www.airtronics.net/servo_sale.htm
Good Luck,
Twinman
PS On the servo, let us know.
