Rebuild (cont).
Went flying all day so not much done on the P-38.
pic 1: Covered the sheeted left side of the center wing with silver monocote (won't be seen anyway) and drilled and glued new 1/4" dowels in the center wing and put everything together for alignment. Hey, she's starting to look like a P-38 again (scary!).

Rebuild (cont)
pic 1: Up again early to get some work on the P-38 before going out flying (going to be 90 today). Ran the black plastic control rods in and reconnected the control rods. It would have been easier to put those in before gluing the back fin on.
pic 2: Glued the 2nd rib in and reinforcing the outer wing where the new rib will be glued on. I want to make sure I have lots of surface area so that outer rib has something to 'stick' to. Also, made a template and cut out a new ply former for one of the booms that was damaged.
pic 3: New ply former glued in.

Rebuild (cont)
pic 1: I put epoxy on the new outside rib and the wing and put everything together with the center wing to insure all is straight. I used Seran wrap to make sure the two parts aren't glued together. (that silver monocote looks nasty but it'll be covered by the boom).
pic 2: new end rib.
Well, about time to get together for breakfast with a bunch of other retired pilots, eat and then go fly. Life is good: my 4th day in a row flying.

Sam, looks like you managed to put it all together just fine. Mine is almost done, it should be ready for maiden this coming week.
I have seen a post somewhere that someone found the exact Olive Drab paint that matches our VQ cover, I can't seem to find that post again. Do you know where I can find it? I went to LHS but none matches the color.

Lightning rider I just bought some monokote (topq0510) OD and it sure matches the color very close. It'll be hard to tell there was a repair looking at the plane from 5'. Mine was in the sun for 3 seasons so it may have faded some so you may not get the same results. The kit had some 6X9" sheets that I also used. The sheets are just 'peel and stick': works good. These are especially useful for the bottom since I do not know of any iron on covering that will match that 'egg shell' blue/green. You have to watch while using the iron to put the monokote on: the original covering doesn't like high heat. Those white spots are where my iron went past the monokote and touched the original covering.

I plan on buying/building this plane soon and I was wondering if there is a way to print out the entire forum without going page by page, as in the "Printable Version" link at the top of the page. There are a couple of other forums that I would like to print out also that are close to 3000 replies and it would take forever to print on a page by page basis.

I mounted the two YS63 today and while mocking them up I noticed that the cross mark on the right boom's fire wall is placed in different position compare to the left's. Is this what the proper thrust line for twins?

pic 1: Got all the wires connected and checked out for all the moving surfaces, so I put the center wing, booms and horizontal stab together. If you notice, I have two wires coming out the end of the center wing. Besides the aileron, I've added a 'Y' extension to the inside flap servo and may convert the outside wing flap to its own servo. This will eliminate hooking up the ball socket. (If I don't hook up the extra servo, I can always just leave the wire there) I feel like it's all 'down hill' now!

pic 1: I painted the nose with Model Master 'acryl': US Army Helo Drab, 7561134031, and Duck egg blue, 7561104748. I don't think you'll get a closer match!

Well, I was going to go fly today but it looks like an 'all day' rain. Might as well work on a plane!
pic 1: One of the OS .91 2-strokes had dirt in the carb so it was time to take 'em apart and clean 'em up. A good 'ol 10 buck crockpot and green antifreeze works great on engines (and no hard work involved!). I keep the 'pot' outside as the heated antifreeze creates some nasty vapors.
pic 2: Eight hours later and I can use Mothers mag and aluminum polish (red jar in pic) on the internal parts.
pic 3: All together again and, amazingly, no left over parts!
pic 4: This morning, I hooked up the receiver, that's in the fuse, to the rest of the plane. I also connected and tested the air system and then screwed the bottom half of the fuse onto the rest of the plane. I also put the rebuilt engine back on.
This afternoon, I'll work on the other engine.

Thanks for the complements but I really don't do anything that the average modeler doesn't do. The real credit is to those that build from kits and plans.

pic 2: after. I guess she'll fly again. I still have several more hours to get her ready but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
