Craig, it's worth a shot! I tried using hitch pins, a.k.a. RC car body clips running through the brass and carbon fiber but some people didn't think that it was a good idea. I did otherwise I wouldn't have done it. I did end up by using 2-56 bolts instead, Running Allen screws can crush the carbon fiber though as I tried that out on my Hammerhead .12 'rigger.

In theory, a well positioned notch will be no different than a hole straight through. With a notch, only a small amount of pressure will be used when tightening the setscrew so crushing the carbon rod should not be a problem. We will see.... It's an easy fix if it does not work.

The reason for looking at something different was the ability to make toe adjustments on the same boom tubes. With a notch, I can rotate the boom tube 180 degrees and add another notch and not weaken the tube as much as I would with 2 holes drilled straight through within 1/8" of each other. Also easier filing a notch at the pond than drilling very small holes into small round tubes. I use the drill press for that which is kinda hard taking to the pond....

Good discussion!

Advanced Builder will have video for you this spring.

Mike that's a cool looking cover. The pipe, don't use the China pipe. If that is a HOR pipe. You got a-lot of volume. The Pro boat pipe is a good choice. Glen has a Texan pipe also ,you gotta ask http://www.novarossi.us/
PS nice looking build ,what you got under the cover?
LOOK at the length of the .12 18 size http://www.salisburypowerpipes.com/marine.htm

That picture above was an old one. I'm getting prepped for the Hobart Indy Masters Clock Tower race in September but didn't like the idea of just taking only 2 boats there so I blew the dust off that one.
My biggest problem was with the Nova Rossi's carb, it's a PITA to tune. I dropped another engine in but that wasn't running right so the NR went back in but did some carb work to make it how I like it, i.e., no remote needle. The engine fired right up tonight with no issues. Off to the lake this week to get it wet as for as long as I've had it, it never saw water. I'm not going for balls-out speed but just want to finish heats as that's all it took last year. Things might be tougher this time aorund as Gary Preusse has entered his own creation, a mini Dumas Hawk. I've seen that pupppy run high 70's at the Flint record trials! All of boats are fast but he rarely finishes 6 laps.

my .12 is setting getting dusty. Ron
I got it out early in the season. Now she sets. The 12-18 class never took off over here. I kinda like the .45 at the moment. Drives like a dream. I will run her in open rigger. I added a larger fuel tank so I can Finnish a heat. It's still not as fast as a .67 rigger. But I have fun.

Thanks to Joe, Rod and some of the other JAE team, at the Hobart race last year there was a Size Matters class. It requires one .12 outrigger teamed up with other other sized 'rigger and whatever team or persons who get the most points gets the trophy for a year. It's a fantastic idea to get interest in the .12's and show others that they aren't just little toy boats but some that can really haul and be inexpensive at the same time. I've been messing around with .12's for around 14 years now and have had a blast with them.

Hey,

I have a JAE 12 rigger and I am searching for a engine for it.
I heared, that most are running a Daynamite Platinum 18 in that boat.
And because I`m from germany I wanted to ask you what engine and pipes do you use because it is very difficult to find the engines in germany (especially the pipes).
I think its because of we are not running so much nitro (is much to expensive so we are not using more than 20 or 25% most times only 15%!).
And so the pipes you can buy here havent got so much volume.
I thougth about to use a novarossi T12LT5-M because I had seen one in a Jae-video on youtube but with a mac 21 pipe!? and much nitro (about 60% that is much to expensive in germany).

So now I think I could use a Dynamite .18 (cheaper and I think maybe more power with less nitro) but does it make sense wihth only about 20% nitro?
And wich pipe could I use? (were to buy?)

best regards
Christian

We run the .12 Nova Rossi ,some are using buggy engines as you don't need water lines to the head. My 12 NR had a finned head or a airplane head No water needed The engine runs better hot. I have a Go 18 inside my hull at the moment. We ran my buddies .18 engine and it likes water lines. restricted. That was in the heat of the summer. If you do run a buggy engine cut some of the fins off. kinda top heavy. I have moved on to the bigger stuff .45-.67 rigger hulls. Some are adding a .67 to the .45 short kit. Here the problem is in fuel. I had to add a bigger fuel tank to the .45 kit just to finish a race. That's a 45 CMB purple head in the pic, Notice the screw on the right sponson as the brass wanted to pull out of the sponson. the left side of the boom have 2 clamps to hold that from sliding ,the trun-fin is bolted all the way threw the sponson.

Ok thats very interesting.
Wich Nova are you running exactly?
This is the homepage from my distributor: http://www.novarossi-deutschland.de/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=7&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=79
There is a 3 and a 5 port engine of course the 5 port is the one with most power.
But what pipe would you recommend for the nova on "lower"  nitro? (in germany 25% nitro is very much)

And if have got some questions to the buggy engines...
What do you think light hull: Nova 12  and massvie hull (high weight): 18 buggy engine?

All of you have these realy nice short pipes were are you buying them?
In germany you could only get those long pipes for boats or standart pipes for cars...

Christian

the smaller the engine the larger the nitro. You will need to ask for the headbutton /airplane head -fin-ed . Some are using small pipes - buggy pipes will work

Hey guys
My .12 came alive this year after the worlds longest break-in, it suprised me how fast it is. I'm running the 5 port from Glenn with the air cooled head and his Texan pipe. Only thing is with the needle I'm using from Glenn it seems a little coarse. I have to be exactly on the "click" before it will go, and if the weather changes during the day I lose it.
What are you guys using?

I swapped out the remote needle for one from a .21 carb, a bolt-on as I never really liked the remote one myself. It was used on an unmodded carb.

This needle fits into the .12 NR carb. screw out the fitting and install. the needle comes with the base.
I seen them just run the head button.

That is a JAE 12G3 hull. I see two obvious clues in Mike's picture above.
If anyone can tell me what those two are, I will send them a free 12G epoxy glass cowling...

Mike Walker is not eligible. He builds far too many of these...

Joe

Joe, Could it be the front half of the sponson bottom is one piece not two piece at different angles and looks like rear Boom tube is lower going thru the hull or maybe the bulkhead tabs look smaller/thinner ???
