jikkuria -> car choices... (8/24/2009 10:37 PM)

well, i just turned 17, and in about a years time i will get a check for $3500 from my insurance company. im getting this because when i was younger, a family friend accidently cut off the end of one of my fingers in the tailgate of his truck. with the money i have and money i can acquire, i will have up to maybe $5000 to spend on a car. i know that's only 1500 more than the check , but i don't like borrowing money. for those of you who know import style cars, i was wanting some opinions.

lexus sc400/300

nissan 240sx s13/14

nissan 300zx turbo or non

toyota mr2 mk1

mazda rx7 fc

now for some american trucks[:D]

mid 90's turbo diesel silverado

s10 w/ a sbc

i know it's alot of cars, but their the ones i like that i can find for the right price, and and all help is appreciated

Maybe find out about the insurance cost for each of them? That might help you determine which one to get as well!

SLAYERDUDE -> RE: car choices... (8/24/2009 11:16 PM)

+1^
You'd be surprised how the price of insurance can differ from vehicle to vehicle.
I almost got a '99 Dodge Ram 1500 PU until I checked the ins.
Insurance was nearly the cost of the monthly truck payment.

I'm very glad I didn't sign any papers that night, the salesman wanted me to drive off the lot with it and I told him no way until I check insurance rates.
He insisted I take the truck home (it was a very nice truck and price) but I told him the only thing I was leaving the lot in was the one I drove in with...I just left in my crappy Geo Storm. :P

Anyway I like the S10 SBC idea but as a 17 yr old kid that might not be the best pick.
But if you do get that just don't tell the ins company it's got a small block in there! [X(]

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/24/2009 11:18 PM)

it isn't my first experience w/ high power cars, i have driven my uncle's drag nova. i never took it down he track, but w/ 750 horses it had no issue breaking loose at any moment. i like the import style cars, as i like motors that get high revs [:D]

Lunchboxer -> RE: car choices... (8/24/2009 11:24 PM)

Also, if it is your only car, make sure that you consider the reliability as well... !

DarkFire989 -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 12:38 AM)

If you like high reving engines, get a 2000 Civic SI. Quick, great reliability, and probably good insurance. VTECH![:D]

AutoXMan -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 12:45 AM)

Skip the RX7 if it's your daily driver, not the best if it needs to be repaired and it will.

And car insurance will kill you for a 17 year old driver. Maybe 3k a year?

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 1:00 AM)

it's not too bad actually, im on my moms insurance now, as i dont have a car. but we figgured out it would be cheaper for me to get my own car and insurance, wierd huh? the thing that worried me about the rx7 is the motor, just because they often need maintenance as their rotary motors. right now im leaning towards the sc300/400, only because they have very sturdy blocks. it's a pain to put a 5 speed in one, but if i got a sc, i would eventually.

annie_himself -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 1:07 AM)

Lexus SC300 most deff. The 400 would kill you on insurance prices.

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 1:20 AM)

yea, i've been seeing them cheap lately too. i know roughly what is involved in the 5 speed swap. any one have any specifics?

Lunchboxer -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 1:22 AM)

2JZ-GTE + 6-speed swap!!!! [:D]

most of these cars u listed are all sport cars and you being 18 the insurance will be sky high, my cousin has a 300zx that he is gonna give to me but my dad doesnt want him too because insurance will be too much.

Definitely. Do that. Are you thinking about the Soarer or post-2005 models?

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 2:21 AM)

soarer, only way to roll if your going for something along those lines.

AutoXMan -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 3:21 AM)

That and anything newer is a heck of a lot more than 5k dollars.

there are a few sc400's around here for less than 3, and 300's for the same.

Sugafree -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 4:07 AM)

Check out some Volvo`s....Most are Full Load & Turbo......And there about as Tough & Long lasting a car that you can find these days......

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 4:33 AM)

i have looked at a fe volvos, and i like some of the older 740's. but when i ,made the list it had escaped my mind.

annie_himself -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 4:43 AM)

VW MKIV!!! Jetta love man...

jikkuria -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 4:45 AM)

their kinda cool, but not quite my style.

annie_himself -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 5:06 AM)

I happen to like sedans over coupe's. Easier on insurance too being 18 and all. Look for a SC300. I wouldn't recommend a SC400.

traxxaspede -> RE: car choices... (8/25/2009 6:19 AM)

Just to throw this in, as a general rule...

Old cars = cheaper, less reliable, easier and a lot cheaper to repair yourself, but parts are harder to come by

New cars = more expensive, more reliable, harder to work on yourself and a lot more expensive to have someone do the work for you, but parts are more readily available.
