Yes, its probably a very good engine. I have a 4500 mah battery for it so I should be set. I will put hardwood blocks on the firewall or mount it with some standoffs or something maybe with foam under each end and an air gap in the middle. The box should come with ears or mounting tabs and a hole for a screw so you can mount it using standoffs.

Be sure to trial fit the ignition module with the engine mounted before you use standoffs as there is precious little room between the module and the fuel inlet on the carb. I don't see how you could do it actually. Maybe if the ignition was moved as far outboard as possible.

I was thinking of mounting my EI behind the firewall around the fuel tank but since fabmaster911 has posted that the plane is tail heavy with his setup I may wait. Once I get the engine and everything else installed I'll have a better Idea of what the CG will look like.

Leedless..

What about instead of a stand off cutting a rectangle out of the firewall behind ignition to expose it to cool air? Bad idea..weaken firewall? Maybe 2-3 round holes for some cooling air then no standoff needed. Or else locate it elsewhere on the firewall where there is more room, what about down lower or on the other side muffler side.

Not sure if this info will help, but I have an original H9 Taylorcraft with a G26 and the C&H Ignition. When I spoke to C&H, they suggested that I mount the ignition on some foam and hold it in place with rubber bands for dampening. My ignition is mounted below the motor on the firewall. I screwed in (4) hideous little hooks from the hardware store and then stretched the rubber bands in between the hooks to hold the module over a 1/2" piece of foam. Ignition battery is in the very nose of the plane and the ignition switch is just behind the cowl. This placement kept the ignition as far from the other electronics as possible. Balance wasn't an issue for me, but I realize the new Tcraft is not the exact same size.

The new one sure looks good.

Scooter and some of the guys with more experience with gas engines can probably advise better but I would think some small round holes behind the ignition would not weaken the firewall too much and might help it stay cooler.

Mounting on the muffler side may put too much heat in one area as the muffler will get pretty hot. Mounting it below may get in the way of fuel lines. There's not a lot of good mounting alternatives on this firewall.

I am going to leave it mounted per the H9 setup as they aren't in the habit of giving bad setups.

I've fitted many a canopy in my day but this one is a little challenging due to the fact that it DOESN'T #!$%#@ FIT VERY GOOD.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I'll get back to work on it

Amen! Thats the only thing I have left to do on mine. I might just screw it down. However I do have SMOKE! She weighs 15 lbs. 9 oz complete. I hope this engine will give me what I want.

I'm going to drill a small hole and put a rubber grommet in it then run a small control rod through it. Strictly manual here. I already made her heavy enough by adding smoke. It will be worth it though

It's ready to fly in 3 nights of work.

Photo descriptions:

The pilot is missing one important thing. A control stick! Made one from aluminum tubing and some shrink tube for a hand grip.

My choke is actuated by a wheel collar and a long 6-32 bolt. It can be reached through the air inlet in the cowl. I cut one blocking plate a little smaller than the other.

That opening can also be used for the fuel filler tube access. It's braced to the engine with a piece of wire.

Please excuse the "snow" on the carb.

fabmaster911,

Is there not enough room to reach through the front of the cowl and operate the choke manually??? Are you waiting for the weekend to maden your Taylorcraft? Still waiting on my engine .

pettit,

Looks like a nice setup on the choke and fuel filler. Dude, you gotta get that left arm down on the boy. Looks like he's at the rodeo riding a bull .

There's gonna be a throttle quadrant on the left side of the cockpit.

I knew you had something in mind. Just janken your chain a little since I have no engine yet and nothing more to do on the plane .

One more hint to those of you using the Zenoah G-20 engine. Take the choke plate out of the carb and solder the hole shut. Otherwise it will not pull much fuel at all.

BTW, my CH ignition upgrade arrives in a few days and their new one has adjustable timing.

Pettit...nice work. I am not sure but I think the original Tcraft had actual steering wheels. A guy at the club just told me that Sunday. Anyway, a little story. My Dad built a 1/4 scale Taylorcraft with 100+ wingspan from plans (not a kit) in 1969-1970. It is all balsa, with silk and Dope finish and its beautiful. He used to have a hobby shop back then. He made it with all the details steering wheels, upholstered seat, steps at the doors, and it even had a trap door in the bottom for dropping out a guy with a parachute. He had a banner on it and flew low and picked up the banner sometimes with a grapple hook. You couldnt get 1/4 scale stuff back then so the pilot is a barbie doll.

He flew this unit at the 1970 1971 AMA Nationals which I think may have been in New Jersey. He had a trophy so I am pretty sure he won in whatever class he was in. Anyway, my brother flew this plane on Sunday....40 Years Later!!! He removed the original Super Tiger 71 and put a 100 engine in now. It flies great and is a classic and is still mint. Some guys at the club said we should send in the story and picture to the Model Aviation, maybe we will. Dad passed away but the plane flies again!

Pettit, how much for the C&H ignition? Why did you mount the Zenoah box if you are getting the CH?

That's definitely a story the AMA would like to hear. The Taylorcraft is the best looking of that group (Cub, Aeronca, Cessna) from the 1940's. Pics?

It's pretty tight once you install the baffles.

That must be makin' you crazy waiting on the engine.

Dick,

Thanks for the pictures. It looks like you used some screws to keep the ill fitting canopy in place?

Yep, a few screws hold it in place.

I'm checking on the control stick thing now, but the full scale T-Craft I flew in had side-by-side seating with a pair of sticks.

I am doing a review on both the T-Craft and the engine, so I had to use the Zenoah ignition.

But once those are complete, I will be doing some user testing on the CH ignition with adjustable timing.

It'll replace the Zenoah unit.

Price is about $100.00 or so.

This note is from my friend, neighbor and former full scale aerobatic pilot, Wayne Parrish:

The original factory T-Crafts had yokes. The clipped versions had sticks.

So the conversions had a center mounted stick and was actually flown from the center,as was my Swick/Cole conversion.

You could slip over and fly from the sides.

I don't remember a factory T having sticks,unless the latest"NEW" version did.

Wayne

Pettit....can you elaborate some more on the choke plate removal comment above?

Why needed, how much restrictive it will be etc. I haven't heard this one before. Also, stock exhaust you using with the G20 I presume. Are you concerned this won't be enough power and this will give the motor more HP by allowing more air and fuel through the carb? This doesnt sound like a reversible change, so I want to make sure before I do it.
