Just take out the plate, solder the hole in the plate closed and replace the plate.

The hole lets in too much air when you are trying to choke the engine and prime it.

It was used on things like chain saws and weed eaters so the user would not over-prime and flood the engine.

It's like sticking your thumb into the intake to prime it.

Which in this case may work just as well!

Pettit....can you elaborate some more on the choke plate removal comment above?

Why needed, how much restrictive it will be etc. I haven't heard this one before. Also, stock exhaust you using with the G20 I presume. Are you concerned this won't be enough power and this will give the motor more HP by allowing more air and fuel through the carb? This doesnt sound like a reversible change, so I want to make sure before I do it.

gade600sdi,

What pettit is talking about is the hole in the choke plate only. Has nothing to do with the way the engine runs. When you can not get to your carb because of the cowl they can sometimes be a little harder to start than you would like. By plugging off the hole in the choke plate you allow the engine to draw more fuel than air and it will start a lot better. Once the engine has started and the choke is off your working with the butterfly inside the carb. I do this even with the carbs that are exposed. Makes for easy starting.

The guys over in the gas engines forum endorse the thumb method. They don't even use the choke itself, they just stick their thumb over the carb intake to prime it.

I'm on the cusp of being finished building this Taylorcraft.

Happily, my $56 2 1/4" TruTurn spinner arrived in the big brown truck today. It was custom cut to accommodate the Zoar 16 x 6 prop and the Zenoah G20 prop shaft.

As usual, IT DOESN'T FIT.

No combination of the adapter, washers and prop nuts will result in this spinner fitting the Zenoah G20 with a Zoar 16 x 6.

The last TruTurn spinner I bought was spec'd for my Extra 260 with a Zoar 15 x 4 on a Saito 82, it didn't fit either and the TruTurn tech guy told me I had to cut down the prop to get it to work. What a p.i.t.a.

I'm now waiting for the TruTurn tech guy to call me back. Maybe he'll tell me I have to bend the prop shaft at an angle or something real easy like that.

Well that sucks. I had a 2 1/2" Tru Turn in the package so I spent a couple of hours last night cutting it up and fortunately it turned out good. I am please especially since it's a 18X6 Biela running through there.

I bought the 2-1/2" Tru Turn Standard 120 Spinner. I knew it wouldn't fit, just less I have to cut out. I have a cone shapped stone I chuck up in my drill that always does a great job.

Try cutting about a half an inch off the engine (G-20 in my case) prop shaft.

My TT 2.5" fits 16-6 APC, 17-6 APC and a few more.

I had the same problem with a True Turn product. Bought a custom cut, $50.00 product specifically set up for my Evolution 35cc. Didn't work. Had to fit spacers behind the prop to work. Paid for extra labor and parts. I'd say we have a pattern here.....

Be advised that if you re-plumb the stock tank with Tygon tubing and secure it with the tie wrap as described in the manual, it will probably fall off, resulting in less-than-adequate engine performance.

I opened my tank up, removed the clunk tube from the bottom of the tank and wrapped a few turns of bare copper wire around the tube. The wire was soldered and smoothed out and the Tygon holds securely now, and better after another tie wrap was added.

I tried the DuBro fuel tank barbs but the smaller one was too large for the metric brass tubing in the tank.

Yep. They have to know of these issues up front. At these prices, they need to at least advise their customers. I'm done dealing with the folks at TruTurn.

LOL " it will probably fall off, resulting in less-than-adequate engine performance".

Dick, what size Tygon tubing are you using? I think I have the 3/32 i.d. and it was a very tight fit. I agree the cable tie seemed a little inadequate.

Yes, it's tight at first but once a little gas and oil gets between it and the brass tube it gets as slick as a peeled onion!

I always use small plastic ties in the fuel tank and everywhere else. I have yet to have any of them fall off. Maybe I've been luck over the years. Once you get the ties hand tight I use a pair of pliers and a screw driver and really snug them down.

Zippi I am in the same boat as you waiting for G20 engine to come Monday or Tuesday. I scrapped the G26 I could have used it but too much modifying. If the G20 isnt enough power I will change it to something else later.

Also, I used 3/32 dubro tygon and zip tied it very tight. I doubt very much it could come off the Tygon went on very tight if someone would use 1/8 inch I could see that a problem but the small line I am using I expect no issue. Watch out for one thing the klunk they give you if you use the H9 clunk I would wrap it as Pettit says above with the wire look carefully at the nipple on the klunk it looks like its made to pop off. I switched my clunk with a better one I had that had good barbs on it and a fater nipple it maybe was a sullivan or dubro one I put on.

gade600sdi,

I use the Tygon 3/32" line as well. My clunk looked fine and I used it. I had an extra one that I used for my third line. Most of the time when I refuel the stopper in my fuel dot is very hard to get out even after 2 seasons. Sorry you couldn't get the G26 to work out.

OK, we should all be flying by next weekend eh..not much work left on mine except the motor...oh and it was mentioned above the canopy fits like crap. I didnt spend much time on it but it looks like they used a mold for a bigger plane then they downsized the plane slightly for production and used the same slightly bigger canopy mold. I have no idea how to make that nice I didnt wast too much time on it yet but I can see it coming a big waste of time and a lot of swearing.

What about the fuel tank rubber stopper? No mention in the manual is it gas and glow compliant? Are all H9 stoppers gas compatible? They never talk about it but Dubro has different rubber for glow and gas.

Jeez. You guys are really overcomplicating this! LOL I'm not flaming or criticizing anybody, but
I'm going w/ the OS 120AX, OS Metal Mount, ply spacer if necessary and Slimline Pitts-Style muffler. I anticapate that engine mounting'll take me, oh maybe 30 minutes, 'cause I don't think I'll be able to use the premarked mounting holes. If I want to go w/ a TruTurn spinner, I'll order one and I know it'll all fit as I've used this combo before on another airplane and everyhting matched up just fine. But I may just go w/ a white plastic spinner. Not sure yet but $10 or so for the plastic one sure beats the ~$60 TruTurn price w/ adapter kit and all. In any event, mount the engine, use the tank, tubes and stopper w/ the kit and take it to the field, fuel it, start it up, minimal adjustment to the needles and fly. It's just me, I guess, but I prefer the path of least resistance.
Anyway, I'm just kidding about the "overcomplicating" part. Good luck to you all on your maidens. I'm about two weeks away....
Al

Here's what you need to do to get a good result with the canopy. It is still a p.i.t.a but it will look good.

After doing lots of trial fitting, trim some of the material away on the curved front of the scale gas filler at the front of the windshield after having put a piece of tape where your cowl ends.

Get some #2 x 1/4" wood screws and mount the canopy. Using a pin vise, drill little pilot holes for them, run the screws in an out, put some thin CA in to harden the threads. I started with rearward bottom corners on both sides after finding a decent fit for the canopy. You will not be able to get the top to lay completely flat but you can get close.

Then put in the screws at the top rearward side. Work your way around and put a couple on the front etc. I used a total of 8 screws.

Then I removed the screws and canopy, laid a bead of canopy glue (a must have) along the top and sides on the fuse. Then put the glue on the lower inside of the canopy itself. Carefully fit it and put the screws back in the original order. Do a little clean up with wet cloth, go to bed, in the morning you will have a secure good looking canopy installation.

Some swearing still seems to help.

Here's a picture of my installed canopy. I could only find brass screws, steel would be better.

Al...you make a lot of good points. If you arent a veteran "gasser" its a royal P.I.T.A. changing fuel lines, different ignitions, batteries, weight, making standoffs etc. and the extra cost of gas motor up front. I have an 120AX NIB and I was strongly thinking about using for those reasons you mention. I guess the sound and the gas motor and you can fly all day on a tank is enticing though. I love all my glow motors but getting up to 120 size with the tank thats in there 17 oz you wont have more than 10 mins. flying time and you will be empty a guy I fly with had a Funtana 100 with the AX120 and 17 oz same tank 8 minutes he was dry!!! Thats like 7 flights to a gallon of $20 glow fuel vs like $2 for the gasser. I guess if you fly with it alot you can spend perhaps $100-200 easy in a summer more on fuel. but you do make some good points.

mobyal,

You make a fine point about over complication. Believe me, there are many days when I come to the conclusion that all my 4 stroke glow engine airplanes, and now a 2 stroke gas engine airplane are just designed to keep me from flying.

When I get worn out from the hassle they can be, I reach for my OS 46 powered sport plane and just go have fun. I did that just this morning. No muss, no fuss, big smiles.

I wish I would have gone this morning. Instead at around 11:00 last night I decided to do a power build on a Ultra Stick 40 with a YS AR61 two stroke with a pipe. We have a big event a the field tomorrow and I'm shooting to get it done by then. I think Murphy moved in though because the wing saddle is way off so I have to shim the wing, the alignment pins in the wing are off and the dang horizontal mounting surface is off by about 7 degrees. I just love this hobby
