BENDER, let me say first your a more capable pilot then I'll ever be. I watched that whole race with you and the kid and an exciting race it was. That particular lap there is not a snowballs chance in you know where that you went around the pylon. You were out wide and whipped it hard back the other way. My eyes were on your plane and all I saw was it explode. Its highly probable that on you down leg stretch going back to the other side you and gun met with your momentum carrying debris that way. Its also possible I'm wrong. Just saying what I Saw. Either way its racing and at those high speeds in Gold stuff happens fast and that's why its so fun to watch. Please don't make me your whipping boy though I enjoy watching you and the others duke it out. -Todd

Chris,

I don't think anyone got it fully on video, but it was impressive. I am not going to wade into who's fault it was (even more so as I am not sure which plane was which). It was a great race, thanks to all the guys at Sac.

It looks like I may have a silver plane for the tango next month so I will be coming back and be after some points this time, not just breaking out every heat.

Let me make this clear, I was not looking for video of the mid-air. Tommy always posts great video after each of the races. That's what I wanted to see. Bad timing on my part there boys.

It sounds like you guys had a great race. I'd like to see video of the Gold Final if it is available.

Too bad on the break outs there James. What were you flying?

Chris

WOW, what a season! This being my first year of racing I really didn't know what to expect. I really surprised myself with how well I actually did. Congratulations to George for taking first in points for the year. There was alot of tough competition. Thanks to Teddy Bear for the kind words in his post. I got alot of help from alot of people this year. Kimmy (my biggest fan), Ollie (my caller), Todd, Sergio, Kimo, Jim, Tommy, Steve, both Jerry's JV and JC, and the list goes on and on! I learned alot from all you guys! I was thinking about going to silver next year but I think I got some unfinished buisness in bronze. I'm bringing the war in warbirds next year. All you bronze guys better watch out!

I gota say, that was the most amazing race I think Ive ever witnessed. That ME 109 and the Precious Metal were going at it hard and I was expecting like most that they just might tag each other, but no way did I expect a head- on!

It sounds like you fellas had a good time out there! Seriously, a head-on collision? That had to be really AWESOME! Unless, of course, it was one of your planes.

Sorry Todd, diden't mean to come off like that. I'm just sayin... I watched Tommy run many Gold heats throughout the weekend and even as awesome a pilot as he is he over rotates that gold plane almost every turn and then rotates back. My plane was 30ft west of the southbound lane. Tom was out there with us when we picked it all up, He knows. No biggie!!! I have lots more planes comming for next year and I won't let one CRAPPY weekend destroy it. To tell you the truth, I'll never be really happy till they Man up and lower the breakout a little. To say: 1:25 or so. Congrats to all of the champs! Lots of hard work and you all deserve it believe me I know.

What's the biggest engine I can run in a Hangar 9 150 to participate in the race?

How about a Hangar 9 60?

Hey Dave:

I am interested in getting one of those 109s. Is that the one that Jason was going to kit out? If there is a chance in the future of getting one, let me know. I would love to get one for a silver entry at some time in the future.

How about a Hangar 9 60?

The engine size is based upon wing area. There is a chart for 2 cycle and for 4 cycle motors.

The Hanger 9 150 looks to have over 1000 Square inches. If so you would be able to use the max engine which would be either a 1.20 two stroke or a 2.40 four stroke. You can find the rules at the SAM website...... http://www.sacramento-rc-flyers.org/comingevents.html

In fact the Hanger 9 60 size could use the same motors.

That bird would be one of the largest I've seen out there. Most guys are running 40 size planes and some have used 60 size.

Dave,
I say this with tons of respect for you and without the desire to cause issue. You and the Shaw boy were really moving, one of the most intense races I have seen in years. From where I was watching it looked as if Shaw turned around the pin (he was just ahead of you by inches) and you went wide north and east and sliced the pylon headed south and west (had that not been the case I believe there would of been a mid-air between you and Shaw since you two looked to be at the same altitude) as you headed South West there was a meeting of the two planes (yours and T-gun's). When they hit T-gun's plane made a sharp left (west) turn right after impact and proceeded to it's resting place, while your debris continued in it's south west direction carried by momentum or your superior speed. I believe your flight path was the only way to avoid hitting the plane of Shaw - which is a testament of how good a pilot you are, the only problem is that it then put your plane in the same air space as Tommy.

Given the fact that a second difference in position by either plane and the mid-air would of been just a cheer of whoa from the croud vs. the silence of two motors being thrown to the ground. With that said it's too bad there wasn't video, if there was it might help to determine what happened in the seconds prior to the mid-air. All in all it was unfortunate that the "accident" happened. Two planes were lost and it was harsh for all involved.

I would also add that you had one of the toughest week ends I have ever witnessed. I hope next year brings you better luck.

Did anyone hear any info about the new YS engines and specifically when they might be available?

How much longer do we have to wait till demand and their new price converge...I'm a little worried

I spoke with Central Hobbies yesterday and he said from what he has heard, they haven't started making them yet. He estimates December. I haven't had a chance to talk to Richard Veranno yet. He may know more.

In retrospect after a 2 day cooling period I will close the entire topic of "Poor Sullivans mid-air" by simply saying "I had a crappy weekend!"
Jake: Yes the 109 will be made availble by Jason V. I have 2 in the oven right now. However they will be a little larger to accept the new 115. I plan to return with a lower ET plane to assure wider turning and elimate cutting all together. Embarsing for me and also tired of zeros.

Take care guys,

Planebender

Are you guys planning to alter your chart or does the 1.15 have to run as a 1.20?

Thanks, Terry

Here are some pics from the weekend.
I didn't get as much use from my camera as I was a bit busy in two classes.
Caution, some of the images in these links may be a bit scary to wimmen and small childrens.
I think you'll see what I mean.

There may be hope for you yet TB.

Huh, another closet Butcher Bird fan.

Here's a couple shots for you to pin up on your wall of wishes.

P.S. I got a 1:30.50 something for ten laps in testing last Saturday.

What company makes that FW190.

Was that always on your chart or has it been added because of the new YS?

Our chart goes right from a 1.10 to the 1.20.

Thanks, Terry

Unless I'm reading it wrong, even with with fudge factor, the 115 needs a 550 square inch wing, same as the 120.

RCPRO has the same limitations. We are talking about massaging the chart for next season. Not sure yet if it will happen. Evidently Planebender is doing a little modern math or perhaps the answer to my question is that the chart has been changed.
