I have a new zdz 160 b2 on a composite arf 40% extra. It has a 50cc fuel tank, plumbed with 1 line vented and 1 line thru a T (dot for filling) and straight to the engine. The tank is located below the spar and centered. No extra fuel line although it shouldn't make a difference. I'm using heavy tygon tubing. The high and low needles are set at 2 turns out which the manual calls for. The screw on the butterfly is toward the engine caseing. Go to start the engine, flip it over several (at least 5-6) times with choke on until it burps. Turn choke off, flip 2-3 more times, engine comes to life for 2-3 seconds then dies. Same thing over and over. I tried to richen the low speed needle as I thought it was starving for fuel. Same result. Thought that my fuel system was messed up so I ran a line from the carb straight to the fuel can. Same thing happened, burp, runs for 2-3 seconds then dies. I just bought the fuel from 7/11 and mixed with pensoil 2 cycle air cooled oil. I give, HELP!!!!!!!! Jon

These engines are fairly simple, assuming that the timing is set spot on - check it to make sure. You got spark or it wouldn't run at all, you may want to check the plugs, they burn out easy if the air flow is not sufficient to cool them. Has the engine run before or is this the first run ? Are there air bubbles in the pick up line ? My buddy had the same problem with hsi 80 twin - it was the plugs dying.

Thanks for the help. It's a brand new engine, no runs, no air bubles, the couple of seconds that it runs is very smooth, just dies like you turned the kill switch off. It doesn't run long enough to get hot........ Waiting on RCS to email me. I'm sure that it's in the carb. Since it's brand new hopefully I can send it back and RC showcase can find out what's wrong and get it back in good time :^) Jon

Hmmm, could be the carb not pumping then, and your just running on the amount that gets sucked up with the choke on, Here is something else to try, remove both plugs attach them to the ignition harness, remove the fuel line from the carb, tape the plugs so they ground out against the heads, In a darken room, turn on the ignition and using a starter, spin the engine, a portable drill on the center bolt will work also. The object of this is to keep spinning and observe the spark and see if it lasts for 5 sec or so, if it does, leave the plugs out, turn off the the ignition, hook up the fuel line and with the choke off, spin the engine and see if the fuel is being sucked by the carb. AN easy way to do this is to disconnect the fuel line from the tank end, but with it full so you can easily see if it gets sucked up the line. If it doesn't - then perhaps the pumnp diaphram is not doing its job - it can happen I guess, but those carbs are used in a zillion machines and I have not heard of one being DOA - but hey - this modeling and anything can happen! EIther way you can tell them at RCS what the results are and they may be able to zero in a little easier on the problem - anything you can do not to have to send in the engine and take wait is a good thing !

Try the above procedure, but grounding the plug against the head will do absolutely nothing. The ground is through the braiding. Set the low needle to 2 turns out to start. Keep me posted.

Alright, I pulled the plugs, turned the ignition on and hand rotated the prop for 2 minutes and the ignition fired great, tried again, ignition is working fine. I ran the fuel line to my gas can setting between the landing gear, reset the carb to 2 turns high and low speed and hand turned the prop for several minutes, choke on, choke off, no throttle, full throttle, No fuel is being drawn to the engine. Pull the carb. Be sure the pulse hole is not blocked and lined up properly with the phenolic block. Try a hard prime by putting your thumb over the choke plate hole to get initial fuel draw. Sometimes the carb will need help initially to draw fuel. You can dissasemble the carb and wet the pump diaphram and metering diaphram with raw fuel oil mix and reassemble.
Let me know.
Thanks,
Mike

I called RCS and spoke to Richard about the zdz. He suggested pulling the carb and checking the phenolic block. I pulled the engine and carb, checked where the vacume port was, looked at the gasket first thing....the gasket was reversed. Reinstalled the carb and engine, ran the fuel line back to the gas can, turned the engine over and.....fuel drew right up. Thanks everyone for helping, can't wait to get this thing in the air. Jon

I was looking back thru the zdz threads and came across this one that I posted back in 2003.... Thought that I'd give an update Ever since the minor problem at the beginning the zdz 160 champion has run great!!! I'm still running it in the comp arf 3m extra. I don't think that I've touched the carb needles since it was first adjusted. I'm running a menz 32x10 prop with regular mufflers. More than enough power for anything!!!! It did dead stick on me the other day but i didn't give it a couple of clicks on the idle trim when I took off...
