I keep reading how people building kits substitute this or that piece of sub-quality wood. How do you determine wheather a piece of wood is bad?

The reason I asked is because I am working on my second kit and have a few questionable pieces. I guess the piece of sheeting that is green and cracked is obviously bad. The one with the big knot in the middle is no good either. I also have a 1/2" plank to carve the cowling from. When sanding it, this one crumbles like styrofoam. I guess this one is bad as well. :

What other indications are there to detemine sub-quality wood???

Tom just use your own judgement. The more you build the better you can tell whats suitable. The pieces that you stated are questionable are the ones you want to replace. I've had 3/32 wing sheeting that was like the cowl block you described. It was too light and crumbled. Out it went.

Wood your going to use in the tail of your model usually needs to be lighter. Weigh it and flex it and feel for the stongest lightest pieces.

Wing sheeting should be easy to bend across the ribs. If its too stiff save that piece to use cross grain on fueslage bottom.

Balsa cut from the same tree can have different properties. Depending on how its cut in relation to the grain makes a difference. A grain or long grain lines is easiest to bend around corners. B grain or medium grain lines is a good all around wood.
C grain or short grain lines is the stiffest and is good for fuselage sides and slab type tail surfaces in smaller models.

I hope this helps
