I took some videos, just never got to post them yesterday... I'm uploading them now, and will have them up in a bit! I hate that Windows Movie Maker is so stupid in Windows 7...

Yeah I got the upgrade kit a while back... I seriously don't see any reason to buy it... The new header, pipe, aluminum parts, shocks, etc... It doesn't make the Tornado BB a better buggy. Again, I still have another stock Tornado, and it seems to be just great, and have less problems. It's a great starter buggy though, that's for sure.

I'm just trying to get my Hurricane XTR out more often. That thing is just a damn blast! Videos are on the way. (BTW, pretty boring runs, but you'll get the idea.)

Here's the videos... In the first video, everything is working great!!!

In the second video, the 2nd gear decided to stop working, and not initiate... So I'm at a loss. What could be the problem now?...

you might want to tune that a bit your getting Lean bogs when you break. means one of your needles are alittle lean. id richen your LSN a little bit. i would also lower your idle thats why the wheels want to go when you start it.

No, that's it trying to get into 2nd gear... It just bogs down when it wants to kick in that gear. I did richen the LSN, and it just delayed that a bit... My 2nd gear is just gone, and that's got me worried.

I looked under at the spur gears after these runs, and I can already see it wearing a bit. I'm concerned that these gears will be chewed up like the other ones in no time flat. I can't move the gap away or any closer, because it just doesn't move or feel right.

I believe by using that hex on the 2-speed clutch? I remember reading about that.

I just don't know why it would work, and then not work all of a sudden. I guess it's pretty common afterall.

I'm not sure as to which way I need to turn it, guess I should start reading up some old posts and looking at some videos!

yeah i cant help you in that area. i do know there is one hex screw that holds it tight to the shaft and the other screw is what you need to turn. i found that when mine wasnt shifting at all i turned the screw clockwise a bit till it shifted. see if your manual sais anything.

You're right. It's loosen to shift earlier, and tighten to shift later. I will try that out and see if anything happens...

As for the gear mesh, it's just off. I can't adjust it properly enough to get it better than it is now. It seems that the clutch bell isn't quite far enough to make the best contact. I don't think it has anything to do with it, but I can move my motor around by pulling and pushing on the cooling head. I think the hex's holding it to the motor mounts are just a tad loose. I think I'll have to remove the header going to the exhaust to reach those.

*sigh*

Hopefully it all works out. Thanks!

But how is it even possible to get it set correctly, if I can't even see the mesh itself? Even from below, on the side, through gaps, the actually meshing isn't visible...

I can only use the paper strip trick so much, but in this case it's not going to do jack for me...

Success! I actually just took the whole thing apart again, loosened the 2nd gear hex, and tried doing a few things to help out the gear mesh. 2nd gear was kicking in a little early, but at least it's kicking in, and running great too!

Just one bad thing, is I believe my steering servo just went haywire. I'm going to check the connections in the battery compartment to make sure it's not something else. It stuck open about 40% throttle and got away from me before getting stuck in some grass. Then I was able to steer it back around, and the throttle got stuck again and it stopped it with my foot!

Guess I'll check that out again. So far the spur gears look pretty good. I'll just keep an eye on things!

Make sure your servo wires are not crossing you antenna or battery pack wiring.

Well, definately not the connection. The servo just doesn't work anymore. I made sure the receiver wasn't the issue... I took everything apart and troubleshooted it the best I could... If a servo costs more than $25 I'm going to be pissed... I've already replaced enough parts on this thing! I have dumped more than $400 into this little bugger!!! Oh well. Hopefully my Hurricane XTR doesn't give me as many problems as the Tornado, otherwise there's no way I could buy another Redcat.

Well here's one way to see the gear mesh... Although I'll never want to take the tray out of there again! What a PITA.

lol yeah its a **** and dude dont stress its not just redcat. we all have problems. even my brand new hpi rs4 3 evo+ 3.0 3 weeks old has had its fair share. the first day i bought it i broke both axels, wrecked the rotostart, stripped out 2 tires, broke a shock. Its an expensive hobby and today i was doing WOT's and what do you know i stripped out my back tire again and stripped out my server saver.

The servos are not that much. The throttle servo is http://www.urchobby.com/proddetail.php?prod=02073 and the steering servo is http://www.urchobby.com/proddetail.php?prod=sp6001

LuD,

Quick way to check your servos/receiver - unplug both servos from the receiver and plug them into the other output - steering into throttle and throttle into steering. Now try your radio again. The steering should now be controlled by the throttle and throttle by steering. If the steering servo is bad, it still will not work, but the throttle servo will still work when plugged into the steering. If the steering servo works now with the outputs switched, the servo is not the issue.

If the steering servo will not work in either channel, I would also check the mechanics to be sure the steering is not somehow jammed. The easiest way to do that is to remove the servo horn from the servo so that it is completely disconnected from the mechanics. Normally, I would not say that a servo would go from fine to totally non functional all at once. Usually, that would only happen if a wire broke or something like that.

Also, from your photos, it definitely looks like your mesh is set too loose. That may be what made the spur gears strip before. You should look through the forums and watch a video about setting the mesh. Here is one that you can use. http://www.break.com/usercontent/2009/2/How-to-Check-and-Adjust-the-Mesh-on-an-RC-Nitro-Engine-673083.html You can also find links to other maintenance videos here. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=8340591

Good luck

I swapped the servo channels, and the steering worked by using the throttle... So that means my receiver is ok.

I tried going tighter on the mesh, but it kept jamming up... I will try it again before I get a servo to put back in there, so it's easier for me to actually see the mesh.

Thanks for the input BK!

If you swapped channels, and the steering servo works using the throttle, then the servo is OK. So either the receiver or transmitter is the issue I think. Do you have another transmitter you can try? As long as it is the same type (am or fm) and the same frequency (27 MHz for example), you can out the crystal in it from your normal transmitter and try it.

I hear you about being too tight with the gear mesh. It is certainly a fine line between too loose, too tight and just right. But with some patience, you can get it.

Bryan

Well if I swapped the throttle and steering servo's on the receiver, and the throttle works the steering, but then the steering doesn't work the throttle, that would mean the servo is bad, right?... I have tons of receivers and transmitters. I will quickly try another crystal set / transmitter just in case!!
