Yea Bruce/Hawk long over due for a maiden, they just don't look good sitting on the ground so much better in the air. Glad to hear that may soon be happening. Can't wait to see you maiden it.

Actually if you see in the Video of the ASP break in it took 13 minute 27 seconds if I remember correctly, to go through a 16 oz tank of 10% nitro at wide open throttle, really not that bad at all for a 5 cylinder radial. In comparison, I can only get about 11 minutes WOT with a 20oz tank on my YS 120AC (single cylendr four stroke) in the P40 and that really needs 30% to run well. The 4 ASPs should be very economical to run in the B17. I do not plan to fly that every day like the P40 as it will take a lot of hands to transport and set up. Air shows only on her.

Well, my two Zero's will be here on Monday. I'll be going with Sierra's gear for the Yellow Zero. I'm going to go with electric for power (as usual), and I'm still undecided between either the Rimfire 50 or 65cc equivalent. For now I'm going to build one Zero, and keep the other as a spare. As I'm moving back to Hawaii soon, I feel the need to at least repaint the scheme to one that saw action over Pearl Harbor. I'm not going to go nuts with this bash. I will be doing a repaint, mod for Sierras, and add split flaps, full cockpit, dummy radial, panel lines and rivets(vinyl)

If I may ask, what you all did for the spinner? I'm thinking the new Top Flite FW190 spinner would be close? What do you guys think?
Also what cockpit kit have you guys used?

I'm going to be a second on this one before can I start, as I'm just finishing up my Lien/Holman FW190 A8 and have to paint my Fliteskin 109F to get it finished up.
I can't say enough how much I've been looking forward to building this Zero, I've looked at this kit for about 5 years lol. I've also picked up an ESM KI84, so I guess the Japanese are taking over where the Jerry's left off around here. Sooner or later I'm going to have to build one of my Allied kits....for now at least, the power of the Darkside is too strong! LOL

Hey guys, can I ask what your final weights have been? I'm trying it decide on a motor, and I think I will go with the Rimfire 50cc equivalent.

Here are the specs...

SPECS: Aircraft Application:
3D Airplanes up to 18.0lb (8.17kg)
Sport Planes up to 28.0lb (12.7kg)

Can Diameter: 3.14" (80mm)
Can Length: 2.9" (75mm)
Shaft Diameter: .39" (10mm)
Mounting Space Length: 3.44" (87.3mm)
RPM/V (kV Rating): 230
Input Voltage: 33.3-55.5V (9-15S LiPo)
Connector: 6mm bullet plugs
Max. Constant Current: 110A (at 12S)
Max. Continuous Power: 5000W
Max. Surge Current: 135A (at 12S)
Max. Surge Power: 6500W
Max. Constant Watts: 5000W
Weight: 44.1oz (1250g)

REQUIRES: High Voltage Speed control for Brushless Motors such as the
Castle Creations HV Series
Propeller: 22 x 8 - 26 x 10 (due to the high torque and high RPM of
this motor the use of electric-only propellers is not recommended)

I think it will do fine on 12cells. Should have good speed and the ability to swing a large scale sized prop. I might even try that three blade adjustable from Troy built. It would look ok I think with the right spinner. What should the prop diameter be for this plane, for a "scale" size?

Thanks again guys!

Casey

I used to be DLE 55 in mine. I weighed it
A few weeks ago and it came to 22 pounds with engine and retracts installed no servos or battery. So I figure it'll be about 25 pounds with all done because I want to put a small cockpit kit and it also

Well I received my two Zero's today, and I must say at first glance I'm very impressed! Other than a light ply cowl ring I really have no complaints. They even seem to have really beefed up the retract mounts. Solid 1/2x1/2 hardwood with triangle gussets and plenty of glue...
All the covering is nicely done, and the paint is the same. The plane looks very good as is, and I'm considering doing this first one with no mods and CJ gear.( I could be flying in a couple of weeks)

For power I've decided on the Rimfire 65cc equivalent, Castle Creations HV160 ESC, and 2 six cell 6000 MaH 65c battery's .

Still need a spinner, and I'm considering a sound system to help with the CG

The cowling ring you will have to make a new one because you will find out when you start building it that it is junk. And the other thing is that you have to do even if you build it right out-of-the-box, is reinforce the firewall. I used half inch ply on the backside and fiberglassed it all in. others have done it slightly different.

I agree...I should have said that the firewall looks a little thin. They did include a nice motor mount box...even though, you still need a good foundation and the fire wall needs some work.

I will also be using a dummy radial from Aerotech....now I need another one lol.(I had one)

I'm interested in seeing how much weight I need to balance, that will determine if I need the sound system...

Now on the first one that I built, I built it pretty much right out-of-the-box. The only thing that I did with it is relocated the landing gear. But I left the the funky flaps all the same. Had a Bryson 3.2 in it Oh and I had three tanks and it also, right behind the firewall. One was for gas which was the center tank. And then I had two smaller ones on the outside and I use those for my smoker. But altogether it took about 7 1/2 pounds for it to CG. The Bryson weighed 5 pounds and then I also used 2 1/2 half pounds of lead for it to CG so I would reckon that would be something close to what you would need.

i use the wooden box they give you on my first Zero, but on this one as you can see A few pages back, I used standoffs and I like the way that turned out a lot better.

What is the recommended balance point on this bird?

I know sometimes people find a sweet spot that doesn't agree with the info supplied with the kit...

Yup , CG on the plans is good ,but recommend a little on the nose heavy side untill you get your throws set how you like them after maiden .Be sure to measure from the LE at the fuselage as the wing does taper some .

BTW : I see Nitroplanes has now marked up the price to 309.00 and nearly 100.00 for shipping. Before Thanksgiving they were 254.00 and 58.00 shipping . Hmmmm I guess its sale time so lets mark them up.

yep, I picked up two and had them shipped for under $600...just couldnt pass it up.

On a related note....

I emailed Thomas about the release of the new Zero they will be offering... his reply was that ESM was saying before summer of 2013. He predicted March, and he believed it was going to have an 85" wingspan.

Hi everyone,

Being that I have a limited budget, and I want to make sure I can get this largest scale bird I've ever worked on, able to fly before investing hundreds in to retracts. Can someone point me at the right place to get a set of landing gear/struts (NON-retract) that will work well with this bird, being that the stock pair are cheapo's.? I know and am going to reinforce the wing were they are placed. I'll be on a grass field, so I've read something compatible with atleast a 4" tire well be needed.

Thanks, Chris

Since you are going to go with fixed gear and want to keep costs down, I would recommend bending a set of wire struts out of 1/4" music wire and putting a cheap set of Robart strut covers over them.  Anything less than the 1/4" would be to small to handle the weight of the airframe; the 1/4" might even be too bouncy on a grass strip.  Only way to find out is to mount the wire gear and see how they handle the load.

I've been speaking with Charlie at NitroPlanes.  He is going to try to get a few canopies in, is anyone else still wanting one?  One of the two I received were cracked in the box, so I know I do.
