Bummer! I hate opening the cowl just for the header! I hope I don't have to cut the fuselage.
I will have to see the header when it arrive (hopefully next week).
I sent a few pictures with ruler showing the demensions.

Well, Troy's elevator method (V shaped ladder with tubes for .07" carbon rods) is good. If you have enough space and access to the back of the fuselage.

Unless you have V shaped ladder with guide tubes, I am not sure how it will work especially when working with narrow fuselage that is already built.

Yes, Both versions of Explorer have identical fuselage, just different trims. My Acro has ugly nose because of incorrectly mounted front. I don't think you need nose ring.

Those that I know running YS 91 don't use nose ring.
Just be sure to drill the wood rail correctly (not too small, not too big), trial fit the engine with mount. Use medium CA through the holes on wood. Then screw them on. The way that the engine is mounted (angle on the mounts) will keep the thrust angle same.

I don't remember seeing the posting that the YS 91 breaking loose the mounting rails.

I will make a new wing hatch (half pipe tunnel) with glass epoxied to the center of the wing. It will expose tuned pipe for cooling and easy assembly.

Wheels and Wheel pants will be replaced with large ones for long grass field. One of the field closer to home has pretty rough runway with long grass. 2.25" wheels don't work at all.

On the beam mount, Did you use the screws that came with the kit OR did you put blind nuts underneath with bolts through the beam. I can not tell from the picture.

Glad to know I don't need a nose ring. I was assuming that to be the case, based on how the plane is built( since it supposedly is designed around the YS91)

I am gonnahafta(north of Shreveport that's translated into "going to have to" study the back of the Explorer's Fuse to decide about the elevator pushrods. I'd prefer the carbon rod method If I can fit them in. I didn't have any problem getting inside the H-9 Aresti but that's a horse of a different color I sure hope I can -seeing as I've already purchased the carbon pushrod kits from CST and some carbon hollow rods from Central. I may even be tempted to cut extra hatch into the bottom if need be(to get access)

I feel your pain on the grass runway. Thanks GOD !! we have cement. 500'X48' of smooth, but hard cement. Here in DeQuincy where I fly during the week I fly off an asphalt pad thats about 200' square. It makes you lazy on approach wiht that much width -I'd like to paint some stripes simulating the width of a runway (about 30' wide) if I could get permission. It sure is humbling to watch Nat set his Express right out in front of himself and the dang thing roll maybe 75 feet before he turns it around to taxi back. - NOTE: we don't kill the engine on final 'Course this is just practice for fun. !!

Sorry for the rambling
I cut hing slots on the Tweedy Bird last nite. All I have left is install the pushrods and cover it and I can start on the Explorer.

BTW I got Explorer Graphics and JR PROPO for the right wing panel cut by Bill Fulmer (customcutgraphics)
Explorer (fuse)
Explorer V-90 (wing)

Eddie,

I didn't drill the mounting rails yet because of short engine. I am waiting for Karl's header and a 3 mm washer that he is making me one to push the drive washer out to front.

I will probably use the kit supplied self-tapping wood screws for simplicity.

Putting blind nuts will be a real pain in the xxx because there are triangular wood under the mounting rails that you may have to dig out front sides to put the blind nuts.

Also, Blind nuts have slightly larger OD on the threads, so unless you find a way to keep the mounting screws tight to the mounting rails, you will have problem because of vibration.

For the elevator pushrods, an extra hatch will not hurt since you can examine the inside of the fuse much easier, but after installing the pushrods, I suggest you to glue it back or make the hatch fit tight enough to be a part of structure.

One of my other flying field (an hour driving) has short & narrow paved runway. (200' x 10 or 15'). I fly my BeatOn there because of retracts. It is not very good or may have made the field worse because the pavement is about an inch lower than surrounding grass field. You know what will happen when you hit the edge of the run way.

How much did it cost to have the vinyl letters? What sizes?

I hand cut them using Laser printer & trim sheets. Takes about 3 hours to finish.

Gotta go flying today. 97 degrees out at the field. I think it will be over 100 degrees by the time I get to the field.

Later,

I do not remember the size exactly. I looked for my e-mail order to bill, but don't see it.
By memory I think the decal for the wing was 2.75" high X 15" long. I do remember the hieght of the Fuse Decal as 3" but not the length. I can measure them tonite.
When they came in I placed them on the plane to check for fit and was happy so I put them in the box and closed it

I know this is a little off topic.
Just wanted to show off my little "Tweedy Bird"
I will start covering it this weekend.
Work on it has been excruciatingly slowwwwww.
It and the explorer is on hold until after our contest next weekend.

Eddie,

Nice plane with Tweety head.
Why is your nose gear backward?
It looks like a 40 size plane. (my wife will like that plane because of Tweety). What color and trim are you going to use?

If things go well by the end of this year, my wife will start flying again and start learning Pattern. She just started calling the Pattern sequences for me. Gotta find a cheap low wing trainer.

Hurry up building the Explorer!! (just kidding~~)
How are you doing?

I am still trying to solve the mixing problem with my BeatOn.
I got the wrap-around header from Karl Mueller last Tuesday. Didn't try on the Explorer yet because of the contest over the weekend.

When I start building the Explorer, I will put a new page to my homepage with all the descriptions of the plane including the weight, modifications, etc.

I just stuck the nose gear into the motormount hole for the picture.
Actually didn't notice I had it backwards.
I'm not going to actually attach it until after covering the bird.

I am going to copy the covering scheme from the original picture.
I'll try to take a "digital pic" of the label on the box and post it.

I'll also post a pic ot the plane when I get it covered. Gonna have a Just engines "purple pipe" hanging underneath the belly.

The plane is described as 19 -29 size. 48inch wingspan 3.5 -4.5#
Of course this description is from the late '70s. I put an Irvine 25 onit. Wish I had a "blue Bird" pipe for it, but I'd already ordered the Irvine 25 & purple pipe from just engines when you & I started talking about pipes.

My current weight with everything installed except covering is 3#8.6oz. I hope to keep it under 4#. I didn't "try" to build it light. actually used all the riginal wood & some of it was more comarable to OAK than balsa.

I hope the motor - pipe combo works ok. I also got a purple pipe for the Irvine 53 on my H-9 Aresti. It is much too small. Nat loaned me an old 60 size ES pipe. It works much better. I'm turnng a 12X8 and a 11X9 on the '53 wiht the ES pipe.

I flew my JR PROPO EXPLORER 90FAI for the firt time last week. I now have 7 flights on it and it flies great. YS110 with breakin prop(apc 14 x 10) and running rich supplies plenty of power. Seems to have no bad habits and has minimum if any coupling in knife edge.

Weight = 8# 8 ozs(1.5 oz in nose for balance)

Setup:

YS110 with stock muffler.
TruTurn 2 3/4" spinner.
Bolly 60 size gear in place of retracts.
Williams Brothers pilot.
Fuel proofed with epoxy from back of firewall to rear of wing opening.
16 0z. Tettra tank mounted against former under the cockpit.
1/8" glass/nomex servo tray mounted back about 1.5" back from standard position.
Hitec 225bb servo for throttle.
Fut 9252 on the ailerons.
Fut 9151 digital on the rudder. (pull/pull)
Fut9303 on the elevator. 3/16 carbon pushrod with titanium fittings. Two plastic bushings toward the rear end of the pushrod.
1650 mah NiHi battery and heavy duty switch.

Looks Great !!

Did you Beef - up the landing gear mounting area any ?

I'm finally getting mine together.
I'll be posting some pics in a couple of days, also.

I'm gonna use pull-pull on elevator & rudder.

Yes, I cut away the balsa sheeting and put in a 3/16 plywood plate with 1/4 carbon/nomex underneath it along with some triangular balsa stock. Probably over kill.
