I've got a SuperTigre G-51 with about three gallons through it, using an APC 10x7, a MACs header and an old disk type muffled tuned pipe.

Conditions:
  • Fuel: Ritches Brew 10% nitro 20% oil (10/10)
  • Prop: APC 10x7
  • Temp: 72
  • Humidity: 93% (it's raining)
  • Pressure: 29.88 - 630ft above sea level
RPM: 15,200

Is that decent for this engine? I was kinda expecting 16,000+. I can never seem to get the numbers out of my engines that you guys do!

Sounds good to me. Have you 'tuned' the exhaust system?

You are getting more than I expected from this engine.

I originally had this engine on a different plane and was using a 12.25x3.75 APC on it and had tuned the pipe for that prop at about 14,000. I have since moved this engine to a more speed oriented plane and have tuned it some more for the 10x7. I guess the 10x6 would give me 16,000 or so but I'm having some fuel foaming issues that I need to sort out. I've balanced the prop three times and it seems perfect but I'm still getting a good bit of vibration out of it. But truthfully, I'm in uncharted territory as I have never tuned an engine for this kind of speed before. The fuel tank is padded on all sides with foam. Plane should be pretty fast I'd image.

I also have a SuperTigre GS-45. What could I expect out of that engine with this exhaust system on it?

Some G51's have different port timing than others so your results may be less if it has milder timing

Interesting....

I didn't like the 10x7 on it so I retuned for an APC 11x5 and like this one much better. I just didn't have the vertical I wanted with the 10x7. I miss the throttle response of the 10x7 though!

Tuned the pipe for an APC 10x8 on my G-51 this weekend and got 14,100 out of it. Also tried a 12.25x3.75 and got 13,850. I'm anxious to try the 10x8 and see what kind of speed I gain over the 11x5 I've been using. The pipe wasn't really optimized for that 11x5 anyway. I think the APC 11x5 was turning 14,300 or so if memory serves me correctly.

I really love this engine. I equally love the plane it is on. It is a Rookie clone with a 49" foam core wing. 4lbs 11oz dry. I'm using Hitec HS-225MGs on it.

Next project may be this same plane built a bit stronger with a G-90 and a pipe on it!

I have three readings for you with that prop for comparison (and possibly to aim at).

ASP .52 with unmuffled tuned 40 size pipe: 14,200 rpm
OS .50 SX with same pipe as above: 14,300 rpm
OS .46 VF with .60 size Macs pipe: 14,100 rpm

(all above were on fuel with 15% nitro, 18% synth/castor blend)

That sounds like fun! Where can I get info on doing that?

Good numbers!! I'm using Ritch's Brew 10% with 20% (10syn/10castor). I tuned the motor for the 10x8 and then tried the 12.25 with the same tune. I originally tuned this engine for that prop and got right at 14,000 even out of it but I doubt I'd be able to get any more out of it than that.

My next project is going to be this same plane with a Tower 75 or ST G-90 with a pipe. That should be fun.

The only complaint about my Super Tigre G-51 and GS-45 is the transition is a bit sloppy on them. Just about the time the transition from 1/4 to full is right, the idle is too lean and wants to die on a quick blip of the throttle. Both of my engines are about as lean as I can get them on the bottom end with a slightly rich top end (slight smoke trail at WOT). Transition is where my OS 46AX really shines but at twice the price, it is hard to justify.

I wonder if a Perry carb would be worth a try?

For the mid range tuning loosen the two screws holding the spray bar in the carb barrel. Turn the carb barrel slightly clockwise, maybe 5 minutes if it were a dial, and retighten the two screws. It should lean the mid range just slightly and you can repeat the process untill the mid range is where you like it. I usually have to turn mine about 10 to 12 mins which puts the fuel nipple pointing roughly between the two mounting bolt holes.

This has been promoted for mid range adjustment on RCUniverse and RCOnline before that for many years

I think some of the consternation with the Super Tiger carbs is that people will move the spray bar angle without knowing what it is or does.

Messed with the spray bar location on mine and I didn't notice a difference. The low end is about as lean as I want to get it. It idles great and seems to start easy enough.

You probably want to stick with a 10" prop. We have Rookies in our club (originals) and some clones too. Joe has put Jetts on his and gone plenty fast. Mine had a Webra .40 with an Ultra-Thrust, now it's got a TT.40 Pro for some Sport Pylon that we are trying to mix in with Club 40.

I've tried APC 10x6, 10x7 (both vibrate the plane too much at over 15,000) and 10x8 this weekend. Got just over 14,000 with the 10x8 but still didn't like the way it flew. Straight, level and balls out, it was fine. Plenty of speed but it just didn't want to climb like I wanted it to and it didn't want to slow down for a landing like I wanted it to. The 12.25x3.75 had sick vertical and greate slow down but was slow straight and level. The 12.x25 prop was rippin' real nice though! The prop I need on this plane is an APC 11x6 turning 14,500 and this motor won't do that I don't think. An 11x6 MAS Scmitter S2 might work out better. The blades are thin and they flex enough to allow the motor to come on pipe. Either that or I might build another plane lighter. This plane has a foam core wing and it is heavy but super quick to build. I might try swiss cheesing the wing before I sheet it next time. This plane weighs 4lbs 11oz. If I could some how take 8oz off of it, a 10x8 would probably do it. Either that or I might try that new Evolution 60nx. Or should I just say screw it and put a piped G-90 on it? An APC 13x6 turning 13,000 ought to get it I think!

This week, I'm going to tune an OS 46AX I have to turn an APC 11x6 to see what I can get out of it. It weighs a bit more than the G-51 though so I might have balance issues. Right now I have it balanced perfect with no added weight.

Anyone think the 46AX will be stouter than the G-51?

The 46AX was tuned for bigger props and lower rpm for noise abatement

So if I run a pipe on the 46AX what prop do you think I need to run?

You are just going to need to experiment on that one.

The prop you need depends on your plane and flying style
