Fellow modelers,

There's an interesting kit up on Fleabay right now. It's a Fokker D-VII with a 72" span made by a company called Simcoe or Simcoa from Goldendale, WA. Looks to be late '70s or 80s vintage. The picture shown on the instruction booklet looks like it's pretty scale and very detailed. I've never heard of the company and was wondering if anybody has any information on it or knows from experience about this kit or ones like it. Thanks.

Simcoe was quite popular in the eighties with scale "builders" .They made some kits but most planes were scratch-built from plans. I did see the Fokker DR1,Leopard Moth,Pitts S1,Cap 21, Zlin Z50,and the Sopwith Pup as completed models throughout the years. All looked quite good as far as scale outline and flew well on available power of the time.I think with modern choices in power,ie,electric, wide selection of gas, and some pretty powerful 4-stroke engines of today, you'll have much fun and confidence flying the Fokker.
I always wanted to build the Pitts S1 but never did.

Here are some pages from an old Tower catalog (1987)that show all that they carried twenty years ago.

It really looks like the Orline Fokker design. Look at the part number OL781, plus the covering is transparent in the photo.

BTW, do you have more pictures of more Stafford models in that catalog?

I agree the Simcoe Fokker D-VII looks like the Orline models D-VII.I don't have any catalog pages of Orline models to confirm.

However, since we're going down memory lane, I thought I would throw these out there. These are all from a 1987 Tower catalog so don't go calling them and ordering something at those '87 prices.

Maybe these pictures will clear up the origin.

I believe the DR1, D8 and Nieuport were part of the Scratch-A-Plane designs and must be the kit versions. They must have collected designs.
