Well I have to say I am impressed...

After all the dust has settled with the whole RC jet models/Wagner/Fei Bao drama, I am the proud owner of a beautiful Mig 21 ARF that was shipped as promised by Catherine from Fei Bao.

I have to admit at first I was apprehensive, especially since I had to have my credit card company reimburse me my $2100 that I had originally given rcjetmodels. But contacting and doing business with Catherine & Fei Bao was as easy as 1-2-3.

1. I shot her an e-mail (China is opposite time zone so their morning is our night so if you fire out an e-mail around 7-9 p.m. our time Catherine usually responds within a few hours and ALWAYS by next morning for us).

2. Catherine stepped up to the plate and offered to complete plane with no down payment and to update me with regular photos so I can approve color schemes, etc...

3. When finished product was ready, I received full color photos of plane assembled, a bill I could follow and understand, and a nice discount for shipping and other goodies.

BY THE WAY...Now you can get All Fei Bao planes from Mike Denilin and Global Jet Club right here in the US...

So why is this a professional build thread? Well, I certainly am no pro, and I really wanted to see what a professionally built plane looks, acts, flies like...(especially the interior electronics neatness which is so hard when you have so many wires and tubes with jets...) Enter Eric Clapp (Jet Central Turbines) and Bill Hatcher (Hatcher's Hangar Building Service).

I know what you are thinking, Eric is JC Rep in North America what does this he have to do with plane building? Well, he is old enough to have seen the first flight at Kittyhawk sorry Eric and he has a side business that is completely unrelated to his primary occupation as a JC Rep, and that is the fact that he and Bill Hatcher make a great partnership of experienced, competent, diligent plane builders that offer full service from start to finish at an excellent rate.

So...I had the plane shipped directly from China to North Port Florida where these two fine gents reside. Work has just begun, and over the next few weeks I will be posting regular updates, photos, and tips from these fellas. Obviously, they will likely want to chime in themselves, as like everyone else, until this plane is done, I am just an observer rooting on the home team.

I will soon post some preliminary photos soon as sent by Bill and talk about what servos, valves, engine, etc... is being contemplated. The experts will likely correct me where necessary and since I am not there, they will hopefully be commenting on small fixes, overall quality, and their general impressions of the plane & build.

Look, I enjoy building, repairing, and tinkering as much as the next guy. I am currently scratch building an SBD-5 Dauntless from Jerry Bates plans, and my first 4 planes were kit built in the late 80's / early 90's and I'd like to think I am not a complete dunse when it comes to putting an ARF together, but there is a difference between the way an average joe like me puts a plane together and the way an expert who does this for a living puts it together. I mean everybody can buy a betty crocker cake mix box, burn a couple of cake halves in the oven and slap some pre-made frosting on and I am sure that tasted just fine on Sunday watching the game with some burgers, but if it's a special occasion, you might want to let a bakery do the job especially since their version looks and tastes a hell of a lot better.

Hope this thread helps anybody thinking of buying Fei Bao or building a Mig 21 from Fei Bao, and most importantly, if you're swamed with no time and just need a great jet to fly with little cost to pay out, you may consider hiring this tandem of guys for your next build and have them do all the work while you do all the flying! I am sure you can contact them directly through this thread as they will appear from time to time, and if you want, just e-mail or pm me and I will give you their direct contact info so you can get a quote and chat with them about your builds.

So I sent Bill & Eric 5 X JR8611 ...(2 elevator, 2 flaps, 1 steering) and a BVM Smoothstop Version 2, UP3, TamJet Gear Failsafe, JR 1222 Receiver with dualswitch powersafe, 2 X 2700 mAh Nimh for RX, a Jet Central SUper Eagle Turbine (of course), a 5200 mAh LiIon for ECU battery, and all turbine components (i.e. fuel pump, solenoids, etc...).

They will provide rest of electronics, servos, wiring, hinges, glue, hysol, and EVERYTHING else needed and just bill me for it. You don't have to send them anything if you don't have it. You can just call them and tell them what plane you want and what engine you want, and they'll go get the plane and engine, have it delivered, built, readied and then sent to you. The reason I sent these parts, servos, turbine is because I had them already in anticipation of this new jet. These guys also get a lot of equipment wholesale so check with them before you buy since they may get a better price than you. Also, all the glue, hysol, hinges, etc... is fully covered for a price that ...well... let's just say it's a flat rate that is extremely fair.

By the way, included in the build other than a perfect assembly and testing is supposed to be the following:

Build Labor (includes complete detail and paint of interior of jet, complete programming for 12X (thats what radio I have, I am sure they will adjust to the radio that you have), initial start up, Range test, taxi test, with video documentation, preparation for shipping and delivery drop off to FTE for container and shipping (in my situation, per Vincent (Fei Bao Mig 21 Guru) the box the Mig comes in is big enough and the Mig breaks down into 2 parts, so the container that she was received into China with is the same that will be sent to me with the plane carefully re-packed into it. This drastically cuts down on shipping costs for me.

Inititial photos next...

So this is the e-mail I got from Bill 3 days after he received the plane. I am not sure if colors will show up as I cut and pasted from my e-mail box, but each line is colored in a different color and there is a legend Bill posted at the bottom outlining what each color means:

Red means it's covered under the flat fee I gave them
Blue means that I have already provided it myself
Green is items they need to purchase and bill me for in order to finish the plane

Okay, let's start with Catherine and Fei Bao and some photos. I am NOT going to get into a political battle over who was right and wrong with rcjetmodels vs. Fei Bao. All I want to do is to fly jets. That's it. I have no vested interest in either party and I am just reporting what happened to me. In my dealings with Catherine and Fei Bao, they were

1. Honest
2. Fair
3. Diligent
4. Fast

Thes are progress photos I received from Fei Bao while plane was in factory. FYI my first contact with her was 7/17/09, Bill Hatcher received my plane at his doorstep in Florida on 9/1/09. Approximately 45 days.

I'll rent you may trained octopus for the build, he's already built one and you'll need him before you're finished. You will understand when you are up to your elbows with both arms at the same time working by feel.

Hi Ian,

I am putting together a MIG21 to fly around. I am sure your F-20 will be in my gun sight.

This thread is helpful, now I got no more excuse from my builder that he has no manual for it. Keep it coming.

Hey Mike, wattup buddy?

What scheme is your Mig 21? By the way, as you all know-or need to know- Mike Denilin now distributes Fei Bao planes through "Global Jet Club". So if you want one of these Migs, talk to him. We should all get Migs and have a Mig rally!

Mike, check the trash can in back of your warehouse for empty green bottles, your builder has been slacking!

Here's the Mig 21 Manual, no more excuses for him! Build! Build! Build!

Shaz, get to know your new bandit - Ian's F-20. (scroll to the right of the screen, it's very small)

I will get my MIG next week and will post my build thread here too.

Cal Jet, wow! You know, if I start planning now and try to convince wife she wants me gone for a week, I may just make it! It's going to be me and a buddy and a BIG FAT TRAILER FULL OF MIGS. Now, on the to more info...

Bill sent me this e-mail the day he got the Mig, meaning he works fast since he already knew what the manual said about servo requirements...

"Shaz, attached is a list from the Manual for the Mig 21.

There is no way to get a JR 8611 in the bay provided for the Ailerons.

The Jr DS3301 is the way to go.

The 8611 is a tight fit in the flap slot but I can get it in there.

On the Items needed how do you want me to proceed?

Do you want me to purchase the items and bill you, Or would you like to purchase the items and send to me.

I will be happy to obtain all the items and bill you with the final bill if you like.

When the plane is Complete Eric and I will purge the fuel system and run the turbine twice.

After we are happy with the performance we will drain all the fuel except for the UAT so that when you receive the plane all you will need to do is charge, Fuel and FLY."
