I have a 41 with 6 flights on it. During this past weekend at the Scale Nationals I could not get this motor to run well enough to get in an official flight.
The motor when started would run up to full throttle and sounded decent. Then pulling the throttle back to idle, I could only get it to run at a fast idle, then when advanced again to full throttle it would die. I installed a new spark plug and the fuel is fresh mixed to 32:1.
I also had to remove the spring starter due to a bearing failure, but I think that is probably unrelated to the way it is running.
Needless to say I am not a very happy camper right now after all the effort that goes into going to a contest of this nature and not being able to fly with a motor that has not much more than one hour of running. However, please advise what you think is the problem.
Thank you.

If your fuel's changed, you may need to reset the needles. It depends upon the fuel/oil combination used. It sounds like the engine's a bit rich at idle, causing excess fuel flow when you try to accelerate.

We (myself and 3 friends with a lot of gasoline experience) tweaked the needles for almost 2 hours on Saturday. Any other thoughts?

Is your engine in a cowl or in the open?? My 41 is having erractic idle problems and after a flight or running on the ground for several minutes, the top side of the cowl is very warm to the touch. Several people suggested it may be getting to hot inside the cowl, I cut the cowl opening bigger last night and hopefully can fly it tonight and see if there is any improvement.

Steve,
The first six flights on this motor went fine. It is cowled in but I think there is plenty of inlet and exit air. Let me know how you do though. I am at wits end with this one and about ready to pull it out and replace it. It took 18 months to build the plane it is in and certainly don't want to loose it to a failing motor.
Thanks.

It could be that there's a passage in the carburetor that's blocked. The typical carb on these engines has a pump and a regulator. If a passage gets blocked with trash, the regulator won't work right, and the engine could be starving or flooding when you open the throttle.

In the worst case, the engine should be put on a test stand to see if it will run there. If it runs on the stand and not on the model, then it's not the engine, but something in the engine/model/systems combination is causing the proble. If you have the same problem on the test stand, the you know it's the ngine.

Thanks Bill, I will check the carb. and if nothing is found I will put it on the test stand this weekend, then if it still is not running right I think it will be coming your way.

I have a filter in the fuel line of my US41. One day it started running poorly and finally die in the air. I could get it started but it would quit above an idle. When I check the filter it was plugged. I cleaned it out and runs great again. I us filters in all my planes it helps break up air bubbles in the fuel line. I've never had one plug on me before. This is my first gas engine and it has been a good one.

I finally got to fly with the bigger opening, a little better improvement but still an un reliable idle. I put a Fuji 50 in the plane, once the engine warmed up it would surge at full throttle(on the ground), I built an air dam so that the air has to go through the cylinder fins and now the engine runs great and stays cool.

There is a filter in the carb. that I did find a very slight amount of debris. The diaphram looked distorted and not very flexible so I replaced that. The carb. is now back on the motor and it is ready to try. Hopefully will get a chance yet this week to try it. Thanks for the input.
