I just replied to a thread about Ca hinges that GP had furnished with their 1/3 scale Pitts. Do any of you feel this is an unnecessary
risk for those hinges to be included in that size of kit ? He was
putting a G-62 on the Pitts and asked if anybody thought it was
OK. Out of the 6 or 7 replies, I was the only one to say no-way.
Not only do the Mfg's supply junk for hardware, now they've out-
done themselves. I don't follow the ARF parade ; so do the other
mfg's of jumbo arfs supply those hinges ? Have any of you read
the safety articles in High Flight Magizine (IMAA) about UV rays
breaking down the Ca soaked hinges and causing failures ?

personally I have never had a problem nor have I seen a problem in the 10 plus years I have been flying. (If installed properly) In larger planes I usually tend to add a few more hinges than is called for.

"UV rays
breaking down the Ca soaked hinges and causing failures ?"

Well I didn't read the article but if that were the case wouldn't the UV rays break down the CA holding your whole plane together?

While a far cry from 1/4 scale, a brand new LT40 (ARF) had the elevator hinges fail on the fithth flight; three of the four hinges broke cleanly into two pieces as if you had run a knife blade down between the elevator and stab resulting in total destruction. since there are many of these at the field as we all think that they are probably the best trainer around, an immediate inspection of all took place. Found the aileron hinges on one other had failed in a similar manner and another had one of the four elevator hinges failed in the same manner. This last plane had many flight on it, at least a hundred as it is now training its third flyer. These are all the hinges that were supplied with the original model. Note, no problem was found with five other of the same model. I think this just means that you should do a good preflight check on your hinges each flying session. Regardless of the type hinges you use, this should be common operating procedure although I'll bet most of us do not.

I hear this a lot about hinges, my thing is look at what they are attached to, the trailing edge. Most are a butt joint to trailing edge sheeting and the back of your ribs, with the trailing edge being thin balsa. It seems a lot of us want to "use a log chain to tie up a Poodle". Just look at what all your super secure hinges are attached to. Just my thoughts. Check it for yourself, next crash grab a CA hinge and pull, the wood lets go, not the hinge or a glue joint if properly installed.

I am with you Randy, I wouldn't trust those type on a Large scale aircraft ARF or not I would use a reg 1/4 scale hinge peged into the Airframe. I have had some CA hinges fail and I currently only use then on smaller aircraft.

I'll use CA hinges on planes up to 60 size. And on the 60 size ones, I'll usually add a few more hinges to each surface.

The only reason a CA hinge would break in flight "like it was cut with a knife" is if it was improperly installed. You shouldn't use too much glue on a CA hinge. Too much glue, and the hinge gets cut by the dried glue crystals left on the hingepoint. You only need about 2-3 drops on each side of a CA hinge.

For bigger planes, you can't beat a Robart hinge. The gray ones with the big knuckles in the middle. I use an 1/8" bit and then a cone shaped Dremel bit to countersink the knuckle on the hinge. Makes a gapless hinge everytime.

I usually add more hinges than are called for in the plans. If an aileron calls for 4 hinges, I'm more likely to put in at least 5 and sometimes 6.

On the other hand, I have never had a plane so long that it had a hinge failure. I usually wind up crashing them before a major component fails.

The SIG SU31 ARF that I am assembly now came with SIG "X" hinges. They look like big Dubro pinned hinges. I would never use CA hinges on a plane this big.
