I will be building a modified BlueJay Dirty Birty kit to spec properly with RCM plans.

Contemplating a set of foam cores for the stab and wing- or building them up at the moment..... I'll probably go with foam at this point. I will definitely be glassing this project.

I could have just bought the ARF, but I enjoy the build.

I spoke to Don last night, he was shopping for his triplets. He said he had sent out 25 or 30 email blasts about his sale and has already gotten 10 more orders. I was over to his house last week and he had cores and fuselages for kits all over the shop. He cut some vinyl for my Dad and myself. Nice stuff, too.
He's making me an Arrow for my Christmas present, the one he's building for himself is looking good.

Well, I'm finishing up a new/old Bootlegger. I had one in 1979, won AMA Expert at the '79 Lincoln, NE NATS with it, see the attached 'old' pic... don't laugh at the kid in it though...

I came about this the same way as back in 1979, Steve Helms gave me the kit this spring when I was at a heli contest in Huntsville. As you may suspect, this will be a nostalgic and somewhat emotional project...

Since I pretty much don't have anything to build airplanes with anymore (I use hammers and files on my helis!) I tracked down someone who I used to fly pattern with in the day to frame it up. Sam Leonard did a fantastic job framing it up and glassing the wood, making it ready for rigging and paint.

This past weekend I got the wing done; servo tray in the wing, mains installed and hooked up to the servo and aileron servo installed and linkaged. I'm going old school here, one servo with drilled output wheel for differential if needed! Next will be the fuselage... then paint.

The model will be powered by a N.I.B. OPS F.I.R.E. 'Big Red' .60 and pipe (thanks Rusty!)! and I'm using Dave Brown Southern Pro retracts. Radio will be new stuff, Futaba 18MZ with 7 channel FASST RX and digital servos.

I'm shooting for test flight by Christmas, can't wait to hear the scream!

The bootlegger looks like a plane I'd really like. Was there a version without the embedded tuned pipe?

Maybe so... but the "Bootlegger" is SPA legal, the "Exception", I don't think so.

Greg,

Could it be the other way around? I don't know if there a specific date that can be attributed to the Exception. In fact, I think anyone would be hard pressed to tell the difference between an Exception and a Deception once finished. Thanks to Chris and Don, I have bought an Exception and as far as I can tell, there is no difference between the two other than the fact that the Exception has a glass fuse bottom under the canopy but otherwise they are the same model.

Oh, one detail, the Exception has a "flared out" canopy rear to allow the pipe to exit. Once a Deception glass canopy was prepped for a RE piped setup, it would again be hard to tell the difference.

In short, The Exception and Deception are the same plane except the former has a glass fuse. Wing and stab on both are identical. One can of course also produce a full length rudder in either but that is a builders choice which I doubt would disqualify either model from being legal.

Hey Scott,

The canopy on the Exception (Just a fiberglass version of the Deception for

RE Exhaust Engines) has kind of the look of the ones on the XLT /Escape.

The canopy was also available just by itself, more blunt and rounded though.
