Hey huys,.........heat wave here in south florida as well.  In the high 90's for over a month now.  Know the  "ROASTING" feeeling very well.  i also use velcro straps to hold down my batteries.  Fuel gets into the cowl and weakens the rubber bands.  It happened to my revolver 59.  I've used velcro ever since.  Happy flying ! !

That is hot but we in Missouri have been at 100 to 102 with high humidity for a couple
weeks now.  We are still flying like mad and I think I am adapting or evolving.  Save your
eyes and ware UV blocking sunglasses.  Never look into the sky without them on.  I have
RX Boli sunglasses that increase contrast and just love them.  Save your eyes!  I say this
after observing some of our 70 year old pilots that have had their lens's replaced because
of UV damage.

Stay cool,
Tim

Wow...that is what I call dedication and committment to RC flying! I have flown quite a bit in high heat, but usually early in the morning or late evening. The cool thing is, NO ONE else flies then at our fields so you pretty much have it to yourself. I prefer to have at least one other person around for safety though.

When we would go early, we would fly until it just got so miserable that it took most of the fun out of it. I think the worse thing is when sweat keeps getting in your eyes or you have to keep wiping your head, sweat is dumping all over your radio, and the covering on your planes look like the skin on a mummy. Man, that is guts and grit flying, right there Although, that does take much of the "fun" impact out of it. If there is a breeze blowing at least that helps a lot. If it is dead still and scorching it is hard to enjoy it.

I need to see if I can adapt or evolve because I don't want to miss any flying opportunities! Especially now that I am trying to see how long I can hang the Rev 70 on the prop. When I go back to the field, I plan to see if I can at least hang it for a 15 count.

Luchnia - I'm still amazed that you're hovering the Rev 70. I'm heading out now to the field with my Rev 70 \ DLE 20 (and APC 16x7). I"m going to try to hover. Will let you know.

Who here flies when it gets in the mid to high 90s - maybe around 95/96?

A bunch of us flew here in Texas last Friday and it was 107 with 5-10mph winds. I got there around 11:00am and left about 4:00pm. I had 9 bottles of water that day and my clothes were soaked through but we had a good time.

Hey, let me know the verdict with your attempts! Get the plane in a circuit at a decent height and then just straight up for a short stretch then see how long you can hold it in a hover position. You might surprise yourself. As much as you fly I bet you can hang that plane for a good bit. I have found that just flying with others and trying things that they do and of course listening to how they do things has helped me a lot. I still struggle big time with those blasted flat spins! I just have to keep trying. Heck, that is the fun of it afterall.

I can even hover my Pulse XT 40 reasonably well and the guys always get a kick out of that. Of course, I have flown that plane well over 400 flights now and am extremely used to every characteristic of it. Now mind you, I cannot hover anything like the pros! Basically just hanging on the prop some. I plan to try this weekend, if the covering don't melt off my planes. I think it is supposed to be around 100s here, but maybe we will catch a break and I can get out and fly some.

I don't mind flying in the hot all that much, but sometimes the sweat gets in my eyes and then I just wipe sweat and suntan lotion and my eyes burn worse than ever and I cannot half see! Hopefully, I will get some stick time in though.

Well, bad news on the Rev 70 \ DLE 20 front. Was flying beautifully this morning - the plane and the engine, though the DLE 20 did cut out once after a knife-edge (I have no idea why that happens - plenty of fuel in the tank). I did try a few hovers, but didn't get close - told myself I'll just keep trying a little more each flying session. Then I started experimenting with upright flat spins (I usually do them inverted). Was doing ok, but also noticed that the plane like's to keep spinning after you release the controls - a bit scary. So I just made sure I had altitude, and then it was not a problem. Then I started practicing rudder turns - I've been playing with these and they're fun. But I was rusty today. Then I got into one, and started coming down, so let go of the controls to pull out and the engine stalled. The plane came pretty much straight down. Hit the ground hard - I was in shock. This was my best plane. On inspection the fuse is toast, wings look fixable. Engine looks ok. As soon as I got home I went onto Tower and saw that fuses' are not due in till August (knowing Tower that might mean December). And looking at the parts I needed - fuse, cowl, canopy, wing bar, and then seeing the price of the entire plane is now down to $199 (!!), I just ordered the entire plane (which is in stock). Also ordered a new tail gear so that I could qualify for the $200 level discount ($30). So I just got a new Rev 70 for $170. Not too bad (even though I'm still bummed about the crash and losing my favorite plane). Now I'm stripping the wreckage, hoping I'll remember how everything goes back together (I will)).

This is my second crash in 8 days. Tough hobby sometimes.

Sorry to hear about your crash Mike. You must have been pretty low at the bottom of your flat spin. I usually break out of my flat spins at 75-80 ft altitude, so that i can establish a down line for 15-25', and then pull out with something to spare.

The good news is that each REBUILD is better than the last, taking advantage of all the little things we learned from the last.

Hope your engine is OK.

Bill

Crashing always reeks. I saw a guy flying a top wing gasser the other day - a real nice plane. He was doing an inverted flyby at almost full throttle and just dumb thumbed it and the plane went into the ground like a rocket. He told us that it was nothing but dumb thumbs to blame.

Toasted most everything except the electronics. They seemed to be ok. Even broke the cylinder on the engine. He literally had to dig the engine out fo the ground! Just stinks is all I can state. That is the thing about balsa and plastic, light weight and crunches very easily!

Yep, the Rev 70s are a sweet deal at TH right now with the sale and the discount. I am very tempted to order one and get a DLE20 and pop it on there. If I did not have so many planes right now, might go for it. I really need to delete some of my stock instead of buying more.

I know of one very quick way to reduce some of your stock. But it's not painless...

Having been in this hobby only 4 years I now understand car collectors and gun collectors. I just want more planes. Might be an addiction. I find myself cruising RC Universe's "Buy and Sell" section, late at night.

I must admit, I cruise the Buy and Sell section myself and I love to look at all the sport planes and the different setups. I cruise the engine section, looking for that special deal on a DLE 20 for my Rev 70 Been looking for long time. Maybe I am too tight with the coins

Not sure what that is. Fortunatly I have been able to control my buying no matter how much I look. Sometimes I am thinking, 450, 500, 600...ain't too bad, heck go ahead and click "buy now" HAHAHAHAAAA Then a voice says, you cannot even fly all the planes you have now! Where are you going to put another plane? Those voices come from my head.

I am glad my wife never says those things. She is so cool about my planes. If I told her I am buying a new plane, she would just say, "Ok, that is good". I am worse about it than she is - maybe that is a good thing.

RC planes are very addictive, but more than that I wish I had more time to fly.

Luchnia - I'd recommend buying the DLE 20 new. At $220 ($270 less the $50 TH discount once you add a few items to hit $300) it's very reasonable, and you get a year warranty. Plus I doubt anyone is selling a used DLE 20 - they're too new and too well liked. On the warranty, I just returned my new DLE 30 to TH because it just wasn't starting - they are replacing the entire engine.

Besides TH for DLE engines, many people swear by Valley View RC. Excellent service there.

I'm all for buying used engines (YS, OS, etc) when they're a few years old, but I'd stick with new DLE's for the next year or so.

SpinnerRow - Thanks. Yesterday was "shock and mourning" day - today I'm over that and in "rebuild" mode. Received the new fuse yesterday for the Rev 59 that I crashed last week so will be starting that rebuild today. Also, I still have one RTF Rev 59 and one RTF Rev 70 - that's why we have lots of planes, right?

Have been unemployed for a year, and start a new job on Monday. I'm very happy (and fortunate) to get back to work, but will miss the free days of flying and building. One very good thing about this new job is my flying field is right on the way to work - so I'll be able to get up early and fit in some 1 hour flying sessions before work!

Way to go microdon2,

Sorry to hear about your loss. But glad to hear you are building a new rev70.  She is worth another shot. Great plane.  I'm still having fun flying my two revolvers the 59 and 70.  Both are much fun.  Good luck with the next build ! !

Good idea, I was thinking about that the other day. I might experiment with some different props, too. Might make it a tad easier as the 14x6 does not hold it there long before it wants to drift off to the side and roll out. I think I have a 14x4 that should give it more throttle management to help it hang. I will make myself a note to get the CG for you as well.

One guy at one of the fields I fly at does have some sort of small video cam. I have not seen him in a while, but I will see if I can get someone to do that. I know I can probably get the misses to video once it cools down some. TOO stinking hot around here right now. Once I got home from work, I mowed for a couple hours and could hardly cool off.

They are saying temps around 102 here tomorrow....sheeesh. I need another good flying weekend.

Went out to the field yesterday morning for a while. Temps were nasty hot, but I wanted to get some time in. It was around 92 at 10:30. Around our area that is tight with the humidy we have. One other person came out so we flew for a couple hours and packed it up. We were sweating early.

I did try to prop hang the Rev 70 some while I was there. I did not do as good as I did the other day with it. I had a slight breeze from my back and the best I could get was a five count. She kept rolling off bad to the left when I tried to keep it hanging. I couldn't even hang the Twist very good yesterday either. I noticed with the Rev 70 and the prop combo I have if I just make sure the plane has ever so slight a climb it will hang some. Just holding it dead still is tight. (More practice - gives me an excuse to fly more)

One thing is for sure, if you ever try this with the Rev 70 DO NOT do it low to the ground One time I was a tad low and she rolled out and did not want to correct, but I was able to get her leveled out in time. I usually practice prop hangs with plenty altitude, but was just too low that time.

Even at the high temps it was still a blast and with the Rev 70 it will knife edge so nicely and has such nice looking lines while flying a little sweat in the eyes isn't so bad
