Just to varify that I ordered a new cooling fan on wednesday last week and it arrived on the Friday. I don't think we can complain about a two day turnaround.

By the way chaps have any of you had problems with the clutch keep undoing. I've tried every lock tight known to man and it still works loose (hence the replacement cooling fan)

I'm hoping it was the dodgy MDS engine that was at fault (Trust me don't ever buy one of these paper weights) I've replaced it with an Irvine heli 36. I will be trying out the new set up this afternoon so i'll let you know how it goes later.

Two day turnaround time is fine, absolutely no problems there

My clutch/fan has never come loose and I'm using an MDS. I'm assuming you put red loctite on the fan nut? Maybe you have a spacing problem with a washer too many/too few?

What heli have you got?

I have the Hawk sport its a good bird when its running I found the MDS too unreliable and a pig to start. I bought it last week and am selling it for £20. its only been run for 5 mins and is still pristine.

I went for the irvine in the end

Lots of guys seem to find the MDS a bear to run.

Maybe I got lucky???

But even if you have a crap engine, I don't see how that would cause the clutch to work loose? Unless its vibrating like hell.

Surely a clutch working loose is more of a spacing or installation problem? But I'm not exactly highly experienced, maybe some of the veterans can add some thoughts.

The MDS engines are like buying into a lottery. There is the odd winner (Rawlie I want you to buy my lottery tickets ) but you also take a chance of getting a dud. And it seems there are more duds then winners.

I have used them on airplanes with acceptable success but find their heli engines are very questionable. The main reason is because their carbs are not up to the task of being user friendly in a heli. (They still seem to use airplane type of carbs in their heli engines.) The most important difference between an airplane version of an engine and its' heli brother is not the lack of muffler, or the heat sink head, but the different fuel metering system in the carbs needle valves.

Rawlie

How does a "dud" engine cause the clutch to break loose - by having a tendency to pre-ignition or a tendency to back fire.

WOw! what a difference the Irvine 36 has made she fired up immeadiately only needed slight adjustment on the bleed screw and ran like a dream.

After running her in for 20 minutes on one flight She was up and away and doing full circuits.

I'll never trust an MDS again.

In answer to your question Rawlie the MDS unscrews the clutch upon starting if she does'nt fire up then it will immediately hydraulic lock causing the starter probe to unscrew the clutch which forces the cooling fan into the shroud...result no cooling fins left on the fan.

I strongly recommend the Irvine or the OS engines for Helis.

Happy flying...
