I have been shopping for  a new video card and I just realized that I am not going to be able to run the reccomended video card.  My system has a 400 watt power supply and the recommended card spec requires a 450 power supply or higher.  I am currently running the Nvidia GT 240 and it is running fine on a medium graphics setting.  I cranked it up to "insane" and WOW the graphics are incredible but it is pushing my card to the limit and I am getting some artifacts.

I have a couple of questions.  Is a power supply upgrade in order and is it easy to install?

Your comments and or suggestions would be much appreciated.

THX

Hi tele, most of the high end ATI and nvidia cards need at least 500-600W. This also depends on what other power-hungry peripherals are hooked up to your system. Bear in mind that the power efficiency of a PSU does degrade with time as well. 400W is very much on the low side for the GT240. You could upgrade your PSU but check out with your computer supplier technical support on compatibility and cost.

I am using Aerofly 5 to practice my IMAC sequence and it is working flawlessly.  The graphics are insane.   I haven't been doing much 3d flying.   The Aeroworks extra isn't balanced well for 3d.  The tip stall is violent and unrealistic.  The throttle response, pull out and wash over the tail is also strange.  I haven't spent much time attempting to tweek it yet.  I read that Aerofly 5 has entirely new 3d physic modeling... I hope the Dr. that designed it is also a RC pilot.  From what I have seen so far, I think not.

Right now... I wish their was an Attitude indicator as one of the gadgets.  I would be cool to know if I am pulling a perfect 45 degree upline or down line.   I spent a week with David Scott at his flight school last week and he continued to correct my up lines.  I am just not seeing it yet.

My real Aeroworks 35cc Extra 260 has a violent tip stall, so maybe the simulation is realistic. For example, if I pull up on low rates about 3/4 stick at cruising speed it will drop a wing. I have to be careful with any significant elevator input. Also, it frequently tip stalls on landing, so I really have to be careful to keep the speed up and not flare too soon. Another pilot commented to me that his Aeroworks Extra tended to tip stall, but I don't know to what extent.

In my new December 2010 Fly RC magazine there is a three page Aerofly 5 ad. I guess that Santa will be bringing Aerofly 5 to all the good little girls and boys.

The ad lists the www.ikarus-usa.com web site, but the "Shop" link takes you to the German web site. I guess the supply chain needs to catch up with the marketing.

Do you know where I could find out more about the settings in the flight parameters area of Aerofly 5?   I hope the answer isn't, the library in the aviation physics section.   I found the "tip and root stall" settings... what does the rest of it all mean?

I have not had any time to play with Aerofly 5 yet. Too many real-life issues to deal with at the moment. However, I do plan on doing some significant practicing over the winter. You will probably be the Aerofly 5 expert by then.

I E-mailed Ikarus about Aerofly 5 and they responded and said in October they will have the USA site running. Cool

Any one has tried the Aerofly5 what is the difference in AFPD & Aerofly 5 ? I mean in AFPD i felt that the planes are too light for a 40% type airplane is it the same with the Aerofly 5...

No, there were significant changes to the physics engine.

AF5 seems MUCH better to me. The planes lost that "always on rails" feeling of AFDP and now seem to behave quite authentically.
Helis are much better than before too.

Try a tail touch in AFDP and then in AF5 to see some huge differences in the physics modeling.

Some of the planes in AF5 seem far too powerful for me, but that's easy enough to tweak in the editor.

3D graphics are also greatly improved, and it's a trip to fly an RC plane through the center of one of the island towns.
The towns have extensive 3D details. Street signs, churches, restaurants, cars, etc.

Note: the latest update has caused consistent texture glitches on my various machines ( I've tried it on three machines and all three have the same problem! ) using high end Nvidia cards on multicore processor systems. I posted examples of this on another thread.

The 3D plane scaling is ok but not great. I'm sure the developers could fix this easily too.

e.g. a 88" plane takes up the full width of a 3D road, instead of part of one lane.

Panoramic airfields have been improved as well.

It's an impressive update.

From the IPAC Aerofly 5 forum.  This simulator and company is continuing to impress me.  This is fantastic that they are recruting world class pilots to help with the set up of models.

Dear AeroFly Users,

we would like to inform everybody that our next big Update to AeroFly 5.5 is coming in November 2010. This is a free update for all existing customers and will be available as a download. Please keep in mind that the information here is still preliminary and subject to changes.

AeroFly 5.5 will feature the following things:
  1. Over 30 new models:
10 new helicopters ( including flybar less helicopters like Trex 600, ThreeDee and Logo 600 )
    4 jet models ( e.g. C5 Galaxy, Airmacchi MB 339 )
    over 10 new scale models ( e.g. Tigermoth, P38, Corsair F4U )
    5 new gliders ( e.g. Alpina 5001, Reiher, Scheibe Falke 25 )
new RC models like Spark, Obsession and Yak 54
    True Scale models
  2. 5 new photo sceneries including a new hang gliding scenery
  3. Support and Tools for creating your own models and sceneries
  4. Improved model graphics to better simulate model surfaces
  5. Realistic simulation of water wakes in 4D sceneries
  6. Improvements to the user interface

Please don't ask us for further details yet or for an exact release date now. We are still in the development phase. We are proud to say that we were able to get the help of world class pilots again to set up our models especially the new flybarless helicopters.

Raul a few questions please?

I have AFPD for WIN XP but now i run the new IMAC system. I have been using a Futaba 8U TX.

Can you upgrade from A WIN AFPD to a MAC AF5?

Do I need to buy the adapter for my TX?

Is the MAC system ready to ship at this time...it appears that the shopping cart accepts the order but i have conflicting information?

Thanks...Lou

Can you upgrade from A WIN AFPD to a MAC AF5? [Yes you can. Just get the AF5 Mac upgrade from AFPD Item No.: 3071006. You will need to use the same AFPD usb interface cable. Please ensure that your Mac system and video card meets the requirements for AF5]

Do I need to buy the adapter for my TX? [Use the same adapter you have been using for your 8U]

Thanks...Lou

Good to hear that! There were some teething problems but they should have ironed them out by this week.

Rajul,
I'm about to purchase aerofly 5 but am very confused as to whether or not I need to purchase an extra cable for my transmitter.  i have a Spektrum HP6DSM and a macbook pro.  I keep reading conflicting information regarding the requirements.  I want to make sure that when i purchase aerofly 5 I have everything ready to get going.  Can you please let me know if I do need a cable or is everything included.  Thanks

schiffo, for JR and Spektrum, the cables that you need are in the attached diagram. You would have to get the adapter cable for JR/Spektrum (Part #31036) separately, check this with your retailer.
