I received my ESM corsair along with the esm retracts today. I decided to get them despite the very mixed reviews due to the $140 price tag. I figured if I don't end up using them, so be it. I couldn't find any good pictures of them so I figured I would post some along with some first impressions.

They seem to be pretty good for the price based on first inspection. Mine cycle smooth and do not seem to leak air. Also, the brittle air that has been mentioned looks like it was replaced with something more flexible. As far as the rotating slop in the oleo, if you you look at the picture with the red arrow you can see the space between the gears that drive the rotating part of the retract. Some shims from the other side to take up some of that lash should take care of that. It looks like it will be about .035" to shim out. Also, the shaft where the oleo attaches with set screws will need a flat.

I know that sierra retracts are much much nicer, but these look like they will work for me.

Never heard of "esm" retracts, nor the Corsair. Perhaps you could tell a little about sizes (Corsair wingspan and/ or scale), and give details about the retracts (mounting dimentions, strut length, etc.)?

Would be nice to have a web-link also.

$140 sounds pretty cheap for a set of air operated rotating retracts with 'oleos', so what are the "mixed reviews" saying?

CJ -ESM is the manufacture of KMP -they split , your seeing the same plane that sold for $469 now sell for $300 thru VQ ..
Same retracts that sold for $200 plus now sell for the $140 range .-go to VQ models , look at the new prices on ESM formally sold by KMP
100% same exact plane , my buddy in lancaster just bought one from Tomas .many post on the subject under troy build models or ESM corsair

jeff , let me know how the shims work out

LDM,

I measured up the shaft and the recess the shim has to fit into. Looks like this will be the ticket:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#94773a612/=41jqs3

They are .005 thick and are sold in a box of 50 for $11. You should probably measure your shaft to be sure though. The Chinese aren't exactly consistent.

mate of mine found that fitting a low compression spring in the cylinder helps the leg to snap in place, he cut the lettering out of the doors, to enable the air to get through, when deploying the legs, he slows up, no problem, never had a hang up since doing this mod

LDM,

I also came across mention of springs being added to the cylinders to help the gear come down, but to me there is not enough clearance inside to add a spring and still have the cylinder extend all the way out. Either I'm missing something or the person that added the springs had slightly different retracts? If you come up with any more info let me know.

Will do Martin , Thanks , I am going to seal all the seams with clear silicone , I have done this on my CJs , Robarts and sierra gear and have never had a leak !! Might as well try it with the ESM gear and add the shims !!!

I did the original spring modification in the Skyraider retracts, and I should have somewhere the spring details, if you are interested. However, the retracts in the pictures are a different version (Generation VI?), as I can see a conic gear that mine doesn't have. I suppose this gear starts to rotate as soon as it starts to deploy/retract. The problem with the old retracts is they deploy all the travel down with the disk wheel quite flat against the air flow and only rotate in the very last moment. May be you don't need the spring modification with this new retracts..

as I understand it, there is a version 1 and version 2 of the gen V retracts. I don't know the difference as I have never seen the first version. These do begin to rotate as soon as they start to deploy.

I may be greatly underestimating the forces involved with wind pressure against the gear doors, but when I tried my retracts they seemed to have a good deal of opening force. I guess we will have to wait and see....

Hi LDM!

I really like of buy it from VQ models, but i cant...
I need it be shipped people to people with low value marked, or I need pay 100% of taxes/dutys over retracts+shipping value (retracts $139,00+shipping $15,00 = Total $154,00+ $154,00 (100% dutys) = $308,00....
Its too high for me

Thank you

Doug

The retracts are fine. One important note....everywhere there is a set screw, take set screw out and put loctite. This needs to be done regardless of brand. The retracts work fine.

The retracts didn't work fine for my fellow club member. He had the same issue others reported. Retracts work fine on the ground, however did not lock down in the air after deployed for landing. After a minute of flying he was able to lock down after pulling up and stalling the aircraft several hundred feet up.

He purchased the Sierra's as backups and plans on installing.
