I’ve heard people say over and over that the .17 was hard to tune, it wouldn’t hold its tune and was unreliable. I have to take in consideration that the engine MAY be all the things listed in some areas (wherever one lies according to sea level, humidity, etc…..) but I personally haven’t had the first bit of problems. The only adjustment I ever have to make is when it turns cold and then when it turns hot outside. The used ST I bought has its own issues. The previous owner semi-burned up the engine and it’ll run, just not as it should. The one purchased new, I don’t even cut off to re-fuel. I just run it up to me, let it idle, fill ‘er back up and off I go again. I’ve had this thing do cartwheels, land right side up and take back off without a sputter. I ran it into a ditch and couldn’t find it but I could hear it idling. I goosed the gas once to see if I could see the smoke, I did, so I ran to it. It was upside down and just I got to it, if cut off. I picked it up, turned it over, wiped the glop of mud off the heat sink, slammed on the igniter, hit the tank primer a few times and gave the rope a yank. Then another, and another. The third one had it buzzing again. As a whole, I just have nothing to complain about really with the exception of the top differential housing to shock tower mounts (front and back). Eventually, without taking precautions first, you’ll break these off and send your dog bones careening through the air. I’d thought about going much bigger on the engine once but I know the rest of the drive train can only take so much. Since most of R/Cing consist of backyard fun, I’d rather go with something like a slightly more powerful O.S. .15 or sommat so I can bash without much worry of tearing up other stuff.
