We were wondering if the DuraTrax Overdrive ST RTR is worth the money. Also if there were any problems that occur with the 2-speed or other various parts.. Also wanted to know what top speeds were.

I have not had one but everyone I have known that has one complains about no after market support. Duratrax is good for beginners but after couple of months and trying to run with other friends that may have nitro trucks/buggies you will want something else.

Hope that helps.

My wife bought me one for Christmas. I have been bashing it around quite a bit. I like it but I think for my first I would get something a little bit simpler - not 4 wheel drive.
Dont listen to the people who bash them because mine runs well, is pretty fast and already has all the stuff that people upgrade to like the tuned pipe, reverse, oil shocks etc. - its all in there already. I would not try to race it but I was recently bashing at a campground with a guy with a new T-Maxx 2.5 and another with the RC10GT. The T-Maxx was faster, wore powerfull etc. than my Overdrive but the RC10GT wasnt. Its probably more durable though. We were just goofing around and the Overdrive was just as fun and the RC10GT ended up quitting.

Figure this would be better because it is 4 wheel drive - I thought about getting one of these because of design seem like it be a good jumper but got a buggy instead. I think my next will be a CEN MT2. I am going to sell both of my TMaxx 2.5's. One of them I only broke in and not driven since and I have had it for over 3.5 months now.

I'v owned my Overdrive ST for a year now and had no problems with it. Engine runs strong, parts are durable, quite fast, overall a great truck. I know that there are no aftermarket parts for the Overdrive ST but I find that great! I know it sounds weird but I have fun putting aftermarket parts for other trucks on my Overdrive ST....you could say its like "personalizing" my truck. This is a downside for begginers though cause they don't have the knowledge to know what parts will fit.

Joe, I thought my 2 speed wasn't kicking in but you have to warm it up. Do a couple high speed passes at full throttle for about 3 seconds and repeat this 2-3 times. After its warmed up it will switch for the rest of the day.

Ahm, dude. There are upgrades. Go down the list.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0005p?&I=DTXD92**&P=Z

I have two Overdrive ST’s. One of which I bought new, the other slightly used. I love ‘em both. There were/are are few design flaws (weak spots) but I’ve fixed those and have yet to have any “common” problems. On the used one the .17 engine is failing me (it wasn’t broke in correctly by the previous owner) so I’ll probably wind up replacing it with an O.S. .15 and rebuilding the .17 for a spare.

The truck rips.

Hey, thanks for the info. I knew there were those cause it tells you on the manual but i found some other ones on that site. So Billyman, how do you like the .17? I find it is actually very reliably and strong running. I am replacing mine though with an Epic .18 engine. I thought about a big block and it WILL fit but I don't think the stock tranny would handle it. I'm also doing a monster truck conversion for mine. Thanks again

I’ve heard people say over and over that the .17 was hard to tune, it wouldn’t hold its tune and was unreliable. I have to take in consideration that the engine MAY be all the things listed in some areas (wherever one lies according to sea level, humidity, etc…..) but I personally haven’t had the first bit of problems. The only adjustment I ever have to make is when it turns cold and then when it turns hot outside.

The used ST I bought has its own issues. The previous owner semi-burned up the engine and it’ll run, just not as it should. The one purchased new, I don’t even cut off to re-fuel. I just run it up to me, let it idle, fill ‘er back up and off I go again. I’ve had this thing do cartwheels, land right side up and take back off without a sputter.

I ran it into a ditch and couldn’t find it but I could hear it idling. I goosed the gas once to see if I could see the smoke, I did, so I ran to it. It was upside down and just I got to it, if cut off. I picked it up, turned it over, wiped the glop of mud off the heat sink, slammed on the igniter, hit the tank primer a few times and gave the rope a yank. Then another, and another. The third one had it buzzing again.

As a whole, I just have nothing to complain about really with the exception of the top differential housing to shock tower mounts (front and back). Eventually, without taking precautions first, you’ll break these off and send your dog bones careening through the air.

I’d thought about going much bigger on the engine once but I know the rest of the drive train can only take so much. Since most of R/Cing consist of backyard fun, I’d rather go with something like a slightly more powerful O.S. .15 or sommat so I can bash without much worry of tearing up other stuff.

I have flipped my Overdrive countless times and never broke any part. I also find it very stable in the air while doing 7ft jumps.

Do you also know what body, wheels and tires can fit on the Overdrive? I think I know some things that might fit but I want to check with you so I don't waste my money

I have a TMaxx 2.5 - They break constantly - Sport Maxx and EMaxx are same chassis. Rustler is fast and fun, some breakage issues as well. I do not have one, but knew someone who did. Was always replacing broken parts on it almost as fast I was replacing parts on a TMaxx all the time.

The electric rustler is very durable but cant compare to same as any nitro.

I never had an Overdrive, so cant help you much there.

Duratrax, Traxxes, Ofna, Tamiya, AE…………

You name it, regardless of what you have, someone will praise it and someone will slam it. That’s just the way it is.

I’ve never, ever, ever, ever, ever seen an off-road rc car, truck or buggy of any kind that didn’t break something, sometime. If it hasn’t broken, then it’s not being run hard enough.

For newbs to it all in the nitro world, since you’re learning from scratch, get something dependable and cheap (inexpensive). Do price comparisons and choose that way. Common problems with brands and models have common solutions so keep that in mind.

I’ll tell you this and it’s an opinion only; CEN racing has some of the best rc vehicles out there dollar for dollar. Some of which aren’t as good as others but those others may cost a little more. Some of which won’t even come close to CEN and cost a little more too.

If you have $500 to spend, spend only $300. Play, learn, get some experience and save more dough. By the time you’re ready to step up, you should be able to get that $500 car/truck.
