Ready to switch to something that will last more then a few months. The usual stuff out there, in the $20.00 to $25.00 range, just fall apart with frequent use. Looking at Radio South and RC CAT's. Any comment's appreciated.

I have both but use the RCCAT one more because the Radio South one will not hold a charge more than 2 hours

Hi Vince....Yup, I use the "RCats"....nice unit, BUT the weak/link with ALL (that I've seen) drivers is the plug/connector; not designed for HD use, (those of us that do a LOT of flying)....I did modify the out/put leads with in/line "Banana plugs" so I can then plug in a variety of connectors....FWIW

Hi George!...I notice you're in Swartz Creek...I'm in Millington....where do you fly? Are you getting better flying/weather than we do?

I guess the other question is which engine are you using? If you are using a YS DZ series then you will want one with the time delay built in. Or if you think you may at some point run a DZ.

Hi Ed, I fly at the Flying Aces RC field in Flint/Swartz Creek. Off of the top of my head, I'm not to sure how that relates to Milington though.
I have been out of Pattern for a while and have a couple of planes that needs some work done on them to get them flying.

It has been windy here, but not gusty so all in all it hasn't been to bad. Been 40-50 the past week or so but is supposed to be in the 50's before long, so may have to brave the wind and go fly!

Thanks Arch, Tande and all. Especially for the YS110s, latest model, I have the 115 on backorder, if it gets produced and when.
YS engine is the reason for this. My OS61SF's start just looking at them. Getting some problem's ironed out with my new YS110s, should be fine soon, need reliable glow power.

Radio South, only 2 hour's on a charge. Should that make any difference? Light the plug for 30 second's. That is one flight. Wouldn't that give you 120 start's, equate to 120 flght's ? Tande mentioned the clip. That is where the weakness is on any other's I have used. I will run remote's, should be best thing, or and auto unit, into the receiver.

Even on the 1.10, i would get the delay feature. It really makes all the YS engines start smoother. It makes all engines smoother to start actually. I would pay the extra and get the delay. It's only a few bucks more. I think the RCATS you have to send off to get the delay, whereas the Radio South driver you can order directly that way. RCATS might have changed this, but I'm not 100% sure. The 2 hours on the Radio south isnt a big deal, but the RCATS has a lithium which will last months at a time. However, it is a much bigger unit. The Radio South driver is small and compact. I really like dealing with Radio South, but the RCATS works too. ]

Be careful with remote glow units. I've seen more rounds lost because of those things on YS engines than probably any other single cause. The vibration and movement (especially with a good soft mount), really is hard on them. I finally gave up on them and just got the longer clip from Radio South and never had problems again. The glow driver i was using before I went to the CDI unit was the NCP or NHP from Japan that Derek K. brought over at one time. They arent available anymore.

I do love the CDI engines with not having to mess with those anymore.

Vince,

I hope you saw I edited that post and added the part about the remote glows. Be careful with them. If you decide to use one, make sure it is still easy for you to get and replace a glow plug if needed without having to dismantle the front of the plane.

Arch. Thanks for info. I can use anything for the SPA planes, I have the OS61SF's mounted upright. Now these Focus Sport's, YS inverted, plenty of room on the bottom for glow access. I will put the remote on, reason, reaching under after start, can do it fine, but just one more precaution. If not working that good, then attach direct. Need good contact, this is my first experience with YS. Has anyone modified the clip's to the plug, to get a better grip ?

I haven't seen too many remote glow clips come off. It tends to be the thin wire they use on the part that attaches to the plug. It will become weak over time with the rotational movement of the engine. You may be able to add a strain relief to this that would help, but its not going to fix it entirely. If you ever plug the driver in and you get nothing, be sure and check for a broken wire before you go chasing your tail. It might not even have to break totally for it to not work.

I had the Radio South and had to replace the batteries with less than 1 season use. Next season the IC booard fried. I should have looked at the warranty which I believe is 2 years but I just didn't want to hassle with it any more. I see the Radio South around alot but I like the RCATS much better. I did have to replace the end on it though. They use a Dubro end and I purchased a magnum which has far better qualityThey say you only need to charge it once a season. I have gone a month of flying and it still lit the plug no problem. I did purchase the boot which is a rubber cover that offers a little protection. ........ At the field a couple of weeks back I fired up as normal with my buddy John Slavic on the tail holding the plane. All was well and I unhooked the igniter from my OS160.
John picked up the tail alittle not realizing the RCATS was so close and hit it with the idleing 160. It hit hard enough to stall the motor and the RCATS flew 15' before hitting the ground. I thought oh@#$%%^& now I will need a new one. Not the case! the rubber case had a divit removed but was otherwise fine and has been working fine ever since. They do offer one with the delay. RCATS with a magnum end and go fly....
Just my opinion...

Cost is relative though. If you are running a DZ series engine without a CDI unit, then these are worth it. Not to mention a good one will last for years.

The RCats is the best unit on the market, you can now select the delay on it.
The DuBro Quick Clip is not good, I replaced mine with a Hobbico which I like better, anyway I installed an EC3 connector so I can replace the connector whenever I want, I really want it to be all the time and it is so cheap........

You can have run for several months without recharging, I have done that, and for the YS engines is the best in my opinion. Oh I forgot, the customer service is outstanding!!

Regards
