Truth is... many people consider becoming a Pro and all the "glory" it offers. In reality... that "glory" comes at a VERY high price.

A good while back I dreamed of becoming a Bass Pro. Then I entered a local bass tournament under poor conditions and spent 2 looong, grueling days trying to catch fish... I caught a couple throw-backs but no money fish.

It was then I realized that to be a Pro I'd have to fish 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year... just like that. I also realized how quickly my beloved fishing would become a hated job. Uh huh.. no thanks.

To really get sponsorships in RC... you have to be fairly good... not just average good, but pretty darn good. You do have to travel to the various events... Regional to start... Once you start winning a few events in a tri-state area... you can put together a video and send around to those companies whose products you consider to be top notch. With it you send listings of the winnings and top places you've made. You might also garner some reference letters from CD's and friends you've made along the way.

Build a website and start promoting the products you like NOW... put videos on it and events you'll attend.

Just keep in mind.. .you should be flying 5 days a week. The rest of the time you should be developing routines in your head. You should have a game plan on how you are going to pay for your big giant scale plane, motor, etc... then another plan on how to get your second after you bury your first.

If your game plan is to get sponsors to supply you next big plane... then you best have a backup plan.

I don't think there's been one person with developing skills that hasn't said "I might be able to compete and become a top TOC pilot. But VERY few have the determination, committment and savvy to actually pursue it. That's the first half... then you have to be better than MOST of the others who are already there and those that are on their way.

Don't get me wrong... I think you can do it if you want... but you sound young, and I'd like to give you an opportunity to look at it realistically so that your plan has the best chance of succeeding.

Good luck... I hope to see you in a "showdown" with Chip Hyde someday...

Funny thing about sponsorship, you still spend the same amount of money.....but end up with 5 times the stuff In reality all it does is reduce the amount of available space you had before you got sponsored

Taildragger,
You left out one important ingredient, you need to have a grasp on reality.

The reason I started "blowing smoke" in the first place is this thread is somewhat informative but the original request was ridiculous.

Maybe if someone adjusts their attitude they can learn from this experience and set some realistic goals for the future.

If you're just starting out, Try sticking to the local merchants in your area. Joe's Pizza might give you $20, the lacal gas station fuel for the plane. family owned business's around your home town might be more will to help you out, offer to display your plane in there storefront.

You guys are real gentlemen.

Edge540Kid...

they are pulling your leg...

There isn't such a thing as muffler bearings and we KNOW whose wearing "chips" on their shoulders. You can smell it from their posts.

I believe you are truly asking how to get sponsors... and there have been some good responses... just take your time and practice... and if you've got it in you... it may come.

Your remarks about "stuck up" vendors is a youthful mistake. The fact is that if they gave you a DA100 and your flying was lousy... and an excellent pilot flew a beat up old US Engines... it looks bad on the product. The whole reason they sponsor excellent pilots is to show their product in the best light.

They do it for positive advertising. If a guy rocks the house with his great flying plane... everyone wants to know whats in it... What motor, servos, receiver... how did he set it up... etc... If he's a mediocre pilot, they could care less what he's flying. Just the way it is I suppose.

Matt Steck is an up and coming pilot... he's only been flying like 3.5 years, but he's rocking the house. I'm not sure if he's gained national recognition yet, but he sure is well known in Ohio and surrounding states. Him and Frank Knoll put on an absolute awesome show. He's MAYBE 19 years old... He'll be getting quite a few sponsors (if he hasn't already)

I'd guess you're under 20...

Remember, there aren't any dumb questions... just a few thoughtless idiots who'd like to make people feel dumb.

At least I'm not calling people names. Thank goodness we have JDavid to protect the weak and innocent. I can have an opinion that is as valid as yours and just having a slick website does not make someone an expert.

You didn't have or state an opinion. You simply snubbed the kid for no real reason other than perhaps jealously of his drive. I suppose that gives you some form of pleasure.

Now if you HAD expressed an opinon, or even shared an original thought, you would have had my respect. Instead you earned my pity.

Go back to the Clubhouse Forum and spread your useless drivel there.

Glad you liked the website...

Guys, lets try to keep this thread on track, and maybe more of those that are sponsored can answer the questions.

FWIW, some sponsors do give out planes.

Not kidding man.... when I first got hooked up with ZN Line, I was like ok I want 2 Evolis XXL's.....I paid for them it was all good. Then they scored me an Enigma (for free!), then another for super cheap......so now I have 4, 2 meter pattern models on the wall.....what the hell do I do with 4 of them when I only have 3 140DZ's!!!!

See thats what I mean

Just to even things out and not make my planes jealous of each other, I am taking an Enigma and an Evolis to Poland hehe

Edge504Kid

My advice to you is to just go and fly, attend events, do well (you dont need to win just fly your best) and if you are sponsor material then it will just happen. If you look for it then you will likely be dissapointed.

PS: Make friend with guys who are sponsored, it makes a big difference if you come recommended by a team flier.
