New to our local clubs Q500 racing and need some advice.

1. My Q500 racer climbs at full throttle and I need down elevator to keep it level. Is it better to add some down thrust to the motor or elevator trim to keep it level at full trottle.

2.I didn't have plans for my Q500 so I balanced it 30 to 33% back from the leading edge. Is this best location for racing?

3. Any other advice on plane trim I should follow?

Use down trim or reset the stab or wing. Remember if you reset the wing it will add up thrust so the stab is better. Down thrust or up thrust for that matter will have very little effect when at speed. It does, however, affect take off. Down trim is better than up. (don’t know why but they seem to fly better with no trim or down trim)

To check CG trim for hands off level flight, flip inverted and see what happens. You are looking for a slight dive while hands off inverted. If it climbs its tail heavy. Also CG has a dramatic effect on pulling in (towards the pylons) while on knife edge. The further back the CG the less tendency to pull in.

Use dual rates. High for landing low for racing. Use only enough throw so you can pull full stick through both turns. Keep the Aileron very soft. I use full stick for roll up or out. About 1 full roll in length of course (long).

See Dub Jett’s web site for final trimming.

Most racers have the Engine/Wing/Tail incidence set at 0-0-0.

The first thing I would suggest is to check that your airplane is set up this way. If it is not then the fun starts. When building I establish the wing position first and set the other two to it. However in your case it is not that easy. the wing and engine are shimmable, I am guessing the tail is not.

If the glued in tail incidence does not match the wing then it will probably be easier to set the wing to the tail and then shim the engine.

I use three incidence meters for this purpose so I can check all three without moving the meter. I know this sounds like overkill but if you want a true airplane you have no choice.

Barry,

I'm not quite understanding your statement, could you explain a little more in detail?

Since I've been testing the SAM-RAI Quickie, all the CG's have been further back than normal. The planes (with different airfoil) fly best at 3 1/8" to 3 3/16" from the leading edge. Anything further than 3 1/4", the tail will do a power-slide in the corner, which seem like it's hard to turn in... Is that what you're talking about?

Sam,

I think Barry is referring to the fact that UP elevator trim is necessary to maintain level flight with a nose heavy airplane. When this airplane is turned on its side all the UP trim does is cause the plane to turn in towards the poles. IF the CG moves back the UP trim is removed and the plane should no longer drift into the poles.

3 1/8" back from the LE. Hmmmm, what type of airfoils are you playing with. Most tame airfoils only need to be in the 25% range and it seems as if you are in the 32% range. I am only asking because I have played around with the 66 series and noticed that I needed to be much further back than the 60 series which I was using before. I didn't think we were able to go beyond the 28% mark (rule of thumb, I think). Just digging for info.

On my current woodie using a 66-012 airfoil wing measuring 52" x 9.7" - I am flying with a CG at 3 1/8" (32%). It flies very well with very good stability, fast through the turn, great knife-edge/45 degree to/from #1 and no creeping in. Dosn't take too much elevator either! Best of all, IMHO, it is as fast as the $500 composites for less than $50 of materials.

Dan K,

It's a modified 66 series. The percentage has been moved back further than the usual 66-012. The best CG are as stated earlier, and anything less than 3 1/16", the plane tend to fly nose heavy. I'm still testing this airfoil and have found some good and some not so good (from fast to very fast and to very slow) and I will update it later.

Stay tune...
