I got my engine today the RCGF 20cc rear carb. It fits beautifully in the engine compartment. look forward to seeing your progress. I will bbe posting more pics soon as i have mad a lot of progress i am getting to the finising stage.

Im doing my best to get my table cleared off so I can get started on this.
Why is it there never seems to be enough hours in the day?????????

Just got the side carb engine for a Goldberg Ultimate.......Looks like a nice engine. I haven't said much here as I am just getting back into RC after a 3 year absence. Can't wait to get back into Warbirds.

I sure hope to have it done we will see how this weekend goes. I spent 3 hours carving the tail hook and creating the space for it in the tail. The little features are slow going but I am wrapping them up.

I think Chad has one of those Ultimates and it flies great. Let me know how your engine runs. From what I can't tell, people are very happy with the real ones from rc aero and his distributers

Warbirds are the best, and this one is a great way to get back in if you enjoy building.

Status: offline 		Time for an update. First of all, and least exciting, I have finished the sanding jig which will allow me to provide the rudder halves pre-shaped. This can be a lot of work if you have to do it by hand. From now on the kits will include these as seen below with about 99% of the sanding already done. If you have already got a kit and would like a set of the pre-shaped parts please let me know and I'll get them to you.

Status: offline 		Next up, I've finished the installation of the drop tank on my prototype and am just about ready to start making the kits to do this. This set up should be plenty sturdy to allow the airplane to be flown with the tank in place.

Here is the laser cut framework which installs into the top half of the tank. The wire at the front which represents the anti-sway braces is bent up from 2-56 threaded rod which will allow the installation of a nut to lock it in place.

A view of the top after the frame is installed showing the threaded rod at the front and the tab that protrude through at the rear which keys into the pylon.


Here is the pylon, also made up from laser cut parts as well.


Here I have installed the pylon and coated it with spot putty to fill the grain. I have also added small sticks of basswood to the front and rear of the anti-sway braces, shaped them to an airfoil cross section, and puttied them as well.


Here is a view of the plates installed in the foward part of the belly pan which accept the 2-56 rods and allow installation of a washer and nut.


At the rear, the two tabs which are built into the pylon straddle the keel of the belly pan and allow for the installation of a retaining nut and bolt.


The completed tank installed on the prototype. I still need to add the two mounting straps which are features of the full size Hellcat. They will be there for scale looks only and need not be functional.

Status: offline 		Finally I've started work on the flaps on Hellcat #2. This is the inboard starboard flap which is as far as I've gotten. At this point I have it hinged with a standard Dubro pin-hinge which works fine but I may go to a Robart style hinge per Tighe's flap installation in order to get a more scale-like flap deployment. I will show both methods on the plans assuming I can get both to work to my satisfaction.

Are you guys 'glassing your airframes? They look very good! I've never fiberglassed an airframe before, but I have 'glassed insides of cowls, tabbed in firewalls, etc. I may have missed it already, but was there a reference somewhere to a 'glassing for dummies' thread?

Chad, I am waiting patiently for payment for a couple of other projects, but I WILL eventually be ordering one of the kits soon.

Tommy,

Yes, both of our airplanes are fiberglassed. It certainly is not necessary to glass the Hellcat but it sure makes for a much nice finished product, IMHO. I will cover the glassing process step by step right here in this thread in the not too distant future and it will also be a part of the gallery on the Hellcat web site. Stay tuned...

I used a robart pin hinge for the forward hatch (not to be confused with a hinge point). Frankly, dont do it this way. it is much more difficult to get a nice gap with out hindered movement. The other doors use the sonic tronic hinge for gear doors. they swing up and out, much easier. As far as keeping the door closed I am using the 1/8 rare earth magnets. Chad got a ton of them off of ebay they come in various shapes and sizes. you can also get them at radio shack but you pay $3 for 2 vs. a quantity on ebay for simiar price. I think Chad paid pennies for them.

I made some serious progress this past weekend and this week. Chad and I have finished the design of the hatches a panels. They are cut from chrome trime sheets and applied to the model with frisket/ transfer tape. They can also be transfer with scotch tape though great care needs to be taken to avoid rubbing off rivets after the material has been weeded.
Now that it is all sorted out 2 sheets will be produced as a set for this aircraft. Unfortunatly, this detail is expensive to produce. The current estimated cost is $75 plus shipping. I will let you all know if this changes and a final price will be posted on the website. We are deciding the cost for those that want just the hatches without the rivet sheet.
*NOTE* there are a few pieces that have to be cut by hand. In my photos they are the tail fillet panel, the panel at the trailing edge of the horizatal stab and the panel just aft of the cockpit on the spine. All were hand cut then rivets were applied over them.

The jaged edge strips in the photo are for mimicking the pinking tape on the an 1/8 scale aircraft. They are approx. 1/8" width. lay them on, cut to length and lightly primer and sand.

I will show more finish photos as I work through it
