I have done the often but I think if you can purchase a ready made pack then it is probably the better way to go. You will get the cells already soldered, the cells in shrink wrap and the wire and connectors ready to use. A lot less hassle.

The only reason I have made packs is just for the novelty of it. I also chose the specific brand and types of cells I wanted to use.

If you do make your own pack make SURE you choose the cells with solder tabs and make sure there is no question the connections will not fail from poor solder joints or twisting the pack or twisting the exit wires and connector when installing and removing the pack from the plane. If you can mount them in plastic battery pack cases this should be done to limit possible problems.

Nonsense! Easy to solder your own packs. I save well over 50%
of cost. You need a 40 watt Weller soldering iron, electronics
solder. You can get all of this stuff at Radioshack. Check out
www.dynamoelectrics.com
There is a section there that shows you how to make your own
packs. 8 cell 1700 SCR's sell for close to $50. I can make them
for less than half the price.
You can also search www.rcgroups.com/forums for posts that
pertain to making packs. That website is primarily for E-flight.
More knowledgeable people on one screen (electric flight) than
hobby shops.

Pipe, excellent site!!!! Solder a couple of packs and your a pro!
No kiddin! A few tips....
1st....keep the solder tip on the iron well tinned (with solder) and
clean.
2nd...use solder paste...get it at ratshack...makes the solder flow
alot easier!
3rd....get a hammer head tip for your iron. Can be had at Hobby
Lobby or other hobby shops. Great for making flat packs
that fit in Zagi's and other wings and models.

Thats it!!! Soldering up a couple of 8 cell KAN 1050 packs for speed 400 ships. Lesseeeee.....2 packs, 16 cells for $32, add
$1.50 per pack for connector and wire and shrink wrap. Thats about $17 a pack. Where are you gonna get a price like that for
this kind of high grade pack? Hobby shops will get ya for $30 or more.

Why not buy a four battery AA holder at radio shack? Buy the 1800 MAh batteries at home depot. Wrap around twice with electrical tape and Wallah you have 1800 MAh batteries for $11.00.

Dear Fellow RCU'ers:

The PIPE Here again-and at http://www.tnrtechnical.com/nicad_nimh.html I just checked TNR Technical's CURRENT price on Sanyo 1650 mAh capacity "OEM" style NiMH cells (the sort with the "plain pine green" colored plastic labeling)-and they're only $2.00 per cell nowadays???

I've got TWO airborne packs made from these cells for my needs for the present-once some MONEY gets free of "mid year" obligations I may very well get me a dozen of these for future needs...my SuperNovas and I can handle 'em just fine!

Yours Sincerely,

The PIPE!

I suggest you visit www.rcbatteryclinic and from the discussions menu read about "solderring to cells". Most of the do it yourself sites emphasize the "too much heat/time" problem but its good to know what actually happens if things go wrong. Shorted packs are not much fun either and "cold" joints should be well understood too. Good luck.
