Whoa....What is this? Stripping insulation? Why?

Is this another rumor???

Fill me in, please.

I have come across some people (non tech types) believe that the last 1/2 inch or so of the antenna should have the insulation stripped off for best reception !!!!!!!!!!

Anyway back to trimming my antenna.

Cool. I've been tired of the myriad of urban myths at my field - for example "you shouldn't have a mobile phone near a computer transmitter because it could wipe the memories"

For revenge, I've been looking for an urban myth of my own to start spreading - the last 1/2" idea is a great one.

Needless to say, there is no truth to that particular theory.

You guys crack me up! Cut the last half-inch of insulation off the antenna for better reception! LOL

You know, to add a little Credibility, try fanning-out the strands of that last 1/2". Tell them it's a capacity hat for MUCH better range! LOL

You know these myths catch on. Like the knot thing, the fellow earlier said he had heard it, and read it, in the '60's! Somebody probably lost range and their plane and when they found the remains there was a knot in the antenna.

....And the story begins....

I had a guy tell me that I should paint my ham radio antenna black to make it radiate better. He had the right idea, only he was off by 5 or 10 orders of magnitude in frequency.

If you run the antenna through a pushrod tube inside the fuse, use the clear type so the radio waves can see the antenna better. It's TRUE, I SWEAR it!!!

Crash_N-Burn,
To an earlier question of mine about looping and coiling you mentioned that the range might suffer, but only a small amount. You mentioned it might change from .5 (point 5) to .4 (point 4) miles. Is that all the range our controllers have? What is the practical range for a controller and receiver to safely operate? PS... love the humor showing up here.

Theoretically stated, it’s line of sight. If you can see, you can control it. My guess for practical outer limits of having control would be perhaps one 1 to 1-1/2 mile maximum with the plane flying away from you. If it were flying straight up above, you could probably double the range. I used the .4 and .5 miles as an example.

I think we generally fly within ¼ mile (or less) of our control position and the receiver is in complete saturation (lotsa signal) almost all the time.

We do meteor-burst antenna tests at a slightly lower frequency but with ½ watt at ½ mile and the receiver is solid as a rock, so I cannot see why .75 watt at 72MHz would be any different, even with a unity gain (zero gain) receive and transmit antenna.

Perhaps if they used clear insulation on the receive antennas instead of black the range would increase, yes? LOL
