Hey everyone,

I'm researching a Twin Otter project and am having great difficulty finding any information about the floats. Size, style, company all that kind of stuff.

Can anybody out in RCU land help?

Good project.

I imagine that the best place to start digging is the Otter website: http://www.dhc3otter.connectfree.co.uk/

I'm not sure what floats the Twotter used, but the Beaver usually used EDO floats.

Sea Commander

http://www.seacommander.com/

sells quality scale EDO floats.

Come out to the High Country Big Bird this weekend and talk to Ted Russell, he should be able to help you.

There is a company in Houston, TX specializing in Twin Otter floats with a web site. Search on Twin Otter and you'll find the floats. In ScaleAero there are several T-Otter images in a walkaround in Photo Focus. It is not on floats but will provide up close and personal details.

Lakeflyer:

Was up at the Big Bird today but didn't see Ted Russell.

Bill, Ed:

Looks like I found a company that's called Wipaire that makes them. I've Emailed them (and about a hundred others) but haven't heard back yet.

The best luck I've had on the floats so far is my father remembered he had a 1/72 scale matchbox kit that has both floats and skis. So I guess I'll just have to use that.

Thanks for your help everyone.

The company here in Houston has a neat web site with graphics. I thought they were fitting large EDO's to the T-Otter.

Here's the one I found: http://www.wipaire.com/stc_list1.htm then scroll down to #41.

What place is this in Texas you're referring to? I found a couple of parts suppliers in Texas but no float stuff.

I searched for the Clear Lake / Kema, Texas DH6 float builder but had no success. I originally had them in ScaleAero.com's Doc-U-Link but alas...yes friends.. They couldn't keep their head above the tidal pull of the economic vortex...

But, here's where I'd say you'll find answers to your questions as this guy appears to have the repository of float knowledge with respect to "scale floats".

Good luck in your search...

I was hoping to make it to big bird but didn't. I have been told that Ted usually goes to that one. Ted has build several Twin Otters over the years or various sizes. I think they were based on a plan in Model Builder or Model Aviation. Check out www.mraerodesign.com he will be coming out with plans next year, he might be able to help you. I looked in several of my books but couldn't find any specific float info. You could try asking for help on RC Canada under Scale Documentation.

Well I've given up on the floats for now. I got a hold of Martin Rousseau (Mr. Aerodesign) and he doesn't have any info on them either.

Now here comes the hard part how do I get these flaps and flaperons to function properly.

Anyone have any ideas?

As for details and closeups of everything on the DH6 I've got over 200 images in a walkaround covering it from nose to tail. Robart has fowler flap tracks for sale but you've got to see these up close to understand they hang out there all the time.

You don't need the fowler flap track because De Haviland only use pivot for her flap and flaperon. Look the animation for the Buffalo flap and flaperon on my website and you will understand how it work. Very simple and easy to make in R/C. The Otter, Twin Otter, Buffalo and Caribou use the same kind of flap. The Buffalo also use spoiler, coupled with aileron. Very nice and effective system !!

I saw your animation from the buffalo but the hinges just look different to me.

I'll search some more on your site Ed. Last time I was there all I found was a small section with 3 pictures from pretty far away.

Thanks again for your help guys.

If you can get close to Ted Russell's Otter (on the cover of the latest MAAC mag) it has ture-to-scale flap and aileron hinges......

I was at HIgh Country this weekend....if I'd know you were going to be there.................................................

It's the Buffalo flaperon geometry.
